PARTS OF FLAME ARRESTOR
It is relatively simple equipment which contains no moving part, does not require a power supply and does not require an operator to observe it; Typically a flame arrester comprises a housing, an element and connection(s) to secure it to pipe work or equipment. it just requires maintenance over certain time periods.
WHY TO USE FLAME ARRESTER
Flame arresters are used :
 to stop the spread of an open fire
 to limit the spread of an explosive event that has occurred
 to protect potentially explosive mixtures from igniting
 to confine fire within an enclosed, controlled, or regulated location
 to stop the propagation of a flame traveling at sub-sonic velocities
WHERE A FLAME ARRESTER SHOULD BE USED?
Wherever flammable liquids are stored or flammable gases/vapours transported, a flame arrester should be used to ensure that in the event of those materials igniting, damage to plant is minimised and threats to life are eliminated
They are commonly used on :
 fuel storage tank vents
 fuel gas pipelines
 safety storage cabinets for paint, aerosol cans, and other flammable mixtures
 the exhaust system of internal combustion engines
 the air intake of marine inboard engines
 Davy lamps in coal mining
 Over proof rum and other flammable liquors.
FUNCTION OF FLAME ARRESTOR
A flame arrester works by absorbing the heat from a flame front traveling at subsonic velocities, thus dropping the burning gas/air mixture below its auto-ignition temperature; consequently, the flame cannot survive. The heat is absorbed through channels (passages) designed into an element.
TYPES OF F FLAME ARRESTER
There are 3 type of flame arrestors which are In-line flame arrester, End-of-line flame arrester, Combination fame arrestor.
In-line flame arrester is fitted with two pipe connections one on each side of the flame arrester element and used for underground storage tanks and in continuous process lines
End-of-line flame arrester is fitted with one pipe connection only. Used for above ground storage tanks
Combination fame arrestor with breather valve is a tank protection device ,which safeguards tank/vessel from over pressurization or fire this is a combination of pressure vacuum relief valve with in built flame arrestor
