"It is exhilarating to be here with you in this room today. In some ways it seems like we have been together here most of my life. I came here first as a freshman young single adult (YSA). I served a mission with YSA missionaries, then served in the military with YSA-aged soldiers. Then I came back to BYU as a twenty-four-year-old sophomore after a six-year summer vacation of mission and military to serve again with young single adults. I have served in presidencies of seven elders quorums of mostly YSAs, in a YSA bishopric, as a high councilor over a YSA ward, then a bishop of that ward, and in a YSA stake presidency. And then my wife and I were off to be mission leaders with a bunch of YSA missionaries. I came home again and served in a YSA bishopric. I was then called as an Area Seventy, and, of course, my assignment was to serve all of the YSA stakes here in Utah Valley.
It seems I am suffering from a state of arrested development. It is interesting to me that through all of those years and assignments, you BYU students have never changed. I don’t know what you see when you look at me, but I look at you and see contemporaries. It has been a great life, growing up in rooms like this with astonishing people just like you.
To Walk by Faith
Let’s talk about faith. Faith and belief are complicated things. My most recent work with the Children and Youth program has made me especially attuned to youth whose gospel moorings sometimes fray. And it is not only young people but many among us who find ourselves sometimes unsure of the doctrines or of the narrative. We cannot judge each other for what we do and do not know. Belief and testimony come only through gifts of the Spirit, and the gifts of the Spirit are, after all, gifts. They are highly individualized and measuredly dispensed by a Heavenly Father who knows our hearts and needs and administers to them with divine precision.
Heavenly Father purposefully designed and ordered our world to require us to walk in faith. He pressed into place the pieces of this sophisticated jigsaw puzzle of mortality but held back a few of the pieces, which He keeps in His pocket to ensure that faith is required as we come up against the gaps in this puzzle’s spiritual landscape. He has ensured that we will not be able to game the system by thinking our way to heaven-to discover Him through provable math or science, which would obviate faith and foreclose the purposes of mortality.
I have a struggling attorney friend who recently said of the gospel, “It just doesn’t add up.” Well, his is a fair observation, isn’t it? The puzzle is incomplete, so it does not always add up. This should not surprise us. Even in mathematics there are numbers-such as pi-that are irrational but reliably constant.
I once spoke at the Law School across the street about these themes, and I am borrowing from that talk today with permission. There is a principle of law called the doctrine of chances that applies by analogy to our mortal walk of faith here in life. The doctrine of chances is an exception to a rule of evidence. Normally, evidence of a person’s prior crimes or acts cannot later be considered in deciding a person’s guilt. Just because someone committed one crime doesn’t necessarily mean he committed another. But the doctrine of chances essentially asks, “What are the chances that a highly unlikely combination of such facts is mere coincidence?”
The doctrine of chances arose in a 1915 trial when a husband, Mr. Smith, was accused of drowning his wife in a bath. Smith claimed she had fainted and drowned. Normally, under the rules of evidence, a prosecutor could not have introduced evidence of Smith’s prior acts. But the judge was asked essentially, “What are the chances that it was just an innocent coincidence that Smith’s two prior wives had also drowned in bathtubs?” Suddenly Smith’s case went down the drain. He was summarily hanged.
When multiple overlapping sets of data form a pattern that decidedly points toward a certain conclusion, and no other explanations seem to make sense, the truthfulness of the conclusion must be considered."

Great talk! I'm greatful that God doesn't micromanage us, by showing most of us, "parting of the red sea like miracles," in order to convince us that he lives. God knows that true faith can only be cultivated through being in a world filled with doubts, and choosing to act on faith, despite not being able to see everything right now. God loves us so much, that he sent Christ to die for us, that if we exercise faith in him, we can live with him and loved ones forever!

Being a member for over 15 years and having watched hundreds (if not over 1000) talks and speeches, not counting those I’ve seen/heard in-person firsthand, this is one of the top. Up there with His Grace is Sufficient by Brad Wilcox in my book. This talk was so masterfully and beautifully done. I couldn’t help but feel the inspiration of the Holy Ghost and of God Himself as I listened today. This talk has blessed my life. Thank you Brother Lund. Most of all thank God!

40 uncertain decisions that he made. Those words are hard to fathom and hard to put into place in real life for yourself. The difficulty of enacting uncertain decisions sometimes is the most fearsome and questionable things that you can do. But apparently the blessings manifested themselves later on.

I love President Lund. He was the Mission President in Georgia when I got baptized in 2003. Since then, my wife and I have maintained a close friendship with him and his sweet wife. I can testify to all of you that they both are absolutely a man and woman of God and salt-of-the-earth type of Saints. I invite you all to look up his General Conference talks as well.

Wonderful perspective! I like your question 'What are the chances?' This can be asked of many of my own personal experiences, but also of so many experiences and events throughout history, including the restoration of the state of Israel and the return of the scattered tribes to the promised land, the similarities between Israel and the restored church, the Book of Mormon and linguistic similarities, temples, etc. What are the chances? 100% chance of divine flashes of light. 😉

P.S. 35:20 reminds me of President Nelson's prophecy that "Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again. We will see miraculous indications that God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, preside over this Church in majesty and glory."

I hear what you are saying. I think it was a knee jerk reaction, a natural man reaction, as it seems the question took him off.guard. He wanted to dismiss it and almost felt offended and called it inappropriate on so many levels. Maybe the tone was argumentative or challenging. I, like you, have a hope that it was sincere, almost childlike or without guile, even if it might have been a rough delivery. Sounds like Bro Lund yielded to the Spirit in that moment, despite his first reaction, to answer more earnestly and honestly in a way that acknowledged the question and this man, sincere or insincere, but didn’t force him to reveal any sacred experiences that would be inappropriate to answer. Brother Lund changed his response because of the Spirit and maybe this man felt known by God in a way that was very personal for him. And maybe the moment helped clarify the power of the experience for Brother Lund by having the opportunity to reflect on it and share it. God’s working on all of us all the time.

6:05 He called the guy Korihor? Really? Mocking him for coveralls? Why is it inappropriate to ask people their experiences with God? This talk downplays knowing Christ in power. The Lord does *not* ask us to walk in darkness. He commands us to turn to the light and become the light. Isaiah 50:11 talks about those who walk in "sparks" of light. They shall lie down in sorrow. This talk basically says that sparks are all we should expect, and near the end of the talk says that sparks in sacrament meeting are more powerful than the experiences of Moses, Paul, etc. REALLY? I'm working on knowing God in power. I'm not satisfied with flashes and sparks. Sorry--not buying this. The scriptures testify that God will give us more--even the first and second comforters. Cases in point: Lehi - 1 Ne 1. PILLAR OF FIRE. Not sparks. 1 Ne 11: Nephi - vision of the son of God. Jacob - saw Christ personally. Enos - spoke with God. People of King Benjamin - mass baptism of fire and the Holy Ghost. Alma Sr, Alma Jr, Helaman, etc. etc. Massive power, massive light. Actual knowledge of God. Does the Book of Mormon or Bible ask us to walk in darkness, with only flashes of light?

You should message him to express what you feel. I’m sure we can see more than flashes of light if we really work towards that and partner powerfully with God, but many are just trying to see some meaning and purpose through their lives…I think that is more of where Elder Lund was coming from. But I’m sure if you asked him he would be happy to get your perspective…
