That was one of the last tracks recorded by Peter Green as a member of Fleetwood Mac. He is said to have had a very bad acid trip while on a European tour, and was never the same again. The other guitarists, Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan left in succession in the following couple of years, in slightly odd circumstances (one joined a religious cult, the other became an alcoholic and was fired). If you go back further chronologically you will find the music is very blues driven. Their other well known tracks from that era are "Oh Well", "Man of the World", "Black Magic Woman" & "Albatross". It's nice to see you listen to something you've never heard before. I could have told you that you'd be surprised at how different the early stuff was. Basically they were a totally different band. Mick Fleetwood & John & Christine McVie went over to America, hooked up with Stevie Nicks & Lyndsey Buckingham and re-invented the band after going through a tricky lawsuit to get the name "Fleetwood Mac" back in their ownership.

This was one of the last songs that Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green wrote for the band. It came at a time when he was taking LSD and having violent nightmares. As Green explained in a 1996 interview.... the song is about the evils of money: the Green Manalishi was the devil manifested as a wad of cash.
@douglennon9133 Жыл бұрын
My favourite Fleetwood Mac song & I have often wondered with that line up (without the acid) what an even more brilliant band they could have become. Peter Green's first solo album End Of The Game is well worth listening to.

Peter was incredible he was loved and lauded by his peers and us young fans. Full of feeling. Imagination.The industry damaged him I think on purpose. My young boyfriend called me his Green Manalishi because I thought until now I wore green jeans but looking at the lyrics well we were very obsessed by each other!
@johnkochen72648 ай бұрын
In his acid induced psychosis, Peter Green had a hard time accepting that he was making a fair amount of money. At one point he wanted yo give it all away. The Green Manalishi in this song is money, the love of money that tries to rule people’s lives and his struggles with it. This song is so dark for a reason.

Just to say that when I was still 16, 17 in the July, in 1970 when I saw Fleetwood Mac at the Redcar Jazz Club, probably on the last tour before Peter Green left the group. Older friends of mine had seen them there a couple of times and said how good they were, and I had also read that their albums never matched their live performances. Anyway I have to say they gave an amazing performance and became the benchmark by how I judged future acts. The Green Manalishi hadn’t been released at that time, but I did hear it being played on a sound system behind the bar, and suspected it was them; hard to distinguish with all the noise of people talking etc before they came on stage. I was so disappointed when Peter Green left as they seemed to be getting better and better. I count myself very lucky to have been able to see them at that stage. RIP Peter & Danny.

All of the Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac albums are worth listening to, they were one of the best bands around at the time, outselling both the Beatles and the Stones between '68 and '70. Green was actually the founder of the band, and he chose the name for his rhythm section, drummer Mick Fleetwood, and bassist John McVie, who would be the only original members of the band to stay right to the end.

From the sixties and seventies, a time when music was art, musicians really were musicians (Monkees excepted) and singers had to be able to sing (no autotune etc).

Love what are known as Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. Peter started the group and did most of the singing and lead guitar but it would be unfair not to acknowledge the contributions from Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan. They were mostly a blues band nothing like the later Fleetwood Mac who were middle of the road and of little interest to me. They were such a great group with hits like Albatross, Man of the World, Oh Well, Black Magic Woman, etc. beside traditional blues tracks. To get a better idea of their history you really need to search the web as there is so much written about them. Unfortunately Peter was always mentally fragile (after all who would name his group after two of the least important members instead of himself) and he was badly effected by drug abuse. He ended up in a mental institute for years but later made a comeback with The Splinter Group. I could go on and on about Peter because he was such an important figure in the early days and such a sweet guy.

There are another two beautiful songs from the Peter Green's era of Fleetwood Mac: "Jumping At Shadows" (there is a live version from Boston that contains the best guitar solo ever) and "Man Of The World". It would be a pitty not to hear them in one's life.
@NoviJimB Жыл бұрын
I totally agree about 'Jumping At Shadows' and the solo. Just fantastic. One of my all-time favorite guitar solos, period. And 'Man Of The World' is a VERY underappreciated song. A haunting song. I love how it picks up some in the middle, then goes back to that slower, sadder mood. What a shame Peter left the band soon after all that, he was just getting better and better. He and Danny were great together.

Enjoyed your video. Peter was one of the very best guitarists of his generation. If he had not suffered from schizophrenia early on, he may very well be remembered today as one of the greatest musicians of his era. This song, among several others is an example of his unique talent that was sadly cut short.

To a lot of music critics, this song was famously both the apex and end of the psychedelic era. Just this ominous and threatening song which is forever tied to the tragedy of Peter Green. While there’s a lot of mythology around Green and the “bad acid” story, he was actually presenting with schizophrenia around this time, which eventually became pretty disabling and led to him becoming a recluse in his 20’s. There’s actually a great 90’s movie which directly riffs on the Peter Green story called “Strange Fruit” which stars Stephen Rea and Bill Nighy reuniting a 60’s British band who’s star guitarist disappeared

He turned out of his mind after a LSD trip at a mansion outside Munich. As he told, he could not play guitar after that. As he said, the tune was about a big grousom dog chasing him. Sad ending of one of the best guitar players in history. Also a underrated one. As B. B King quoted. "He was the only guitar that gave me the cold sweats".

The original Fleetwood (Drummer Mick) mac (Bass player Jon McVie) was a Blues Band with the great guitarist and singer /songwriter Peter Green. Green's horrible story forced the Band to undergo several changes over the next 5 or so years, until Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks were discovered in Los Angles, playing small venues and Bars. The two founders, MIck Fleetwood and Jon McVie, were the two mainstays that remained as members throughout all of the changes over the years. I really liked the original Fleetwood Mac Blues Band version the best.

Christine McVie (née Christine Perfect) played with Fleetwood Mac from 1968 until 1998, and was responsible for several of their post-Peter Green hits, and IIRC sang lead vocals on several hits. Best Wishes. ☮

Peter Green was a genuine artist. Admired by Clapton et al early days. He was also very shy. I think he was used by the business in a nefarious way. All the tradgedy with band members from this era involves drugs. The only access to drugs was thro France or the USA. What are drugs without users. The young guitar based music world was crawling with pushers and groupies who were both paid at after show parties to get the bands high. Why? Well you’re more easily manipulated. And pushed around to perform and to lose track of your finances and genuine friends. Surrounded by yes men and women you are a pawn. Us kids were the kids of the war era wanting to escape the horror wanting peace. But the underworld evil was still around.

Green replaced Clapton in the John Mayall Bluesbreakers. The common graffiti of the time proclaimed, "Clapton is God!" He was the king of the guitar. Mayall was a bit surprised the band wanted Green but they told Mayall he was "better than Clapton." Outside of this original, the best cover of this song is by the bizarre singer Arthur Brown on a tribute album of Green's songs. It is hard to find but it is well worth it. Brown vocals are much stronger and his band kicks the drive of the song into high gear. It is a crank up the volume cover. To me, Green's most passionate guitar work is the Fleetwood Mac cover of the B.B. King song I've Got A Mind To Give Up Living, performed during the opening weekend of the Warehouse in New Orleans on January 31, 1970. The video is on KZfaq. Just search for that song with that venue and date. That was a legendary weekend where musical history was made, including the Grateful Dead being "busted down in New Orleans." You can also hear the complete concert recordings in the Radio section of the Warehouse tribute page at www.blackstrat.net
