Neoseiulus californicus: Pear shaped, tan colored mite. They have a slower paced eating habit, which allows them to survive longer with limited food supply. Works great for preventative control. Feeds on Two-Spotted Spider Mites, Broad Mites, Cyclamen Mites, Russet Hemp Mites, and many other species of mites.
Amblyseius cucumeris: A. cucumeris is a species of predatory mite that feeds on immature stages of thrips. It also feeds on pollen when food sources are low, Two-Spotted Spider Mites, and many other species of mites. Cucumeris adults are pear-shaped, tan colored mites.

After watching you talking about them and googling, I was 100% sure my oldest plant had flat mites. It’s an 18+ year old Hoya carnosa compacta. It stayed alive but stopped growing and stopped blooming for 10 years. It stayed green so I kept watering it. After watching you, I used a miticide about once a week for several weeks, so many weeks 😂. Today it finally has tiny baby leaves and a little bit of new stem growing. I’m so incredibly excited. Thank you for sharing your experience.

That little envelope or what looks like a tag that you have in the pot is beneficial mites? How or what does that tag do? Don't you let the beneficial mites roam free in the plant? How do the beneficials work?@@plantsbymelissa

Yes! I’m so happy you covered this topic. I recently wrote a blog about it because I was so frustrated with the misconception that only sulphur would kill them. I’ve had them on my Hoya pubicalyx twice because I didn’t keep treating it long enough to wipe out the eggs the first time. Understanding the long life cycle is key. They’re actually not half as scary as some of the other mites because they multiply so slowly and don’t spread as easily. Well done on a well-researched video!

Thank you! 🙏🏼 I really thought sulfur was the only treatment when I first found out about them and wished I had done a little more research initially. There’s definitely a misconception about that! I’m glad I could share my situation! They’re definitely not as scary and I appreciate your comment! 🫶🏻

Thank you SO MUCH for this video. I am 99% sure my whole plant collection is infested by flat mites. I was wondering why I didn't see any actual webbing but plant leaves specifically on my pothos were turning yellow and falling off. A lot of my plants have physical damage and spotting. Felt like I was losing my MIND. Just treated with bonide granules for fungus gnats only to read they make mites worse. 😭😭😭 Will probably be buying some beneficial mites in two weeks after the bonide granules wear off. Also appreciate the kind words of encouragement in your video. I'm losing my absolute shit over here. 😂

Horticultural oil works great for me. I’ve tried all kinds of soaps, the “super soap” with spinosad, neem, and also cold pressed neem. I was about to give up and go systemic, but decided to try one last “organic” thing. The all seasons hort oil has made a very noticeable difference after just 2 uses. Now I need that microscope to make sure I got them all

Yes! You can definitely drive yourself crazy and I did too after having them for the first time last summer. You can treat them and the plants will be okay. You’ll want to stay on top of things but don’t let it worry you so much. You’ll get rid of them and do what you can but don’t overwhelm yourself! 🤗

Thanks for sharing this video. I was recently gifted a hoya varigated kerrii. It looks like it has broad mites. They have a lot of little bumps, and the leaves look distorted. Does the grow light hurt the leaves? And, does the sulfur kill thrips, too?

Hi Melissa, I am wondering what level of zoom you used in the footage you shared with us, so I know what size to look for (if that makes any sense). I have been looking at a few plants and don’t see anything at all, other than dust and a few markings on the plant. Maybe I am not looking close enough? Or maybe I am on the clear and should tackle a different problem? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I just found flat mites on some of my Hoyas, this is the second time, the first time was last summer. Just sprayed them with sulfur, left them in the sink overnight and this morning I sprayed them with insecticidal soap, soapy suds to get the sulfur spots off & used a blush makeup brush that’s dedicated for this stuff to give them a good wash. Rinsed them off and put them in a little greenhouse box. I’ll check them next week and repeat. I’m with you though, didn’t even inspect the rest, they appear to be ok so why bother. These guys are so annoying but it doesn’t freak me out as much anymore. I’ve been on a 1.5month recurring beneficial bugs schedule but I still get these dumb mites, it’s just part of being a plant parent I guess, like dirty diapers 🤮🤣🤣
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa Жыл бұрын
lol dirty diapers. Ugh, I hate that you got them again even with prevention in place! It's crazy how I didn't even know these kinds of mites existed! It's definitely made me more aware of what to look out for. Your treatment method sounds like it works great! Hoping they're gone for you soon!!

Maybe not the choice for everyone but in my opinion, for common easily attainable plants(like the maranta/calathea),I would opt to toss them. Just not worth the time, money, mess, emotional stress and risk of infesting other plants in my collection.
@plantsbymelissa
@plantsbymelissa Жыл бұрын
Ahh 🥹 I can understand but definitely disagree! You’re wasting money by just tossing them and all the time you spent caring for and growing them. I have an emotional attachment to some plants and couldn’t give up on them. It’s easy to buy a new one but it’s not the same plant and at some point pests happen again. You just have to figure out a preventative method that works for you. And just because a plant is not as expensive or more attainable doesn’t make it less valuable 🫶🏻
@charlottecobain6986
@charlottecobain6986 Жыл бұрын
@@plantsbymelissa100% agree. I really dislike that it’s such common advice to just throw plants away because of pests. Yes, it’s stressful, but unless a plant had a bad virus like mosaic or disease like blight that was going to spread to my other plants I’m not going to just throw them away even if I can get new ones.
@beanybee
@beanybee Жыл бұрын
I agree. Especially the part about money, time, and emotional labor. Those things are so very important and a limited resource for a lot of us. Sinking it all into a houseplant that can be swapped out for $12 isn't something everyone can do. I understand why people wouldn't want to do that but for some its a super valid option and should not be frowned upon.

Been trying to figure out for weeks why all my marantas randomly started curling up, yellowing, and dying. I had a huge red maranta and I only have a few small pieces of it left… now my lemon lime is doing the same thing. I wish I knew where the mites came from, none of my other plants are affected. I’m so annoyed, but fortunately I only have 2 other small marantas and I think I maybe caught it early enough.
