The sphere on our national flag is the armillary sphere. It was first introduced by John VI of Portugal (João VI of Portugal). This sphere was to represent the Union with Brazil. When Napoleon invaded Portugal, Portuguese royal family moved to Brazil and made Rio de janeiro as it's capital. The sphere itself was firstly introduced by the Templars and Henry the navigator did too. This symbol is used to represent the Age of Discoveries, which was one of Portugal's golden age.

Back in the 70s, when I was stationed with the US Air Force in Germany, I was on vacation in Spain, and thought of taking a short jaunt over to Portugal, but I was tired, it had been a long trip, so I decided to go back to base instead. On THAT day, Portugal had the coup that overthrew Salazar.

The Spanish city of Ceuta also has that coat of arms, because it was part of Portugal (in fact, it was the first place that Portugal conquered outside the Iberian Peninsula), but in 1640, when Spain and Portugal splat up again, it remained with Spain, and has been part of it ever since.

Some additional corrections which I also posted to the main video: • 4:03 - it's "Bom Jesus do Monte", not "Com Jesus do Monte" (as a Bracarense, that one really stood out). • 10:35 - it's "mirandês" or "mirandés". "Mirandese" is the English name of the language so it should have been pronounced as an English word (i.e. the same way as "Portuguese") • 13:05 - the Associação Académica de Coimbra was founded, obviously, in Coimbra - not in Porto! Also, as a fan of espresso, Paul - how come you didn't mention it in the episode? We Portuguese take our coffee pretty seriously, as I'm sure you had the chance to taste yourself when you visited ;)

Eventually we will make them learn: Slovenian uses postalveolar consonants, which makes anyone not used to them confused. For example the "sh" sound is written as "š", "ch" sound as "č" and so forth. "Gašper" in this instance is pronounced as "GA-SH-PER". Could use more examples, but at that point we are training you not to bite your tongues while speaking West Balkan stuff.

the word arigato does not originate from Portuguese. But glass in Japanese is a Portuguese word. we say "vidro", Japanese says something similar like "vitro" and also the word cake in Portuguese is "bolo" which is very similar to the Japanese word for cake. We were also the first to arrive japan and founded the city of Nagasaki. We are the oldest and truest nation-state. And yes with have a friendly rivalry with Spain, however our biggest enemies during the empire days were the dutch which stole a lot of our colonies during the Iberian union. This is one of the reasons why we fought the independence against Spain. We only lost our independence once during our existence, for 60 years, to the Iberian union. You guys at geography now actually did a good job explaining some stuff. But again nothing is better than to visit the country and enjoy your time with the locals if you really want to know more. @@FaithfulOfBrigantia Duh, I know that. That's one of the meaning people attribute to it, it's not "the true" (one and only) meaning. The most commonly referenced one is that it represents the battles against the Moors. Even if it's origins in the Portuguese flag are indeed Spanish, it still represents the battles against the Moors as well (the Reconquista was in the whole peninsula). Your comment doesn't make any sense. That's like saying we can't claim the Portuguese cross as our own, because it has origins in the Asturian cross. That's nonsense and it reveals ignorance of the historical events. Where are you from? Please tell me you're not Portuguese!
@FaithfulOfBrigantia
@FaithfulOfBrigantia 4 жыл бұрын
@@lauramartins5953 Thing is, Portugal does descend from Asturias, the Portuguese county was founded by an Asturian noble as a part of Asturias. So it makes sense to have a reference to the Asturian cross. But having the flag of your greatest rival in history, after fighting so many wars to maintain sovereignity while they slowly took over the rest of Iberia... Seems a bit insulting to the pride don't you think? Sure you can shift the meaning to something more palatable, but the original intended will always be there.

Just wanted to add a information about the blue shields inside the white shield . Basically it can also represent the Miracle of Ourique (wich is connected to the 5 muslim kings) . The miracle of ourique is a history made by the people of that time saying that the angle of portugal appeared in front of Afonso Henriques (1st king of Portugal) before the Battle of Ourique has a messenger saying that if he hears the bell of the closest chapel to go away from the camp where Portuguese troops where and when he did that he saw jesus in the cross saying that he would watch after him and his peers and that he would win the battle of ourique against the moors . And after that "happened" the next day Afonso Henriques won the battle and killed the 5 muslim kings and became the 1st King of Portugal .

*History curiosity:* Portugal was one of the countries that resisted Napoleonic innovations. Napoleon launched a continental blockade order, where no european country could negotiate with the United Kingdom, in order to make it weaker and so Napoleon could invade UK way easier. But Portugal refuse that order because of both countries being so strong allies. So Napoleon got mad and tried to invade and occupy Portugal three times, and he failed all of them, which led him to give up Portugal and go attack Russia, which also refuse that order. (something that also went horribly wrong).

There is no real dispute over the origin of 'arigatou', we have writings from centuries before Europeans came to Japan which use the word.

Hi, sometimes is portugal we say arigatu as a way to say thanks in a cultural manner. Maybe it was all the way around, Japan taught us to politely say thankyou. In conclusion, I have the theory that the people who received the discovery guys had a lot to teach them and vice versa. The most interesting part is the ability of diferent people coming together and exchange ideas. There is more that unites us than seperates us. 😊

Paul, Portuguese people don't think arigatou came from obrigado. It doesn't. It's not disputed. Do you really think Japanese didn't have a word for thank you before the 16th century? Arigatou and other conjugations of the word appear in medieval Japanese writing, as far back as the Heian era of the 1100s. Please fix your spread of misinformation. This is not a tiny mistake.

@@diogopereira1475 you think Portugal brought their word for thank you to Japan in the 1100s? Diogo, no one is claiming there are not words in Japanese that come from Portuguese, and you're even missing the most well known of them in your list. But "thank you" is absolutely, inarguably not one of them. Research it for two minutes.
