This method can be applied to any anvil face, and can ensure a flatness of less than 1/32"! It doesn't take an expensive machine either; I'm using my $60 4 1/2" angle grinder. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments below!

thanks for this...i wanted to make a piece of steel...flat...tried workin it by hand but was discouraged...so checked utube...i think i am gonna try toto use a grinder disc instead of a flap disc...but it is fun to see peeps tryin to save money that otherwise we could not afford...to pay a machine shop.

I am about to try something similar with stone and a cupped diamond blade. Instead of a wooden 'stool' I am using a 6ft wide steel rolling shop table.

Is there anything more aggressive then flap disk ? I need to shave off 1/4

Educational, gave me some ideas but the grinder / plywood solution has it's own problems: the disc uses up and the floor has to be leveled and smooth (not every workshop has those conditions). Still not bad. Keep it up

hardware store sells precision pressed wood, 5$ should give you enough for a flat base to use the jig on.

That must be loud when striking it. Put some sand in the middle and weld some end caps on it.

You probably want to chanfur the edge because if your forging on the edge of the anvil it will leave nasty marks

It's a nice idea, but scraping something flat is ment to be a delicate procedure. Showing the high spots with your file and then hitting them with the angle grinder is simply going to remove too much material. Angle grinder is just to agressive. I did like your jig, that's probably the best way to do it, short of a LOT of filing or a milling machine. Thanks for sharing the video 👍. Stay safe and God bless

Hey, it's not you, it's me, but MAJOR pet peeve.... Flat and level are not synonymous. An angle bracket on a steel bridge can be flat, but it is most definitely not level. Level is completely perpendicular to the direction of gravity, in the place were you are. You cant check level with a ruler/ straight edge. Spirit bubble levels are not even scientifically accurate, but they are way closer than the human eye. The occasional human can detect out of level by as little as 1 degree, after years of working with it, but that's another story. Sorry for the rant, but left unchecked these mis-uses tend to spread. The anvil is looking great.

Luke Edward Mixter looks like you took care of most of the level issue with your crooked lead base box. I wasn't downing you, just saying. You're doing great.

If you want to check flatness, obtain a polished 15" X 15" piece of granite; use blue layout fluid to cover your surface. Once dried, place stone, polished side down, and apply pressure. Lift the stone off the anvil and look for removed ink. This will be your high spots. Use a fine stone to remove the high spots. Repeat as necessary to obtain the flatness desired. Steam turbine shells are mated this way to eliminate leaks without gaskets.
