I'm sure that the average person is not comfortable with cutting the glass for obvious reasons , and when I watched Tanner create the IKEA diy aquariums I was so impressed with the quality of the glass shelves and the only way to go if you are interested in the DIY route !!Thank you for sharing this great 💡

I saw the original and have got my eye on doing this. I also couldn't workout in my head how they were meant to line up perfectly with the sizes available. You would need a 37cm square piece.

This is late, the dimensions are for the system and not the actual glass and that’s where confusion is coming in It all should fit relatively similar to how serpas did

To solve the raised sides problem, you could buy a couple of UTRUSTA wooden shelves and put them underneath the tank. The UTRUSTA shelf is 1.8 cm thick so you would be able to hide the high side panels. Another thing that I would do, is to make a wooden frame and put it around the tank's bottom to hide the wooden shelves and add some strength to the base of the tank. I am planning to make this DIY project next month.

I know that this is a few months old now but I only just found this video. I watched the original a while ago and had the same thought to try it here in UK, but soon realised the issue I would face so, I've just watched back the video on Sherpa's channel and noticed that there is a 1/4 inch or so difference in height between the sides and back/front. So I checked the US IKEA website and noticed that they have extra sizes than in the UK (they have 6 sizes to choose from and we only get 4). One of theirs is a 15x14 3/4 (inches) which is the (almost) square piece that is needed for the ends as 14 3/4 inches is the common size to all of the shelf kits. Nice job with yours though, looks great

I love the raised the sides. They are perfect for mounting the horizontal lighting fixtures on elevating the lights just a little higher than the waterline. Its genius! Wouldnt have thought about it until i saw that you pointed out the higher sides.

Just watched Serapa designs video, then yours. Both are good! I'm still struggling with the kind of silicone to use here in the US. I've seen where some people say the GE Silicone 1 we used to use, isn't safe anymore. Something about it being mold resistant now. Some say it's only a different label on it now, but it's the same stuff we always used. I know your not in the US but does your silicone also say "mold resistant" on it? Thanks for the video. Always love whatever you put up, in your videos. Maybe I just love your accent...LOL. Well I do, but deffinately not the only reason I love your videos! Thanks again. Have an awesome day!

Nice job but having done many tanks myself I'll offer you a few suggestions. First make sure the silicone you use is food safe. If it isn't it will likely poison your fish. Second store bought complete tanks are generally cheaper than do it yourself unless you just happen to have some glass laying around. Now on building the tanks. Have large cans of canned goods on the table. Use them to prop up the glass panels as you work so your hands are free. Now if you work very fast you can do it all at once but if this is your first try only do one panel at a time because from the first bead you run until the last panel is set you have around five minutes until the silicone skins and won't give you a good attachment. If you can work fast enough then you can seal the inside as he did but if you take your time then let it cure overnight, then with a razor blade trim the inside silicone and run the inside bead. Before you start assembly it's a good idea to wipe all the glass edges with alcohol to remove any oils from cutting and handling the glass.

Useful tips for the can stand and I am going to take your advice on the sealing the inside a couple days later! I have been successful with resealing and I enjoy the process leading up to the actual sealing w 100% Silicone and 101% stinks but I am not capable of driving by a fre tank or anything that might be worth a look. I know that you are going to be really much better off if you are taking a free aquarium and the average resealing is a good 10 years if it is done right and handled in the same manner then I will be happy to get a role of tape & aquarium safe Silicone and a few other inexpensive tools that you have to buy !!! Free ,free ,free .saving Bettas is well worth it to me. 💙💚

@@stoneysscapes7544 100% silicone may not be safe to use. It should say food safe on the tube or be labeled aquarium use. I ordered mine on amazon to use on tank equipment. I would suggest any silicone you intend to use look it up on the manufactureres web site and get all the info on the type of silicone you have. If it doesn't tell you it's safe then don't use it. I've had fairly pricy marine fish and live corals and it's simply not worth the risk of killing them all to save money on the sealer. When trimming the inside sealer always keep the razor blade at an angle to the seam so the edge doesn't go into the seam disturbing the seal between the panels. Wipe with alcohol and then add the inside filet. Many years ago dow corning produced a booklet that showed how to build tanks and even had plans for different shaped tanks you could build. Things like L-shaped tanks, corner tanks, coffee table tanks and more. All the fish stores used to carry large tubes of aquarium silicone but now all they seem to have is small tubes and if you need a caulking tube you pretty much have to order it online. I haven't found any lumberyards or dry goods stores that stock food safe silicone in years. They might carry fifty different types but none are suitable for an aquarium. If you plan on breeding bettas you'll need a top on the tank. They require 100% humidity to keep young fry alive as they breathe the air above the water. Enjoy the hobby, I have for nearly 70 years now and still do.

I also suggest aquarium silicone within the skinning time which is 5 minutes when using Selleys Glass in Australia. Other brands also appear to skin in about 5 minutes. Therefore it is easiest to apply, smooth and remove tape one or two sides at a time to get it done smoothly without it skinning before you finish.

@TheEvilNickel
@TheEvilNickel Жыл бұрын
If you put the long pieces resting on the bottom piece, and the short pieces resting against the bottom piece. You make the ends .25 inches shorter and the long sides .25 inches taller, which would solve your half an inch of extra glass. I made mine this way and it fixed the problem. There is only a slight lip on the edge. I tried really hard to do it the exact way he did it, but It doesn't fit right.

I just made one of these aquariums using the same glass and I attached the end pieces rotated 90 degrees and glued to outside edges instead and fits well without raised edges at top. Just put a slightly thicker bead along the front and back so that corners all align well at ends. I may add vertical 12mmx1.6mm aluminium angles to uprights for extra strength later but I don’t think it is necessary. Silicone for aquarium use is very strong on glass.

@@eva_1977 Part2 Lay long piece flat on table as a base. Place another long piece, as the front and back sides, next to the base with the edge resting on the table. (it is not resting on top of the base piece). As viewed from the end |_| and is 34.6cm high. Place the end pieces so that they also rest on the table (it is not resting on top of the base piece). As viewed from the side |___| and is 34.6cm high. Try rotating the end piece 90 degrees so that the long side, 36.3 cm, is resting on the table to get a reasonable fit. This should now give you an aquarium with all top edges fitting at the same level. You will need to add a very slightly thicker bead of silicone on the base 76.3cm sides from memory to get the edges to align with the ends. 346 + (6mm thickness x2) = 358mm needs 2.5mm bead of sicicone each side to reach 363mm.

Isn't it worth making a V shaped jig (like a saw horse) to hold the glass sides.? When you place the glass in the V jig they should sit together in the bottom of the V without you holding them until they are set.glued. If you make the jig V more than 90degs you can shim up the glass plates until they are perfectly 90 degs. this seems a better technique esp if you are on your own.

If the big ones are 80x37 and the small ones 30x37, the 37 side of the sides would line up to the 37 side of the bottom. The front lines up to the 80 side of the bottom and is thus 37 high. The side would be 30 high, how does this stick out above the front, I don't understand.
