I love how he's looking at his hands like he's curious about what their doing yet he's the one doing it lol
This video seems from his later years. Years of practicing myopia and such problems, concentrating on on the correctness, rather than showmanship, which can mask errors! I've heard his recordings with some really delicate passages. He needed to be heard besides the vocals and stomping sounds of the dancing!

Metal strings are different from nylon strings its a different technique. He uses two fingers its wrong to play with your thumb or with a plectrum with flamenco. With metal on the electric guitar they most of the time use a plectrum and the side of their hands for special effects. Also tapping is something thats used allot in metal in flamenco you never use tapping on the fretboard. Flamenco has allot of beautiful tonality of how the strings are touched and metal is more rythmic like a drum solo its more on hitting the right unique notes in the right pattern so they are completely different from each other. A metal guitarist cant play flamenco and same other way the other way around. It takes years to reach the level this guy plays at. Its one of the most difficult acoustic guitar styles not only hitting the strings right and like metal staying in the beat you also need to very difficult chords most of the time. So you could always experiment but flamenco is more about class and less about jazz so most of the time guitar players that train this train it every day for multiple hours its like classical music it has the same prestige. Its the most essential and most difficult part in a flamenco group to master. So the comment of novak is very accurate metal is very modern and flamenco is more of all times and both are very complex.

I’ve been playing for about 15 years but made a resolution to learn classical guitar this year. Let me tell you it has been humbling. The guitar is a beautiful yet unforgiving instrument that tears you up while you learn it. But I’ve come to realize that all of the things I see people do is within my realm of possibility. It’s just do I have decades to spend on a single piece or technique? You have to really love this instrument to get as good as these people.

The great Sabicas toured with the best flamenco dancer ever (Carmen Amaya) when he was in his teens. All flamenco players revered and deemed him THE pinnacle of the genre. I played for 50 years and was grateful to experience his genius many times. He was so talented that he took his creation across the oceans and produced the best guitar arrangements of Latin American music with his "compadre" Mario Escudero. He left our world decades ago now but beautiful to hear and listen and appreciate.

When I was a boy I came across an album in a music store called, The Art of the Guitar by Sabicas. I had no idea what I was listening to. I didn't know there was such a thing as flaminco guitar. All I knew was that this music took my breath away. 40 years later I still have that album. I haven't listened to it in a while. I don't know if this track is on that album as there was no information listed. Not even song titles. But whe I listened to this I instantly recognized the playing. Beautiful.

In 1975 or so, I was a broadcaster and was assigned to meet Sabicas at the airport, with my friend who spoke Spanish to provide translation, and accompany him to his hotel. I was very surprised that an artist of his international status would be traveling alone, but he was. He invited us into his suite and we were treated to about a half hour of his practicing. I regret that I knew absolutely nothing about flamenco guitar then, and still don't. But I can sure appreciate the hard work and talent that goes into performing this music. Sabicas told us that he practices at LEAST 6 hours EVERY DAY. He said he couldn't play like he does if he didn't practice this much. Astounding dedication. A sidenote: He was living temporarily in New York and came from the "old school" society of Europe. He showed us his "security blanket" - a DIAMOND the size of a nickle, on a stickpin which he kept behind the lapel of his jacket. He said if he ever got robbed they could take his wallet, but they'd never find the diamond which was worth a fortune. Quite a man. RIP, Sabicas.

Whenever a performer/celebrity came to the small city in which I was working as a broadcaster I would often be assigned to meet with him or her to do an interview. Since Sabicas's English was not great, I asked a Spanish-speaking friend of mine to accompany me to assist with translation, etc. That's why we three spent that time together.
@garygullikson6349 Жыл бұрын
Sabicas was one of those who helped popularize concert flamenco guitar music as an art form itself, separated from traditional accompaniment of flamenco dancers and singers. A number of famous flamenco guitarists learned from Sabicas including Paco Pena and Paco De Lucia, Juan Serrano, and many others. I was privileged to listen to Sabicas play at the old El Poche restaurant in the early 1960's accompanied by Mario Escudero. Sabicas passed away in the 1980's. I have loved flamenco guitar since the 60's along with many other styles of guitar.

In 1963, I started listening to flamenco guitar music. I loved it immediately. I asked a friend of mine - who had studied flamenco guitar in Spain - who he would recommend to me to start collecting LP's. He said "Sabicas is the best...start out with his music." That was great advice, and I have considered Sabicas the best among flamenco artists ever since (although Paco de Lucia - God rest his magnificent soul - is a very close second).
