Winner of the first-ever Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film, FLANNERY is the lyrical, intimate exploration of the life and work of author Flannery O’Connor, whose distinctive Southern Gothic style influenced a generation of artists and activists. With her family home at Andalusia (the Georgia farm where she grew up and later wrote her best known work) as a backdrop, a picture of the woman behind her sharply aware, starkly redemptive style comes into focus.
Including conversations with those who knew her and those inspired by her (Mary Karr, Tommy Lee Jones, Lucinda Williams, Hilton Als and more), FLANNERY employs never-before-seen archival footage, newly discovered personal letters and her own published words (read by Mary Steenburgen) alongside original animations and music to explore the life and legacy of an American literary icon.

Makes sense. Conan referenced one of her stories in the Simpson's when he was a writer for the show.

I am so very pleased to learn of this. I am an avid fan. Ethan and Maya Hawke created a biopic about my dear Flannery this past year titled, Wildcat. I tried and failed to write a compelling biopic about her because I found it to be impossible, but they cracked the code, so to speak. Watch a discussion they had with Bishop Robert Baron on his KZfaq channel, Word On Fire. It is downright uplifting. I am presently writing a "Novel / Play that is dripping with Flannery's sensibility.

And to make her life even more surreal, she lived only a short distance from Milledgeville, where our Georgia State Mental Institution is! Flannery made no distinction in her writing about black or white : Georgians know Flannery's characters at close range: we grew up with them and, as Julia Sugarbaker quipped, "We prop them on our front porches!" I'm a fan. Flannery would make Erskine Caldwell blush! And one of my fave blogs, "The Bitter Southerner", relates that the peacocks are still well, thriving and very territorial 😊

Just watched the movie - the story, the pace, the editing, the music, the effects of suddenly encountering a still picture for just a second or two. It was amazing!

I've been wanting to see her TV appearance at CBS for more than ten years now - amazing that they finally unearthed it! And Conan is in the movie, too! So excited for this movie! Hope it'll be available in Germany eventually.

I really enjoyed this doc. Found it on PBS Docs/Amz Prime. Makes me want to read one of bee books but which one? No one her in Southern Ca to discuss Carholic writers with.

Flannery O'Connor--in my opinion, the greatest American writer of the second half of the 20th Century. She is so far superior to the much-lauded William Faulkner; especially in so much as she possesses a sense of humor. Her oeuvre of the Southern Gothic is beyond compare. As far as Faulkner is concerned, I think even Eudora Welty is a better writer.
