Written as only one season initially, based on her one woman stage show, then she wrote season 2 and deliberately ended it at that point.

Here are some things that make me sob about this last episode Clare falling in love with Klare being symbolism for her loving herself again and choosing herself for once. Clare and Fleabag's relationship getting so much better to the point Clare even says how important Fleabag is. Fleabag growing so much that she doesn't need us anymore, we were her shield and coping mechanism. We were symbolic of her checking out of situations in her life to cope and now she is better. Fleabag and the Priest could never have been together, they carry so many issues from the past that have affected them in the present day. If they had never been through those experiences though then they would never have fallen in love in the first place.

OK, now that you two have watched the entire thing, here is some clarification: - Fleabag was created first as a one woman theatre play. - It ran in the UK, and it was a massive success even though it was just Phoebe Waller-Bridge on a blank stage alone talking to the audience the entire time. - Phoebe was pitched the idea of turning the play into a TV series and expand Flebag's story. - It was very much set in stone from the start that there would be just one season, but, again, it was received with so much praise Phoebe and the series won several major awards. - Phoebe agreed to do a second season but said that was it, no more Flebag after that. - She said in an interview the only reason she agreed to do a second season was because she never said a proper goodbye to the viewer (the 4th wall) and so that door was open. - Sian Clifford (Claire) is Phoebe Waller-Bridge's best friend from R.A.D.A (Royal Academy Of Dramatic Art). Oh, and I would recommend watching the play if you can find it, it is very very very good as well.

Season 1 was based on Phoebe's one-woman show, I went to a showing of it at a local cinema after season 2 aired. The production was her sitting on a stool basically recounting the events of season 1 (the tv show adds plenty of scenes, but the stage play has a full character that's omitted from the tv version -an elderly regular at the cafe she bonds with) Season 2 was written for tv as a follow-up to the first, and is the intended end to the story, as far as we know. I hope so, it's a perfect close.

We, as the audience, became the surrogate for all the love fleabag was giving Boo- who told Fleabag to give all the love she had for her mom to her… She felt she needed us to get through a difficult time, but at the end she decides to look somewhere else. I feel like we as the audience were a kind of coping strategy for her, that she graduates from at the end of this series.
@tastyneck
@tastyneck 20 күн бұрын
We absolutely were a coping mechanism. An escape from reality. A way to disassociate from her problems and feelings, as we could only see and hear and couldn't complicate her life. An silent partner as an outlet. The hot priest, outside of her mother and boo, was the only other person she could connect with as a two way street. He SAW her, like we saw her, which is why he could see her escaping to us. Such a great show.
@patballarat
@patballarat 20 күн бұрын
I love the connection between these two lines in this episode: "I think you know how to love better than any of us. That's why you find it all so painful" and "love isn't something that weak people do. Being a romantic takes a hell of a lot of hope." I feel like throughout this show Fleabag struggles with this image that she's weaker than those around her because she's so deeply affected by things (loss of her mother, best friend's suicide). Those around her constantly push this narrative on her as well, and it seems like she gets lost in it, but these two quotes really do such a beautiful job of reframing this. It isn't weak at all to love deeply and feel pain when it ends. I think that's why her relationship with hot priest is so especially powerful--a part of her knows from the beginning that it won't last, but she still chooses to lean into it. I don't think this is self-sabotage, so much as acknowledging that love is fleeting and heartbreaking and temporal but even after all of that it's still worth it. What a damn show ugh!!!!! I love it

I read somewhere that the Fox is Hot Priest version of breaking the fourth wall and like the Hot Priest seeing fleabag breaking the 4th wall, only Fleabag has gotten to know Hot Priest intimately and deeply enough to see the fox and validate that his fears are real. In the end while Fleabag has left us behind and is in the process of healing herself, hot priest still has his struggles(what ever it is the fox is representing) that he needs to get through.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a massive talent. Between the Fleabag stage show and season one she did a marvelous series called Crashing. It's only six episodes long so not too much of a commitment. It's really funny and as with all her work even secondary characters get moments to shine. By all accounts she's exceptionally generous as both a writer and performer. No hogging the big scenes for herself. I've seen a few Killing Eve recommendations and I wholeheartedly agree with this proviso: she was only the show runner for season 1. Momentum and a marvelous cast carried it through season 2 but seasons 3 & 4 were hit and miss at best and its ending was right up (or down) there with Lost. Whatever you choose, love your reactions so hope you end up with a show you like.

Definitely not cancelled. There is a long standing tradition of six episode seasons and limiting to no more than a couple of seasons. A number of writers point to Fawlty Towers (1975) as the blueprint for this, it regarded as having set the standard for great and precise writing, but still leaving while the audience wants more. The contract can be seen in The Office, in the UK it was 2 seasons of 6 episodes each, followed by a later Christmas episode. Compared to the US version, which copied everything from those seasons and then went on for seven more, with over twenty episodes per season. Quality tv shows in the UK are written in the opposite way from the US. A writer will generally present a show that has a beginning, middle and end. In the US, a writer will present a concept with virtually no direction and the studio hopes that the audience likes the characters, so they can run the show into the ground before abandoning it. To maintain the longevity and fill schedules, US shows have teams of writers and will continue long after the shows creators have left. It makes shows tedious, disjointed and aimless. And that’s why shows end up - literally jumping the shark. There are a number of six episode, limited season comedies that the UK has turned out, among them are Detectorists, Mum and Carshare. All of which are brilliant for being high concept, or especially eventful, but are absolutely beautifully written. In Mum, it is only in the final series that characters leave the house, in Carshare, only a very few scenes are shot outside the car. By placing these limits on themselves, the writers are forced to realise, write characters and dialogue that can do it all. In a U.S. comedy show they tend to write for the lowest common denominator. If they want to reveal a character as heroic, or compassionate or mean, they will write a whole episode where a bizarre set of circumstances- and often a different location are used to set up the character for the reveal. In a quality UK comedy/drama, a character might reveal themselves with a single sentence, or with a pause. If you do watch any of those series I mentioned and you should, you can see the skill in the writing when characters reveal themselves. In each of those shows there are characters who seem harsh or stupid, but are revealed to be something we didn’t realize - sometimes to the extent that the viewer feels guilty for having misjudged them.

Bittersweet ending, but I do have to say, I was THRILLED for Claire (and Klare, lol). When she got on her knees and said "PLEASE leave me"(HAAAAAAA, take that, Martin!) and then later took off to the airport, I practically cheered. I was so happy for her to finally have some genuine joy in her life. Likewise for Fleabag -- it really really hurts when the Priest chooses his calling, but I love the ending where she essentially says goodbye to us and lets us know that she'll be alright. She doesn't need us anymore. She's finally ready to move forward with her life. Phoebe is a brilliant writer and actress and I really want to see more and more of her work. I hope she gets to do another amazing show very soon.
