This is a short film about my first trip to Aitutaki fly fishing for large bonefish on the crystal clear flats of the Cook Islands. What a great place with challenging sight fishing for large bonefish with weather that made things a bit difficult.

Crazy About Fishing on a side note have you tried flounder on fly? Obviously not bone fish but a fun target if you can find enough of them. I used to get other flats species in oz but I think flounder is all we would have in auckland lol!

@@AdriftFishing I have heard they are fun but haven't given them a go yet. Must make a point to do so at some stage.

I love fishing there, heading back for my 3rd trip in September. Its a low numbers fishery but that is very tough going. Try book a few days with E2 if you go back.

It was so addictive. Can't wait to go back. Will definitely consider a couple of guides days next time. All the best for your trip in September.

@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Funnily enough, that previous trip was cancelled due to Covid, only just opened up again to Australians a while back so I am heading over in a few weeks (via a week on your local the Tongariro).

Great to hear you get to go again. Will went back along with a mTe of mine as soon as it opened back up for NZ. They had a great trip and each landed multiple solid bones. Hopefully I'll get to go back some time soon. Enjoy your trip and also the Tongariro which is fishing very well between floods.

One of my most favorite places on the planet. I also ran into big time winds when we visited so only got to fish the milk ... didn’t even make a video because just wasn’t enough good material for it 😑 next time I suppose. Great video! And congrats on landing that big ol’ beauty of a bone!!

Crazy About Fly Fishing totally agree. A little tough for us to get there from Colorado but still planning to make it happen in next year or two

Great video. Can I ask did you just go there for a fish. No guides ? I’m looking to going there as they just started direct flights from Australia this week. Can you just go where you were fishing and sight fish as you did ? Or do a days guiding and then go for it ? Love all your vids particularly the NZ trout ones and the saltwater fly. Keep them up. Thanks Mike, glad you enjoy the vids. Aitutaki has some options for DIY but if it's your first time I would highly suggest you get guided for at least 2 to 3 days. Once you have a few fish under your belt it gets a bit easier plus the guides have access to a lot more flats. Without a boat you are limited to only a few flats you can reach on foot and or drive to depending on where you are staying. It's a great place but definitely tough fishing for big bonefish. There are also lots of trevally and other reefy species as well which can be a bit easier to catch. I have another video of trip from April this year that I am currently working on. Hopefully I will get that out in a month or so. Tight lines

Great video and storytelling, making me want to go next year when some normality with covid goes away. where's the best place to stay with bonefish out the front door.

Anywhere around Ootu beach. Just wade across the channel and the bones will be tailing in front of you. That's where I had the lightning event on the last day. The channel is deep in places but short and the water warm. Big flats out in front. There is car and scooter hire nearby and the Koru Cafe has great food and coffee. It gives you access to a lot of great fishing. A day trip over to One Foot Island is a must as well. For guides get in touch with Butch from Aitutaki Blue Lagoon Fly Fishing or Itu and his crew. It's worth spending a day or two with a guide at least if you can. It's a great place.
