Thanks for sharing this. I was using the SCAL 5 hack, but it cuts way too fast for how floppy these machines are. It was literally cutting dashed lines on the Y axis (or is that z on a vinyl cutter). I'm looking forward to proper speed control. FYI, disassembly is not required. All the pins are accessible through the cartridge port. Get a proto board with edge connections and some basic soldering skills and you're golden. Pin 1-6 on the ribbon cable are the front left edge connections. The first connection is pin 1. It's even reversible (back right pin is also pin 1). I'm going to try this on my junky expression that I already have torn apart. If it works well, I'll do it to my nice one. Yes, I have a goodwill computer store addiction problem that resulted in my ownership of 3 cricuts.

@@ellisgl No. I was going to make one to use with an Arduino as the programmer, but I couldn't get atmel studio to talk to the Arduino. I bought an avr programmer that had an adapter that would plug into the cricut's board, so I just went that route. I now a 2 expressions from goodwill running the custom firmware. Also, I got them to work with SCAL 5. I don't really like that software so I just use inkscape, but some people may want to go that route.

@@ellisgl I did try to do that, but I'm completely lost with atmel studio. If I remember correctly, I couldn't figure out how to get the hex file. Sometimes it's hard to find out how to do simple things in technical software that just assumes you know what's going on. I'm familiar with Arduino IDE, but I'm kind of spoiled with things just working within the arduino (and even ESP) ecosystem. and they make their instructions simple enough that my kid's could follow along.

For pressure and speed: Pressure: press Xtra1, then press the +/- arrows, then press load/unload paper. Speed: press Xtra2, then press the +/- arrows, then press load/unload paper. Great video! Managed to do this using an Arduino instead of a dedicated ISP device. Thanks!

I press Xtra1 and then + and bunch of times and still the pressure is not deep enough to cut. My cutter setting is also at 6. Any suggestions?

I bought one of these the other day hoping that I could use it to cut out stickers that I printed on my regular inkjet printer. Would this be a good use case for freexpression? I'd like to try it out. I have a usb/asp that I bought for putting a bootloader on my 3d printer and a ch341a and I bought for flashing bios chips. Could I use either of those?

Not easily. You would have to bypass the USB interface and wire up an ESP to the UART. Probably would not be reliable.

I have been messing around with the firmware in MC/AT studio for a bit. I'm quite certain there is something wrong with the clock speed after flashing. The display is PAINFULLY slow in refreshing. the author abandoned the project a while ago after commenting out the display refreshes which is why you can't see the speed and pressure change. I am unable to as of yet isolate the problem with the selector wheels or the display. QUESTION: Do the fuse bits change on reloading the HEX? Is it possible the xtal is selected from the software after the fact? thanks

Hi Marie, I have never used design space, but it is possible that the program attempted to upgrade your firmware and failed. It's not common, but it does happen. There might be a way to force the Cricut into recovery mode by holding down some button on powerful, but only the manufacturer can help with this.

Are the steppers connectors flipped? This can cause the motors to turn backward.

Unfortunately no. This formware is only for the Expression. Depending on what "disabled" means, you might be able to buy another broken Maker, and swap out the bad component. See if there are any hackerspaces near you. Someone there might have the skills to assist.

@@johncabrer2328 Disabled remotely by Cricut to avoid return shipping costs. The Cricut Maker is new and considering the price I find it a shame not to be able to find a solution to use it. Unfortunately I don't know anyone here who could help me as the brand is recent in France. I think it must be possible to reactivate it remotely but I don't know who would be able to succeed

That type of disable permanently burns fuses in the chip and is not reversible. The microcontroller would need to be swapped out.

Only the cart that comes with your machine in the box is a placebo. The fonts for that one are stored in flash.
