Flamecraft (1-5 players by Cardboard Alchemy and Lucky Duck Games) was one of the more popular games at Essen Spiel 2022. It was also one of the most attractive games, as many people were buying the additional metal coins, miniatures, and wooden tokens. This is a game that can draw in family members of any age, although it does require reading. If you would like to play with very young kids, you can easily play open-handed to help them understand what the cards do.

I'm curious about your theme rating being so low at 2. To me the theme is the main appeal of the game.

So, according to the terms I use (and I recognize not everyone would use the same definition) the game’s appeal is it’s COMPONENTS (artwork, mainly) The components definitely support the theme, but the gameplay doesn’t really have much to do with dragons. Praying the game, I am mostly just focused on getting resources and trading those resources for points. I only give a high theme score when the theme is integrated into the gameplay in a meaningful way.

@@theperfectboardgame thanks for adding some context. I think we have also just had different experiences with this game, or perhaps different expectations of what theme integrated into gameplay looks like. I do get the feeling of a thriving friendly town full of diverse artisans, dragons and otherwise, manning little shops. I think the theme is so much a part of the gameplay that it supports the main criticism I've seen of the game, which is that it's too generous/abundant, there's very little tension and negative player interaction. And while I prefer games that have more conflict, where the tension is higher, etc. I also think that this type of extremely friendly gameplay fits the theme perfectly.

The game does have a low skill floor, like Splendor, but I don’t know why you’d say it doesn’t have a lot of strategy cause the ceiling seems really high. There’s an incredible amount of player interaction, half the dragon abilities will directly effect the next player. Whereas you take a game like Scythe, even though you have way more options than Flame-craft, the strategy is way more dull because player interaction is so costly. Looking forward to this one. I won't list specific sites or add a link here (not sure what the rules / your preferences are around that) but the limited run Deluxe version of this is still available online for its normal price $79 with free shipping. Don't feel the Deluxe version is really needed for this game, but I've noticed the absolute first thing my 7 and 4 year olds do when I open a game box (new or old) is gravitate towards the character pieces, and then get excited about who they are going to be. Because of that, having those dragon minis from the Deluxe edition is going to be a must for us.

This game is designed for cute pieces and artwork.

This is the Kickstarter-variant, right? Because otherwise the components are cardboard and not wood, or did I get that wrong?

Correct. There was a disclaimer at the bottom of the video, but it is easily missed because it is covered by the user engagement interface.

This is the deluxe version. It said in the video, but the text is too low on the screen and if you watch on mobile, the icons block it.

I ordered the deluxe components. There was a disclaimer at the bottom of the video, but in a shorts feed, it gets a bit covered by KZfaq’s interface, so you may have missed it.

@@theperfectboardgame you said don't expect strategy, I said don't expect plastic dragon minis, they don't come with the game, they're an extra expense, just saying, I ordered through Amazon and it was pictured with them but they come with wooden dragon meeples, which is fine, but it's misleading to not inform people the minis are extra

You mean the minis were shown in the Amazon picture or in my 60-second video? I hope my video isn’t misleading. I just checked and when you watch the video on a mobile device, the channel and interaction icons obscure my “deluxe components” notification. I tried to be clear but I didn’t realize it would be blocked. So sorry if I mislead you but thank you for letting me know!!

@@theperfectboardgame it doesn't matter to me, I own the game and bought the minis as well after I got the game and realized the minis were extra, I actually like the wooden dragon meeples, I just think of kids that may be disappointed if their parents aren't made aware

Normally I like this channel’s reviews but this was a terrible review of an awesome game! First, this is NOT a “set collection” game! I don’t know where he got that from! This is a worker placement and resource management game primarily. In addition, the big draw to this game is the idea of communal engine building! This is NOT a cooperative game yet the actions everyone takes works together to help build up the engines of each individual shop, making that location better for everyone. Secondly, the theme is fantastic and well implemented! It is actually one of my favorite parts of the game! The humorous names for the shops and dragons are just brilliant! For the theme the game takes on, I don’t know how else you would portray such a theme. Thirdly, while I would say that this is a family friendly game, I think the strategy level depends on who you are playing with. I have played the game with my wife and kids and the strategy was light. I played with some of my gaming friends, and the strategy got quite heavy for what the game offers! There are actually a lot of options to consider on the one hand. But then, because everyone’s actions affect the game for everyone, it’s easy for you to come up with one plan, then have the next player suddenly introduce an element of the game that provides opportunity for a third player to take advantage of and then interfere with what you may have had planned. Overall, I think this review does not give this game nearly as much credit as it deserves. I’m not saying it is the most amazing game in the world, but it is definitely much better than the review lets on.

I found out about it when I was looking up games that would be at Essen. I identified it as one to seek out because my wife loves dragons and games with great components.

@@fuzzmaster4157 I would call the gameplay "cute". This is my disclaimer: There is nothing about the gameplay that will blow your mind. Speaking as someone who has played hundreds of games, I think this is pretty conventional. However, if I let myself stop thinking critically about it and simply ask: "As a dad, do I enjoy playing this with my family?" The answer is: "Yes. I absolutely enjoy playing this game and I will keep it forever."

Don't expect heavy strategy? Uh, speak for yourself. When I played this, my friends and I were neck-deep in analysis paralysis.

I guess it's more of "you don't have to go into deep strategies to play decently, but there are lots of hidden nuances" I mean there are paying other players(yay politics), and ramped costs based on supply-demand(like Hallertau but minus its rule complexity), so I suspect the game has some hidden depth
