It seemed that the cultural forces and changes which have been occurring for the past several years were at work but were not imminent and pounding at the gates of my "city". Now however, in the last 15 month it feels as though they are tearing down and apart many of the things which I hold dear, right at my own front door. We must become classical historians to realize what we need to fight to keep and what we can and should let go of in our cultural standards.

"My students at the seminary, who could be around 24, are nostalgic for the 1950s." I wonder who he could be talking about.

I think this "memory" can easily be taught without dipping SO MUCH into the Greeks and Romans. I'd much prefer to study the Church Fathers than the pagan Romans and Pagan Greeks (because all the Greeks and Romans he quotes believed in the gods). And the goddess talk about "Muses" and their Mother is weird. We don't care about what Greek Pagans did. I'd much prefer the OT Patriarchal Fathers and Levitical Law and Levitical Law being spoken of than Greek or Roman Law. I just don't get the obsession with Greek and Roman Pagans amongst "Traditional Christians."

I enjoy reading them to understand the basis of Western civilization. It gives context to the secular philosophy and art that we encounter every day, as well as understanding the context of Christian European art, which includes literature. Also, just because they are pagan does not mean their works are without beauty.

@@ZigmasOfSamogitia me too. If we don’t understand how the Christian mindset developed BECAUSE of what it was surrounded by, we will never fully understand it.

It's called plundering the Egyptians. Take the pagans' good ideas and make them better.
