Using a Flash in the Sun seems like a silly idea, but, a strong sun creates shadows, and your trusty flash is the perfect way to fill those shadows in. You may feel goofy pulling out your flash on a bright sunny day, but your picture will be looking great!

So, were you using high speed sync with that high shutter speed? Great output from that 200 Watt in HSS.

It's noticeable that the flash gives a colder light than the ambient. This is fine if that's what you want, but a straw or 1/4 CTO gel on the flash would balance both light sources. Easy to achieve with a small flash head like this (looks like a Godox AD200).

Great pics, although I think maybe you should have explained that you can’t just shoot away as most cameras will default to flash sync speed which will obviously not work.

I’ve been doing this with film for a long time, and my camera’s sync speed is 1/60 and below.

Didn't like the pictures. And as Paul mentioned the temperature of the flash is cooler than the ambient. Should be balanced or at least have a warmer temperature on her face.

You could do it without flash, only a correction of the shadows in Camera RAW. The flash often kills the bloomy mood.

He needs a warm gel (1/4, 1/2 CTO) on his flash. That would help. Also, if he were to use less flash it may look a bit more natural. I don’t think exposing for the sun without any fill and counting on shadow correction in post would give nearly as good of a result.

Why not use the sun behind you? Is that just to avoid shaddows?

if you were a photographer worth your salt you would know the answer to that question next time you have a really bright sunny day get someone to stand facing the sun then take a photograph of them that should answer your question hahah

@@michaelreynolds6543 And if you were worth your salt you'd be more helpful instead of blurting out a narrow view. Not everyone shoots strictly backlit in sunny situations. If you want to be critical, let's hear your critique of this over-compensating clown of a photographer, SRL.

@@thetwistedmedic6350 Washed out over-exposed? No. If the sun is to your back, everything in frame will be the same exposure. Yes, your subject may be squinting; but, you can have them turn their head, shoot at an angle or use the umbrella to shade (or find shade) There are many options, backlit is just one option.

If you're an advanced shooter then this guy will seem ridiculous to you. Master of Light? Enough with these unqualified titles. Everything about this person is overcompensating and a fervent huckster.
