Flail mower operation cost? We get asked this a lot. "Does it cost more to operate a flail mower?" Over the last year, this question has been asked almost weekly. Many people answer the question having never operated a flail mower, much less, owned one. We dive off into a kind of review and service of our flail mower where we dig down into true cost.

Right now I have the Titan Attachments 78" wide ditch/bank flail mower. The cut quality is akin to a residential lawn mower! Yet it cuts biers and weeds 5 to 6 feet high leaving nothing but mulch behind it. Pine tree saplings just disappear! I love this thing, now I want to get a full 7 foot wide one though (78" is 6 1/2 feet for reference). I have chipped slightly 2 of the hammer flails and resharpened them with a grinder they still cut just fine after 2 full seasons of mowing... adjusted my belt tension once, and grease it every day or two when I'm using it with red lithium grease. Mine has the swinging guard plates on the front they suck and some have gotten knocked off and lost unfortunately... chains would be so much better! Also it has a rubber flap over the back of the roller which shredded pretty easily I think some conveyor belt rubber would be much better!

I think the flail mower is a great investment Tony. I have been trying to convince my younger brother. He has a 40 HP tractor and mows about 5 acres of hillside with a 6' brush hog. He's borrowed my 5' finishing mower a few times but says it ain't big enough. So he's wanting to upgrade a 6' finish mower. I'm sure a 6' Flail mower would be a lot lighter and easier to maneuver than a brush hog.

I liked the video and the info. It got me looking to see what it would cost to replace my blades on my 72" rotary mower and from Messicks, the blades are $54.24 a piece. Expensive, but not as high as you had listed in the video which is a good thing. (Part#820-199c for Land Pride rotary mowers)
@TonysTractorAdventure
@TonysTractorAdventure 2 жыл бұрын
The price ranges a great deal. I priced Bush Hog name brand replacements at one of my local dealers. The heavy duty name brand blades for a 72" were almost $200. That blew me away. He said, they are having a hard time getting replacements.

Not near as expensive to replace my JD MX5 rotary cutter blades as you claim. Also got to consider there is only 2. What 40-50 of them on a flail mower. I just keep my bush hog greased and sharpen blades once in a while. Not much maintenance at all.

Superb piece of kit, looks like it should give great service when it's so thoroughly maintained. Shame there isn't a float function on the tilt remote, though I'm sure one could be engineered.
@TonysTractorAdventure
@TonysTractorAdventure 2 жыл бұрын
This is a sort of float. The top link has a long slot to move back and forth on. It give the unit a good bit of flex. Having the hydraulic top link really makes it easy to zero in.
@boomerau
@boomerau 2 жыл бұрын
@@TonysTractorAdventure so everyone has a different opinion on where the float position should be on the top link - front, middle, back. can you do a video on that setting with the skid and roller height as well.

This unit is set up of offset mowing. Other than the slot on top, there is little adjustment. It is a compromise with it being offset.

Great vid! But i have to add my 2 cents here My time running commercial flails (light and heavy hammers) hammers flew off like mortars from both striking unseen objects and the pivot bolts wearing thru. Easy and quick to fix, if you or others don't wind up getting struck by the failed parts. Always practice safety folks!

I have never had one come out. Newer flail mowers are not as open as the older ones. I guess there is good and bad in that.

If pivot bolts were wearing thru and breaking then they weren't made of the right metal.... they should NOT do that! When running they don't move that much either.

"technically" you are supposed to replace balanced pairs - from the shot it looks like other than the 2 really damaged ones you picked worn ones not pairs. They are great after storms as you don't have to pick up the branches, leaves, sticks, etc - just mulch the lot and cheaper than blades on the rideon.
@TonysTractorAdventure
@TonysTractorAdventure 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think balanced pair exists on this machine. They are all offset from each other, so nothing is directly opposite. I think they should be close, but I am not concerned with a slight difference.

We had one of these, a bigger one, at the NC city that I worked for. Great for clearing brush, small limbs and such. We would use it to clear the side of roadways so cars could safely travel on them. Does this require a certain size tractor to mount on? Would say a TYM 125 be big enough? I have banks with briers on them. Lots of briers and plenty of 1-3 inch saplings to get rid of.

Hi Tony... I need to get into my Woodmaxx 62" tomorrow to replace some hammers that took on some heavy duty rocks toward the end of last year. I saw the discussion below about balance. Have you ever replaced a broken blade with a new one adjacent to others that are significantly worn but still functional and created a balance issue? I know the one time I busted a hammer clean off (1/3 of the hammer and busted the bolt) I was almost shook out of my seat with a full hammer missing... but I put the same one back on with a new bolt since it's all I had and she still ran pretty smooth. Any experiences you can share regarding an imbalance situation? Thanks.
