the long piece is 7 units long. because 7 has no gaussian factors, it can't be placed diagonally in the grid, no need to make an assumption there. what's your favorite puzzle that subverts expectations and assumptions?

I don't know about Gaussian factors, but I'll have to learn about it! That would have been very helpful with this puzzle. Any resources that you know of that are a good introduction? My favorite puzzle that subverts expectations is "Dancing Shoes", which is one of the first puzzles I ever covered here. I still think it's one of the best puzzles I've ever seen! A close second would be "Blue Steel", which came on a floppy disk and was the first MIT Mystery Hunt Puzzle I ever solved! It's hard to solve the puzzle as it was first presented, but you can get a good sense of it here: web.mit.edu/puzzle/www/2006/puzzles/washington/blue_steel/

Somehow when I hear you starting the name "Jean Claude Constantin" I immediatelly finish the name with you and wait for an amazing puzzle :-) I like this one. My niece had the kids puzzle games with penguins on the icebergs, where you had 4 or 5 different pieces of puzzles (some of the pieces were even movable) and you had to fit them into the slots just like the guiding book showed you. The further in the book you went, the harder the game was. At the start it showed you how exactly put the pieces, at the end it showed you only the positions of the little penguins on the top of the puzzle and you had to figure out how to make the puzzle.

If a similar puzzle used a 3-4-5 triangle, you might hide a diagonal somewhere and add some complexity. Depending on how the corners were rounded perhaps. Carpenters regularly use a 3-4-5 triangle for squaring corners btw. It and its multiples are one of the few triangles that form a right triangle.

"if we assume all pieces go horizontally or vertically" While probably impossible, I now wonder if there's a way to fit it in diagonally...

Evidently there's some mathematical reason why it wouldn't work? Prezombie commented about it in another comment.
@pokestep
@pokestep 7 жыл бұрын
FLEB I read that comment and it's not really a proof! It just means that blocks lengths 6 or 7 cannot be placed diagonally. In fact, it seems that only the one with length 5 could be set diagonally. I don't assume it makes the puzzle impossible, but it won't allow the rest of the puzzle to be placed nicely.
@FLEBpuzzles

Right, now that I understand it, it seems that the 5 could be placed diagonally.

If the official solution left holes vacant or had diagonal placements that didn't interlock as nicely as it clearly has here... it wouldn't have been such a nice puzzle. Id feel it was either incomplete or poorly designed.
@FLEBpuzzles

It depends. You could put other moves in, such as making the 5 length piece a diagonal. It could be nice in other ways! I definitely assumed it would fill every hole though, purely because I trust the designer to make a nice puzzle!
