The way Morpheus unapologetically states the way things really are in this scene, without sympathy or any restraint, unfolding all of this horror, that in my opinion is what make this scene so memorable.

The funny thing is that with AI tech on the rise, is that Morpheus's line "We marveled at our own magnificence as we gave birth to AI" fits humans today since so many people are using AI for so many things like writing papers, doing art, and even voice generation.

I always found the loading construct intro so cool. You expect to hear echoes, footsteps or ambient sounds other than their voices, but there is nothing. Even Morpheus sunglasses have no reflection at first because it hasn’t rendered yet. Only when Neo interacts with the chair or when the tv turns on you hear sound effects.

The more this ages, the more realistic it becomes

I think it's safe to say just about anyone would react this way upon the realisation that the world they thought they knew has actually been turned into a hell hole. Neo's reaction is a perfect blend of not just disbelief but also shock, panic, anger and horror.

2 decades later and still kicks ass, probably schools in 2099 will include this movie in history/art lessons.

His reaction after he got unplugged seemed pretty on point. If someone were to genuinely experience that, I imagine they'd pass out from pure shock.

This is a philosophical masterpiece. Questioning reality to this uncomfortable yet fascinating degree. What is real? How much am I in control and when am I the one being controlled? We watched this movie a couple of times in philosophy class and the discussion we had in class were some of the best lessons I had in school.

When I was about 13 watching this my mind was blown at the concept. We are marvelling at the birth of AI as we speak, seeing what it can do, how far it can go.

This is one of the best sequences in the history of Science Fiction movies. The only change I wished they would have made was the line "combined with a form of fusion". Beautifully done. Having experienced a similar horrifying shocking reality myself, Neo's mental breakdown was right on point.

I remember seeing this as a kid and never understood what this all meant. I was into the action and chaos. Understanding this for the first time in 20 YEARS IS MIND-BLOWING!

The look on Neo's face at 3:57 when he finally realized what the Matrix is ....just superb acting by Keanu Reeves... you can feel his panic at the sudden realization that his whole life is a lie...

Really nice audio mixing in this scene. The dead, but resonant sound of the construct. The imposing SFX of the desert of the real, with the added reverb. As Morpheus delves further and further into his explanation, his voice seems to gain heaviness, and so does everything else.

The Matrix, Terminator 2, Shawshank, Super Metroid, American History X, Doom, Quake, Die Hard, Goldeneye, Half Life, Zelda, Chrono Trigger, The Mask, Forrest Gump, the list goes on and on. The 90's were freakin' wild. And truly glorious. It wouldn't be half as glorious without the 80's though, and it's a shame I wasn't old enough to fully experience these two decades.

This is the best scene in cinema history to me. Not so much for technical aspects, but because we have an invitation in pop culture, to really ask ourselves if the things that we accept as reality really are so...

I remember my brother and his gf taking me to see this when I was 12... it blew my mind and still does. I had so many questions after the movie and all the answers kept blowing my mind as well. They don't make movies like this anymore.

Laurence Fishburne has done an excellent job playing Morpheus, he deserves an Oscar

I can’t believe, It’s nearly 2024 and this movie nearly perfectly describes the correct world we live in.

What's also interesting is the reason they named the character Morpheus. In Greek mythology Morpheus is the god of sleep and dreams and he would appear to mortals in their dreams and be a messenger of the gods and communicate divine messages to sleeping mortals. So in a way Morpheus is telling Neo he's been living in a "dream" world and is in fact asleep in the real world and everything in this "dream" is not real.

The art direction and imagination of this movie is GOD-LIKE!!!

I love this scene but it always pains me to know the studio dumbed it down: my understanding is that the original script had the machines using humans for processing power, not batteries. But the studio thought the average movie goer wouldn't understand. Still, incredible scene.

matrix 99 was a stylistic master piece, great visuals, atmosphere, action and special fx and of course the music. After watching matrix 4, I sat on a bench outside the theater like sad keanu for a few mins, overwhelmed by disappointment.

It's funny how everybody is genuinely concerned about Neo's mental breakdown, except for Cypher, who is just "he's gonna pop ( •-•)"

This film is even better today than it was on release. I absolutely love films that age like fine wine.

Having an actor who has a voice that is so beautiful, well spoken and deep as Lawrence's, really helps sell the whole scene. Lawrence has the kind of voice suitable to narrate anything, even a nature documentary, and make it sound beautiful and interesting. His cool appearance, his cold factual delivery of such well written lines is a powerful combo. Because the lines it gets to deliver are incredible: "What is real? How do you define real? If you are talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, taste and see then real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain." That was the kind of thing that blew audience minds back in 1999. The kind of thing that makes you raise a hand and go: "Now wait hang on a sec..... [thinks about this]..... Oh shit >_> ... O_O whoaa.. " To top that off, the excellent mixed emotions acting of Neo as he listens to everything explained to him, and the incredible visuals of the scene as everything is explained. Like the absolute stark white room they start off in, moving through the TV, the visions of the real world, a human as a battery, etc. This scene is cinema history. One of the finest moments of movie making.

The Church bell toll at 4:12 is the “cherry on top” of this masterpiece. It denotes the doom and finality of just how existentially crushing this really is…

jesus christ this movie is perfect, the fact they made a revolutionary blockbuster action movie AND a philosophical masterpiece at the same time is one of the coolest things ever to me... its so good that im not gonna watch the sequels cause ik they wont live up to this

The scary part about this is we don't even know if its already happened to us in Real Life right now.. and the Movie could have been made by The Matrix itself to let some of us aware of the situation.. to set some of us Free.

“What is real? How do you define real?” What a brilliant and mind boggling question, It’s Morpheus’ monologue that makes this scene so good and especially emphasis the horror of what the world has become and Neo’s reaction sells it. Even to this day, after nearly 30 years you still can’t really answer it. Every time I rewatch this masterpiece of a film I pick out something new that I missed.

I love how supportive the team is with neos reaction. They’ve all been there. How could you not have a straight up panic attack after leaning the truth is that horrifying.

4:25 i had the exact same feeling when i went to college, outside of the public school system. theres some things you wish you never learned you realize you might, just to actually survive. its an odd realization but once you pair it with a few history classes and texts on futurism, you kinda go bonkers for a few hours.

This movie is still awesome to watch today. Shows how far ahead of time the film was.

Morpheus was a tad dramatic for introducing such a PTSD inducing reality. No wonder Neo had a nervous break down.

This scene deserved an Oscar, better than all the sequels this movie received. I believe that if, instead of wearing out the universe of Matrix with desperate sequels, Warner could have made a film with just Morpheu (as the protagonist) in search of the Chosen One with his team. We could see how he was rescued, who mentored him, how he recruited Cypher, Tank, Trinity, Mouse, Apoc, Switch, Dozer. How was his meeting with the Oracle and how this character evolved until he reached the level of knowledge where we know him. In the end he would be a few days away from finding the Chosen One.

It's one of the most iconic scenes in the whole movie world. I can watch it everyday.

having seen all of the Matrix movies (including Resurrections, unfortunately) and the John Wick movies, "Always Be My Maybe", "Constantine" and not even including the tons of other movies Reeves has been in, I think he really is a great actor.

Looking at what is going on today, the movie was prophetic, as hell.
