so practicing carrying a flag for drill team practice is really a good way to desensitize your horse and work on your leg and seat commands as well. Now it is important to pursue your groundwork and make sure your horse is okay with the flag for desensitization. Check out these videos
although I have carried a flag with Luna before, it is always good to come back and do a refresher as part of your tune up process.

How long is the pole when done training? Is it DYI or store bought? Is looks like the stirrup holders with 2 straps would be more secure, thoughts?

I usually like a Pole that is a little taller than myself. DIY for training purposes. I just Zip Tie a cheeper flag to train with. I like a light 6foot pole. I never use straps or a pole holder during the training process, That way you can always let go of the pole if the horse spooks in the beginning. I would train like this for at least a month before an event. Pole holders on your stirrups are kind of a pain, I only use during an event.

Very nice video! I have an 8yr old OTTB mare who is very worried about those flags. I am on drill team, and next season we will be loping with flags. The first time she saw riders riding with flags, all the muscles in her whole body trembled and she wouldn’t focus on me. She got better, to the point where she won’t be utterly, mind-blankingly terrified, but she’s having a lot of trouble with it touching her on the ground. I think the English ppl taught her to listen to the flag and take cues from it, bc when I try to move it toward her hip or girth she moves as if to lunge. Do you have any advice to make the process a little easier for her and maybe quicker for me? Thanks ❤

Lots of practice every day and I highly recommend hanging a flag near the stall.

@LoneStarWoman Equestrian 🤩 thanks for the prompt reply! I will check out these videos, and since I don’t have stalls, maybe I’ll put a flag near her food bucket. 🇱🇷❤️ thanks again for helping me out, I will now sub! 👍🏼👍🏼
