Contagion (2011)
Scene: Bet gets infected in Hong Kong
Playlist: is.gd/blzlga
Storyline: Soon after her return from a business trip to Hong Kong, Beth Emhoff dies from what is a flu or some other type of infection. Her young son dies later the same day. Her husband Mitch however seems immune. Thus begins the spread of a deadly infection. For doctors and administrators at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, several days pass before anyone realizes the extent or gravity of this new infection. They must first identify the type of virus in question and then find a means of combating it, a process that will likely take several months. As the contagion spreads to millions of people worldwide, societal order begins to break down as people panic.
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Writer: Scott Z. Burns
Cast: Gwyneth Paltrow (Beth Emhoff), Matt Damon (Mitch Emhoff), Laurence Fishburne (Dr. Ellis Cheever), John Hawkes (Roger), Jude Law (Alan Krumwiede), Marion Cotillard (Dr. Leonora Orantes), Kate Winslet (Dr. Erin Mears), Bryan Cranston (RADM Lyle Haggerty)

A bit late to the convo. I think it is our hind brain. The image of a shark gnawing off your limbs is so macabre and immediate. Sure cancer is hell, but it is protracted. Our "fight or flight" part of the brain gets effectively more triggered with sensationalism. The movie Jaws, with its visceral imagery and outlandish sound effects , does a good job at imparting a sense of urgency.

In democracies, governors are chosen by the people. You and your compatriots have impact on who is there and maybe who has better chances to survive. As for doctors, it is their job. Similarly to soldiers in wars. Everyone has their role, responsibility and risks. It is never going to be equal in every situation. But this works.

the woman concerned about “the biggest shopping weekend of the year” is the physical embodiment of America’s handling of the virus, and why the situation is so bad and still getting worse at this present moment
@MasonStrand
@MasonStrand 4 жыл бұрын
I disagree, in the movie, this was before they knew anything about the virus. She wanted to know if it was overblown hype or not at that time, and the medical professionals told her "we don't know anything about the virus. All we have is advice. You can't agree with everything we say, but neither can you disagree either that we have a crisis to solve." She sounds rude and ignorant, but her concern over economic problems that could result and what to say to the public is exactly what goes on behind the scenes. This is basically a documentary about big countries trying to handle pandemics. It was a warning at the time that we didn't listen to. Luckily, COVID19 is not as bad as the virus in the movie.

One thing I do wish they talked about were the survivors, since they mention early on that while it’s deadly, it’s still possible to get it and survive. A reason schools and businesses like to keep mum who started an outbreak is because of the backlash. How much backlash would result if you had MEV-1, didn’t know you had it and survived?

What's most interesting about that is the way the characters in China are like "you can't say for CERTAIN that it started in China" even though they pretty much had it nailed. If China (or anyone) would just stop worrying about their ego, we would have been on this all much sooner.
@tylerskiss
@tylerskiss 4 жыл бұрын
@Kayla Pounds Or... it's far more likely we aren't getting a realistic death toll seeing as China has been dishonest from the start. In fact, the most realistic scene in the film was when the Chinese officials were trying to "persuade" Marion Cotillard's character to suggest the virus did not originate in China. If China had acted quickly and been so successful there'd be no reason to silence the press and make doctors "disappear".

@Chris No one. It probably won't mutate to a completely different disease vector, but it could get exponentially worse. Seeing as it is treated with antibiotics, many humans who eat meat risk having antibiotic resistance, which usually means the virus gets to spend more time in a host and that gives it time to mutate. I love how in shows, they make the "Imminent wrong choice or opinion" that was never obvious at the time portrayed by a jarring and rude person, while the "right choice or opinion" is portrayed by a composed and intelligent person. The problem is that both of those opinions are equally valid as neither has the information to make a full decision, so it's guesswork at that point, but in television and films, they always make the wrong choice portrayed by a dick to softball the audience into making the protagonist and the problem clear. It's a clever device.

The MEV-1 pandemic was a global pandemic caused by the hybrid Meningo-encephalitis virus 1. The novel virus was identified in Minneapolis, USA imported from a casino in China before spreading to other areas of America in 2011. The WHO declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) and assessed the outbreak had become a pandemic the same year. The pandemic caused 2.6 million deaths worldwide, making it the twelfth deadliest pandemic or epidemic in history.
