I’m thai and I’ve heard when I was a kid that they change the flag because that when the flag blows, sometime the elephant will blow upside down, which is considered really bad mythology wise, so they change it to a pattern that’s the same style no matter the orientation. Still would love the cool elephant though :)

An explanation for the Iceland-Ireland flag (1:07): The diagonal crosses represent Ireland. It's off St. Patrick's Cross, which is what represented Ireland, now Northern Ireland in the Union Jack.

As a south american i have another very good example of an older flag that used to look way better: compare the actual flag of ecuador, that looks very similar to the flags of colombia and venezuela, to the flag they had in the 1820-1822 period. fun fact: that older flag is now the flag of the city of guayaquil.

6:43 the flag is for the entier county that is called Podgorica. All other places execpt Bar(I think) have one collord background and a coau of arms on it(Kotor has tow color in the background).

iirc, the middle stripe of the Thai flag was changed to dark blue was so that Thailand (or Siam back then) would have the same flag color theme as the Entente during WWI. Also yes the elephant flag got changed because one was seen hanging upside down. (Or so the story goes)

Ukraine is actually referred to as "the" Ukraine in some languages and cultures. And was in American culture for a while in the news. I believe it's because it literally means "the borderlands".

“The Ukraine” is a region, Ukraine is a country within that region. If you say “The Ukraine” to refer to the country you are wrong regardless of culture or language. It’s archaic speak from a time when Ukraine wasn’t a country, and the only way to refer to that area of commonly disputed land was by its regional designation, which was The Ukraine, which means homeland of the Cossacks. When the country was founded it adopted the name of Ukraine as the region name had become synonymous with the area around Kyiv.

11:28 that South African flag is technically illegal, if the South African flag is hoisted vertically the colours (red and blue) must be swap so that in vertical the blue colour is on the right side, if there is a horizontal South African flag that doesn't match this it's wrong, and technically in breach of the flag rules.

The Israeli flag does not need to be rotated to work as a cape as it is all ready loosely based on a prayer shall, the tallit and the stripes are horizontal when worn.
