Almost 30 years later and Mortal Kombat theme still slaps.

I love all the actors in this film. Even the minor ones. They were so good that all the future games were forever influenced by them. That is talent.

Never in my life have I seen someone get so enthusiastic about end credits. Flawless victory.

I saw this movie as a kid in the theater. It was sold out and during the opening credits when the music hit and it said Mortal Kombat! Everyone cheered and you saw popcorn thrown up in the air, I'll never forget that. Was awesome.

And then came the sequel, "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation". It's official tagline was "Destroy all expectations". Never in history has a movie's tagline been more accurate.

Kano in the video game was originally English, but Trevor Goddard's version became so iconic that they changed his nationality in the future games to Australian. Everyone in this movie nailed their roles.

That photo of Johnny after the fight with Scorpion (the yellow and black ninja) was a reference to the games. When you win a fight, you can do a number of "finishers", some being very gruesome and over the top killings ("fatalities"), but there are also so called "friendship moves", where it is something really cute and innoncent. Johnny Cage's "friendship" move is to give out a signed photo of himself, since he is a moviestar.

Oh! For the latest game, Mortal Kombat 11, they actually brought back Cary Tagawa as Shang Tsung! And as an addon, they also managed to get Christopher Lambert, Bridget Wilson, and Linden Ashby back to be optional voices and costumes for Raiden, Sonya, and Johnny respectively

One of those movies that doesn't take itself seriously, is full of nineties cheese and just has a blast with its source material. Also, that damned song, it's impossible to not wanna immediately go back to my childhood and playfight with my friends on the school field.

This movie has one of the best Soundtrack albums ever. Pure 90s techno delight. Also, Christopher Lambert playing Raiden totally over-the-top was perfect.

Chris Lambert is in a few classic movies. Highlander, Fortress, Mean Guns, I think all of them are good movie fun. Goro was as animatronic. I saw in an interview that it gave them a lot of trouble so that's why he is CG in some scenes. Great video game adaptation. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa plays a great villain. He is the villain in Showdown In Little Tokyo. It was released in 91 but is very much an 80s action movie. I group it together with Big Trouble In Little China but it is a bit more serious in tone.

The two biggest influences on the first game were Bloodsport (JCVD > Johnny Cage) and Big Trouble in Little China (the Three Storms > Raiden), so props to you for seeing the connection. This movie did a really great job at capturing the tone of the game, with its whiplash between taking itself seriously (the martial artistry, the character motivations) and not at all (the plot, the lore). The music really elevated things, too. The score is great at setting the tone, and the soundtrack was phenomenal. It really started a 90s trend of movies with fantastic soundtrack albums, along with Hackers, and really brought techno / "EDM" to the mainstream for a hot minute. The Orbital track near the end, when Liu is briefly reunited with his brother's spirit, led to a life-long obsession on my part with that band. The main theme, which plays at the start of the credits, was created by "The Immortals", which is a side project by Lords of Acid (a fact that's obvious if you hear their other music), and it was actually created a year or two *before* the movie for "Mortal Kombat: The Album" (which the Mortal Kombat 2 arcade game advertised for sale via mail order). All of the credits songs are on the movie soundtrack album, BTW! Oh, when you were listing hot people at the end, you (very reasonably) omitted Kano / Trevor Goddard, but, uh, a lot of gay men are both disgusted and turned on by him, to the extent that there's a lot of ... art... of Kano from Mortal Kombat 11 (who is modeled after Goddard's Kano). While MK: Annihilation is... not the world's best sequel... the soundtrack for it was the best part. There was also another soundtrack album between them, Mortal Kombat: More Kombat, which I loved deeply.

The soundtrack for this movie is pure fire. Watching you bobbing to the music got me smiling, because I know how good it is. Another awesome film I watched with my siblings as a kid. Even my two sisters love this movie. One of the films that got me really into martial arts and I've been training since a very young age. Not traditionally, but on my own. This movie is so good. They even included things directly from the games even though they're goofy to a casual viewer. Goro was a practical puppet and was an absolute pain for the people behind the camera. Special effects technician Tom Woodruff Jr. wore a Goro torso over his shoulders, such that Tom's head remained concealed inside Goro's chest and Tom's arms served as Goro's lower arms. It took multiple people to operate, but I think it came out great. So underrated. It's sad that the second film is such a disappointment. Oh, and Christopher Lambert is awesome in The Highlander. "There can be only one" This was a really fun one that had me smiling the whole time. 😊 I have played a lot of the Mortal Kombat games over the years. Mortal Kombat 9 & 10 are my favorites. I would probably want to be Kung Lao. The newest Mortal Kombat movie wasn't too bad. I liked things about it, but disliked some things about it as well. Still worthy of a watch. It's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation that is pretty awful, but I have to admit that I still watch it from time to time just as a filthy guilty pleasure.

One of my all time favorite movies. Special FX might not have aged well, but the heart and effort put into this movie has. Masterpiece for what it is.

It's time to test your might, Angel.. Here's a few secrets to help you navigate Outworld and help get your flawless victory. All the exterior shots were done in remote coastal areas of Thailand that can only be accessible by boat. In order to help accommodate the cast and crew, they had to build an outhouse in a secluded area to avoid constant trips to and from the mainland. The film has heavy influence from the 1973 Bruce Lee classic, Enter The Dragon. Robin Shou worked as a stuntman in Hong Kong, often playing henchman roles before landing the role of Liu Kang. He was given free reign by the fight choreographers to help come up with his routines and worked with director Paul WS Anderson (who at the time had no experience on action films) structure the fight scenes so they would better appear on camera. He also listed as the stunt coordinator for the film. Johnny Cage is based on Jean-Claude Van Damme and Van Damme was originally offered the role of Johnny but he turned it down to do Street Fighter instead. Some other big names that were being considered for the role of Johnny Cage include Gary Daniels, Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp, with the role eventually going to Linden Ashby, who had prior martial arts experience but exclusively trained in Tae Kwon Do and Karate for the role. The journey to cast Sonya Blade is an interesting one, as originally one of the first names to be cast in the role was 1988 Miss Teen USA Kathleen McClellan, however, she was injured on set and had to bow out of the role, then there was a list of actresses to replace her including Sharon Stone, Dina Meyer, Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate and Bridgette Wilson. But due to the extensive casting process, Wilson left to go film Billy Madison and Cameron Diaz got the part due to producers being impressed by her dailies in The Mask. Unfortunately, Diaz broke her wrist during training right before filming began and had to bow out as well and Wilson, who had just wrapped up Billy Madison, was available but had to immediately report to Thailand, which left her no choice but to do all of her fight training either the day of shooting and in between takes. In the original Mortal Kombat game, the character of Kano was originally Japanese. However creators Ed Boon and John Tobias were so impressed with actor Trevor Goddard's performance, that they retconned the game character to permanently make him Australian. Irony of ironies is that Trevor Goddard was actually English with a thick Cockney accent but the retcon still stands to this day especially as a tribute to Goddard, who passed away in 2003. The character of Raiden, while traditionally Asian, was offered to both Danny Glover and Sean Connery before going to French actor, Christopher Lambert. Director Paul W S Anderson credits Lambert for helping helping him with his first major Hollywood film as Lambert's laid back attitude helped set the tone behind the scenes, putting many of the cast and crew at ease for such a big production. Because he was also the most expensive actor on set, production could only afford him for a few weeks of close-ups in LA and planned to use stand ins for the wide shots in Thailand but Lambert believed the movie would do better with him all the time, that he came to Thailand at no extra charge and even paid for the wrap party afterwards. Lambert is also considered to be quite an avid gamer which made him participating in this even more fascinating. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa was the director's first choice to play Shang Tsung. Tagawa came to the audition in costume and read his lines while standing on a chair, captivating the casting agents with his gravitas. Tagawa's performance was so highly regarded that he was brought back to portray the character in the limited web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Paul WS Anderson was immediately offered to helm the sequel but opted to do something different, which gave us one of my favorite horror films, Event Horizon instead. Unfortunately, he regretted not being involved in the making of the sequel, which was considered subpar on multiple levels. This is one of the primary reasons that when he made the first Resident Evil film, he stayed involved to either Direct or help production for the remainder of the series. Because of the legacy of this film, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa has been brought back to portray Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat 11 as a downloadable character while Linden Ashby, Bridgette Wilson and Christopher Lambert reprise their roles as exclusive DLC skins with the actors also providing voice overs. So in the two-part Johnny Cage the Scorpion fight, the second half, which is supposed to take place in Scorpion's lair, was an empty airport Hangar that was built from the top down with bamboo and various other platforms and structures for the actors to work in. In the original setup for the Liu Kang versus Sub-Zero fight, both men were supposed to do acrobatics down the ramp but Robin Shou couldn't figure out the acrobatics and ended up as a joke doing a running Superman punch, which ended up being used in the film. Talisa Soto (Kitana) and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa co-starred in the 1989 James Bond film, License to Kill. The director looking like Steven Spielberg isn't a coincidence. Spielberg was actually in talks to make an appearance in the film as the director of the Johnny Cage film but due to scheduling conflicts was unavailable so they intentionally hired a look alike for the scene. The fight between Reptile and Liu Kang wasn't in the first draft and was added on after test audiences enjoyed the film but complained that there weren't enough 1v1 fights. The studio and producers were going back and forth on how they wanted the soundtrack to be as the studio wanted more traditional Rock and rap while producers envisioned more of an EDM Style score. The Producers ended up winning that argument which is why the soundtrack ended up charting very well and unofficially became one of the most popular soundtracks of all time. I was 11 when this came out and I remember going to the theater with both my mom and my uncle who I didn't know how they were going to react to seeing Mortal Kombat but they ended up loving the film and my uncle and I ended up going to the arcade in the lobby and play a couple rounds in the machine there. It's a great time and I know the theme these days is to try and make them as explicit as possible but even for all it's flaws, and there are quite a few, I'm a grinning idiot whenever I think of this film.

The band that wrote the soundtrack is actually Lords of Acid. They couldn't use their normal moniker, and formed the side project The Immortals just to do this soundtrack, and have not released anything else under the name since because they were already a real musical act and release music under Lords of Acid. It's House/EDM/Industrial mash-up of sound, and very energetic.

You're a legend! The first and only who gave a special appreciation to the epic, timeless classic of a soundtrack this movie had :) The main theme especially has become a pop icon. But the rest of the music in this film is world shuttering, even more so because you don't expect it to be. And yes, it's one of the only films I watched 5 times at the cinema, with all my friends on each time.

This was an event in my hometown when it released. Our movie theater had mounted speakers set up around the whole interior to immerse the audience in the experience, and the manager hired two local teachers from martial arts training schools to dress up as Scorpion and Sub-Zero for the opening weekend. It was great! So many cheers, so much energy in the crowd, so many young fans who had been lined up at the arcades and local 7-Eleven feeding quarters into Mortal Kombat 1 and 2. It seriously was like being at a rock concert. And then at the end, once everyone was leaving, I'll never forget some shlubby-looking kid giving me a weird look and telling me, "Hey man the movie's over," on his way out. Ahh if only he knew. I've always stayed for credits in theaters, but this had to be one of the most kick-ass adrenaline-pumping end title sequences I had yet to see. They set the benchmark for what a film's credits ought to be. "Mortal Kombat" 1995 is an absolute win. Maybe not a flawless victory, but one heck of a cinematic win nonetheless. There's a reason it's still fun to watch. I also agree wholeheartedly with you about the cast. They truly are what helped make it all work so well. Cary Tagawa is such a great villain! So good in fact that he reprised the role in the 2009 web series "Mortal Kombat Legacy" and returned to officially voice the character in the latest video game (MK 11). As for the latest cinematic reboot from 2021... well it certainly has one good fight in it, that the studio then milked and finagled an entire movie around. - _ - Yeah, the less said about that one the better. If nothing else, it's a strong lesson in why you need to have fun with the material that you adapt, like this one did.

Director Paul Anderson said he had literally no idea what he was doing when he was making this as it was his first movie of this kind and he absolutely killed it I can rewatch this movie over and over.

If you've only ever seen Christopher Lambert in Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, then I have a couple of movie recommendations. First, Fortress. It's super cheesy early 90s action schlok. You'd love it. Second, & more importantly, Highlander. Which has a soundtrack by the band, Queen & one of cinema's greatest villains of all time played by the guy who voiced Mr Krabbs on Spongebob.

Bought soundtracks of both movies on audiocassetes in 1998. There's just something about them! They opened the path for me and my friends to learn more about metal and 90s electronic music! When I was playing MK games in the late 90s I usually turned on the soundtracks from MK movies on my boombox! 😄 MK was a huge part of my childhood since the first movie came out when I was 6-7! Ah, memories!

This movie is "Enter the Dragon", "Bloodsport", and "Big Trouble in Little China" all crammed into one package.

If you need more of the 90s hyper cheese, especially the terrible (awesome?) music, hackers (1995) is a gold mine.

For a lot of people, the soundtrack to this film was their introduction to the "Industrial" and "EBM" subgenres of music, and the entore soundtrack is often up there with "The Crow" and "The Lost Boys" for members of the goth scene

I saw this in the theater while I was stationed in Orlando for nuke E.M. school. Loved the end credits music so much that I went and bought the soundtrack right after the movie was over. I have that cd in my truck cd player right now.

I remember seeing this in theaters. And when it was released on Pay per View (if anyone knows/remembers what that was) my mom let me record it. I was obsessed with this movie growing up. I was 9 when this movie came out, and it’s still my favorite Mortal Kombat movie. The new movie has its moments. It just doesn’t get me with the new character and story.

I was fifteen when this came out and the soundtrack has stuck by me the entire time as a throwback option but also it turned me on to so many bands I'd never heard of. This soundtrack is a superstar list of underground techno, metal, and industrial music.

I haven't read all the comments so I don't know if anybody mentioned this but the reason the fighting looked so good and real is because it was. They actually hit each other. The soundtrack to this movie is absolute fire and the score is pretty amazing. The score was composed by George S. Clinton, if you know, you know. Also, the soundtrack did so well that they created another off-shoot soundtrack called Mortal Kombat: More Kombat, I would give that a listen too. The Mortal Kombat Annihilation (the sequel movie) soundtrack was really good too (even if the movie did mostly suck).

This movie was supposed to be rated R but the filmmakers hands were tied behind their backs and had to cut it down to pg13. The fact that this film still holds up today and told a better cohesive story than the reboot that came out earlier this year says something

In 1995 this movie was the Bomb still is 30 years later, and Cary has repriced his role of Tshang Sung in the newer video games he did the voice. And he played Tshang Sung again in Mortal Kombat legacy season 2 the you tube series.

MK was inspired by the Kung Fu movies of the 70's but the two biggest influences were Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon and The Flying guillotine. I think everyone played this game when it came out. It was like nothing anyone had ever seen before and the special move and combos were brutal but it was the fatalities that kept people coming back for more. With every version of the game that came out they amped it up. As for the storyline in the movie that to came right from the game as well. MK was so popular that they even had two show related to it. WMAC Masters and Mortal Kombat Conquest along with the other movies. The new MK that came out last year was a prequel for this movie and it was pretty good so you should check that out some day. Great reaction. By the way I didn't like Christopher Lanber for this film as first but mid way through the movie I was in. Fun fact, in the last MK game they used a multiverse theme and included facial captures of these actor and as well as voicing them again. It was awesome.

It did take inspiration from Big Trouble. John Tobias and Ed Boon said they based Shang off Lo Pan (in the game) and the 3 Storms end up being Raiden and eventually Fujin. If there was ever a movie deserving of the "guilty pleasure" title for me it's this one. I know it's stupid and cheesy, but I don't care one bit. If you want more Christopher Lambert, his most legendary role is Highlander. If you want impressive fight scenes, watch The Raid 1 and 2.

I think you'd be surprised how much of this movie was original and ended up influencing the games themselves more than the other way around. Mortal Kombat the video game started development as a tie-in fighting game featuring Hollywood martial arts movie star Jean Claude Van Dam. When that deal fell through, the developers decided to simply 'base' an original character off Jean Claude Van Dam and instead give him a different name: Johnny Cage. With that precedent set, they proceeded to fill out the rest of the heroes roster by creating other characters based on Hollywood martial arts movie stars - Liu Kang (based on Bruce Lee), and Sonya Blade (based on female martial artist Cynthia Rothrock). The movie's main theme, the very 90s dance theme with someone screaming "Mortal Kombat!" throughout it, was specifically created for this movie. Interestingly, it was by far the most well-received thing about the film, as pretty much everyone agreed it was an absolute banger. It's so well remembered that a variation of it is featured in the Tournament stage in the latest game, Mortal Kombat 11. There's no point in time during any of the games that anyone ever actually screams "Mortal Kombaaaat!!!" While lines like "Finish Him!", "Flawless Victory", and "Fatality!" were all spoken in the first game by an announcer, the original game didn't really have much spoken dialogue outside of him. About the only character who did have a spoken line in the game was Scorpion's "Get Over Here!", which as you know shows up in the movie. Thusly classic movie lines such as Shang Tsung's "Your soul is mine!" originated in this film and have nonetheless become mainstays of the video game series itself. In the original arcade game, Shang Tsung is depicted as an old, long white haired sorcerer. 1993's Mortal Kombat II game reimagined him as a younger version of himself, rejuvenated with the magic of souls by Outworld's Sorcerer-Emperor Shao Kahn. When the movie came out in 1995, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa was cast to play this young version of Shang Tsung even in the first film due to his martial arts experience and the fact that he's just really, really good at playing villains. In spite of various voice actors coming in to play the role of Shang Tsung in later games (using the power of CG modeling to age and de-age Shang Tsung as needed), its been pretty much agreed that no video game adaptation of Shang Tsung has ever lived up to Tagawa's interpretation. While there is a second, follow-up film to this one, it was made on a shoe-string budget and had most of the film's stars recast (Christopher Lambert does not return as Raiden, for instance), and while I liked the second film as a kid, I definitely can't say its quite as well done as the first movie. If you want to react to the Mortal Kombat story on the channel (which I actually think you totally should), then you'd best be served by playing 3 of the games' story modes and watching the cutscenes to them (or just reacting to youtube videos of these cutscenes alone, as they definitely exist). Those three games are Mortal Kombat 9 (officially known as "Mortal Kombat", a reboot from 2011), Mortal Kombat X (the X in this case being for roman numeral 10), and Mortal Kombat 11, which are all cinematic experiences with fights scattered inbetween the cutscenes. Mortal Kombat 9 in particular is a very LONG game, as its a complete retelling of the lore and stories behind Mortal Kombat 1, 2, and 3 all shoved into one game. In fact, you'll be surprised how much of it lines up with this very same movie.

I know it's probably been said, but Christopher Lambert is most known for the cult classic Highlander movies (although the less said about Highlander 2 the better). Edit: There is a sequel to this, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. It's an absolute train wreck of a movie, not least because they recast Rayden (James Remar took the role, good actor but no Christopher Lambert). And yes the entire soundtrack for this movie is just one banger after another.

Highlander is such a great movie with Christopher Lambert as well

I must have missed the end bit because I'm now seeing the end credits after getting into the comment replies. The lead guitar in the end credits with the steam pipe orchestra hit sounds is Buckethead, a legendary guitarist.

Cameron Diaz was cast as Sonya Blade, but broke her wrist during filming and Brigette Wilson was cast. Jean Claude van Damme was considered to play Johnny Cage, but dropped out over a payment dispute

Mortal Kombat Annihilation is the next film after this one with the latest Mortal Kombat movie being a reboot I believe(not seen it myself), no Christopher Lambert as Raiden this time though, glad you enjoyed watching one of my favourite films as a kid and we all loved the soundtrack to it back then, it's just so good

The video games came first (some of then, seeing as there is now about a million of them already). I remember the day when me and my friend rode out bikes to the city center to purchase a VHS copy of this film. We were fans of the games and really excited. Unfortunately it was spring time in Finland and the roads were slippery. On our way back home, I slipped with my bike and I landed face first on the pavement. That turned into a little trip to the hospital for patching my face, but delayed me from watching the film.

It's very accurate to the game, a few minor changes like Chan isn't in the game Liu doesn't have a brother, and he's not the direct descendant to the Great Kung Lao that's actually Kung Lao another character who's in the 2021 remake MK. Fun fact Spielberg was supposed to make a cameo and wanted to but at the time was involved with another movie I believe out of the country if memory serves but yeah, that was a nod to him. Also fun fact, Johnny Cage is the movie actor, wiseass character who was created and inspired by Jean Claude Van-Damme since Midway(the developer at the time that made MK games) wanted him and wanted to make a Van Damme game, but he rejected the offer so they went on to make "Mortal Kombat" creating other characters that were original as well as inspired by other pop cult kung fu flicks and sci fi like Kano's design was Terminator, Raiden was from Big Trouble little china as far as design but powers way more powerful than the Storms, and mythology wise based off of Japanese Mythology which Raiden is The God of Thunder and Lightning, spelled Raijin. So they recreated the spelling. Liu Kang was inspired by Bruce Lee in a lot of films then you have original, unique characters like Scorpion and Sub-Zero arguably the most popular characters in MK mythos by fans. Yes the music is the best too! To this day the MK song has been remixed and still popular, it's been used even in the video game trailers as well as remixed in the 2021 reboot! 😎😎 I love how into it you get. Awesome reaction and vid!! 😊👍 There's also a sequel MK Annihilation(however done by different people and only the actors who played Liu Kang and Kitana came back, wasn't nearly as good as this one. The 2021 reboot which is fun but gory and MK Legacy a good series, MK Conquest cheesy but fun and 3 animated movies MK Legends Series. There was also 90's cartoon series called Defenders of the Realm, they're all on HBO Max except for Defenders of the Realm.

You have to check out some Mortal Kombat 11 videos on youtube, they got Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa back to play Shang Tsung again, as well as the movie Johnny / Sonya / Raiden (real voice actors). If you like RoboCop - he is also in MK11 (yes, voiced by Peter Weller too :P). MK95 is a wild movie, the effects are such a wildly mixed bag its hard not to be charmed, from the awful CG Reptile to the fantastic practical Goro. Such a fun, and massively quoteable, movie :D

Alot of people would say part 2 annihilation is garbage, but it actually has very good fight scenes. And it goes with the story plot of the video game.
