SYNOPSIS:
Justinian of all the emperors of the Eastern Roman Empire came the closest to achieving the Renovatio Imperii - the 'renewal' or restoration of the empire. However, as astute as the Great Emperor was at bringing his enemies to heed his rule, he was unable to defeat the greatest of enemies - which wasn't even human. Yersinia Pestis - the bacteria responsible for the Bubonic Plague would - would bring the empire and all in its path to its knees and bring about its own Renovatio Bacterii.

What is abnormal becomes normal quickly to humans. One of my favorite pictures of the London Blitz shows a woman brewing tea on the ruined remains of her house in London after it was destroyed by German bombs.

ancient ppl mindset totally different. i once read Maurice Druon's arcursed kings explain that those days ppl die so easy and so young (around 30); 1/4 woman die in giving birth so they not too emotion like today

That's because today we have become, the West at least, accustomed to an almost unnatural level of material comfort. Most of us have an excess of possessions that 99.9% of people that time literally coukd not imagine. And as such it has made many of us mentally, emotionally and physically weak

My father did that Heritage thing some years back and the stuff that he figured out and obtained from it was actually kind of crazy. A very long, ancestral story short, he found out his forefather was a landowner in England before he had been given a land grant from King George II. My dad ended up finding an archived journal from him that started from his trip over to the Americas, and was used until his death. It has tons of amazing details. Like how the wood tax to the king was impractical. (The land grant stipulated that for every 3 trees he fell, 1 must be fell for the realm. Or something along those lines.) He ended up marrying an Indian woman because his wife died on the voyage across, and it details all of that. Its just amazing, and rich with tons of cool history, not just of my family on my dads side. My mother also did it and revealed yet another rich story that goes back to Ireland to before the potato famine. Not as far, but still revealed direct ties to Devil Anse of the Hatfield family. Which I thought was kind of neat.

The plague claimed the life of a few Welsh kings "The great death [plague] in which Maelgwn, king of Gwynedd died. ‡Thus they say 'The long sleep of Maelgwn in the court of Rhos'. Then was the yellow plague", The Annales Cambriae (Annals of Wales) Scary stuff.

Rome wasn't fully restored not because of treachery, enemy armies or economic failures, but because of a plague. Justinian did his best, but him restoring the empire was not meant to be.

underrated plague like those of the 18th and 19th century . this one especially feels to me more brutal than the 14th century one maybe by the number of gruesome descriptions and the fact it was recorded to have infected regions in deep in africa like the congo and kenya . most estimates of its death toll world wide put it near the the one 14th century so in term of lethality it wasnt that inferior at all

If it was true that it killed off 40% of the population then it rivaled the 14th century plague in percentage. Deaths would have been less simply as there wasn't as many people - cool name BTW

A carpenter reached into a old wall and was bitten by a rat a couple of years ago in Bergen,Norway and developed very similar symptoms. Gives you the heeby jeebys,but they are able to fight it more effectively now.

When the plague hit medieval Europe so many workers died that the cost of labor especially skilled labor went up giving the working classes an advantage -what's the old saying "it's an ill wind that brings no good" or "every cloud has a silver lining."

Thanks for the great video! Prior to the 14th century plague (the "Black Death"), there was wetter, colder weather in Europe, and crops failed. At that time, the population was the highest Europe ever had, so famine hit. Due to a denser population, there were far more rats. This allowed Yersinia pestis to spread and kill much more than it normally would. Similarly, before the Justinian plague, the cooler weather and dimmer sunlight probably lowered crop yields. Nutrition is important for immunity. The lack of adequate trash and sewage disposal plus densely populated cities greatly increased the rat population. Cats and dogs killed rats, but they are also not resistant to Y. pestis, so the plague wiped them out too.

Cats are highly susceptible to plague and are a common source, of Yersinia pestis infection in humans (owners and veterinarians). Dogs infected with plague, are less likely to develop clinical illness than cats.

@@alexanderkordas682 So true. I recall reading about a dead mountain lion discovered in in the US West. It was found to have died from the plague after eating infected rodents, perhaps marmots. If canines were as susceptible, we'd be seeing more dead coyotes and domestic dogs which had succumbed to Yersinia pestis infection. I don't know how prevalent plague is in western US rodents, but it is a scary thought. Even if we do have the antibiotics to cure it, it must be diagnosed and treated in time.

One side of my family actually retained a oral history from how they were chased from their place during the last plague(black death) and came to a valley in Norway completely depopulated where they settled down and worked the fields.

It has been proposed that the lower temperature was the reason that allowed the blood of the flea to coagulate. The famous black death occurred during another cold period as well.

In only 100 years no one will remember you or anyone you know. Yet reality is endless. This puts the importance of things, people, events and beliefs in proper perspective.

I can track it back 400 years or so. They're all dull as ditchwater and completely uninteresting, bar one beardy Quaker mayor and migratory steam engines (Paxmans - Marriages Mills Colchester 1898, currently working in Malaysia in a fabrics/clothing factory 2022) - apparently I didn't even get the braca genes from them, my dad's agrochemicals career is to blame for that. 3G3N ductile carcinoma.

During the time of the Early Roman Empire (and further back well into early antiquity) there was not much uproar of homosexuality or bisexulaity - it was considered just and aspect of human nature. Once Christianity took hold there were more substantial derogatory connotations - but I'll be the first to say that I'm no expert in giving a better analysis to this.

If there's ever a time you feel that your religion or God justifies your actions or your hubris. Remember that he also gave these bacteria these miraculous powers of adaptation. These rats and fleas their resilience. Humans might not even be God's favorite creature, much less you being God's favorite human. It's hard to provide more compelling evidence that even if there is a God at work, that he doesn't care about the plight of the individual, king or peasant. Did the mighty bacteria worship him to receive their mandate on this earth, for they are arguably the most powerful living force. And even now that we know so much about them with all of our "gifts" we are more or less powerless against them by either use of those gifts (vaccines) nor by faith in God. Live life for the people you meet and be kind, not because you're being judged by God but because you're needed by your neighbor.

france by a mile the uk has nukes but most of its military is not in great shape, a lot of equipment is ageing or already so old it is almost museum piece vintage. also the french have a lot more reserves they have a very large paramilitary capability. the french also have the third of fourth largest nuclear stockpile. now germany is a bit of anomaly becaue a lot of the complaints about the military capacity are less based in fact and more in politics. yes they have some major problems but they are nowhere near as bad as is often claimed and many other militaries including the us have some of those exact same problems.
