Flashlight destroys $14M F-35 engine at Luke Air Force Base

A flashlight left behind during maintenance work is responsible for damaging the engine of a $14 million F-35 at Luke Air Force Base, officials said.
According to a report from the Air Force Aircraft Investigation Board, the incident happened on March 15 last year.
The jet was undergoing some maintenance work and a three-member team failed to complete a tool kit inventory. When the jet's engine was restarted, the flashlight was ingested, causing damage "beyond repair."
"The Board President found by a preponderance of evidence that a handheld flashlight caused the damage to the aircraft," the report said.
No one was hurt during the incident.

A couple of mistakes in the reporting here, the jet is 75 million and not 14 million, the cost to repair the engine is 14 million, and it will probably get repaired and put back in another jet.

Actually, the estimated damage was 4 million and the cost to repair was less than that. Mainstream media can’t get their facts right.

Believe or not but I think this F35 is beset with plenty of problems, cost overrun, software problems etc. Only these are the known but what abt those unknowns??

Your car engine will be ruined if you put a flashlight in it and try to run it. It will also not work. Your lawnmower engine wil be ruined too. An F-4's engines will be ruined by doing this. An A-10's engines will be ruined by doing this. An F-15's engines will be ruined by doing this. A SU-35's engines will be ruined by doing this. An F-22's engines will be ruined by doing this. A Eurofighter's engines will be ruined by doing this. A Su-57's engine will be ruined by doing this. A Cessna 172's engine will be ruined by doing this. There is no engine that will not be ruined. Use your brain. This is why people despise mainstream media.

its true, put some moldy sugar out of the rot storage and shove it in the intake of any engine, i think its enough to make even a marine engine with a piston the size of a oil barrel to start burning oil permanently until fixed, the glue like sugar is going to ruin the piston rings, maybe a 2 stroke can handle it idk.

@@biancag8617 That's part of the thing. Headlines that don't need to be ambiguous at all are written with ambiguity. To the point it is sometimes indiscernible what they were themselves even trying to imply for certain or implying anything at all. That they include the price of the engine suggests, given the enormous decades long misunderstandings of the F-35 by the media and general public, that it perhaps makes the F-35 engine is extremely expensive compared to other fighter engines and also sucks. But you may be right, I am myself simply assuming it was intentionally intended to imply these things. It would not surprise me.
