Lindsay Buckingham is one of the most underrated guitarists in Rock history. This is one of the most perfect albums you will ever listen to, Very much a group effort, not just Buckingham and Nicks, it was all about how all of the bands inter-relationships were disintegrating. Buckingham couldn't get this song right and was really struggling - Stevie went away for half an hour and came back with Lyric changes that helped make it work. Christie, Mick & John all did a lot of improv and John's epic Bass solo brought everything together. It's the only song where all 5 get a songwriting credit on the same track which is why you can hear a lot of the improv and different things going on because it's five minds at work rather than one or two. That whole album is magnificent but this is the sone that truly brought the album together thematically because even though their relationships were totally dysfunctional at the time when you got the five of them in a room together they could still bring it together in a way few bands ever do.
@jaydefelice9887

I just copied the background part from the wikipedia page. I've heard it this way elsewhere as well. "According to interviews on the writing of , the final section of "The Chain"-beginning with a bass progression-was created by John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. Stevie Nicks had written the lyrics separately and thought they would be a good match; she and Christine McVie did some reworking to create the first section of the tune. Other elements were worked in from an early project of Christine's called "Keep Me There", which removed the blues-style motif, but retained the chord progression. To complete the song, Buckingham recycled the intro from an earlier song from a duet with Nicks, "Lola (My Love)", originally released on their self-titled 1973 album, which was attached manually using a razor blade to cut and splice the tapes.
@jaydefelice9887
@jaydefelice9887 3 жыл бұрын
The part where it says Nicks wrote the lyrics separately is true but makes it sound as if written for this particular track. That is not 100% correct as she already had written and recorded a demo, which this more famous version borrows the chorus from. Here's a link... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j5OPlaqA3uC5Ymg.html

Stevie Nicks doesn't know this but she was my vocal coach from the time I was twelve or thirteen years old until I was about 16. Thanks to her I ended up in show choirs and a lead part in an adult musical when I was 16 years old.. this song is absolutely amazing and it's my favorite on the entire album even though dreams was the most popular. I'm a musician as well and the vocals blending with the musicianship is absolutely incredible and surpasses many of the other songs on the album that were more popular than this. Gold Dust Woman is another really good song but it's got a slower beat than this but beautiful nonetheless with Stevie singing.

Fleetwood Mac started in 1967 in England as a blues band featuring the only constant members John McVie on bass (Mac) and Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood) on drums. They were originally led by singer guitarists Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer. Both would have breakdowns and quit. They went through a lot of guitarists. Christine Perfect played piano on a few songs in the early years before getting married and joining the band as Christine McVie. She started writing and singing her own songs. In 1974 while looking at Sound City Studios, their future producer sold Mick Fleetwood on the studio by playing him the Buckingham Nicks debut album they recently recorded there. Then their most recent guitarist quit. Mick was told about Lyndsey. The band did not want Stevie, but he wouldn't join without her. Her first song with the band, Rhiannon, hit # in 1975, so they kept her. By the time they started recording Rumours in 1977, Lyndsey and Stevie broke up, John and Christine got divorced and Mick was separated from his wife, and had an affair with Stevie. Christine, Lyndsey and Stevie all sing lead on multiple songs. So they have three front people and the band is named after the other two. The entire album is perfection, and many songs deal with those break ups. My favorite, Gold Dust Woman was about her cocaine addiction which she didn't kick for another decade. Their drug dealer got thanked in the liner notes. Rumours is one of the biggest selling albums of all time at over 40 million copies worldwide, slightly more than the entire population of California. Lyndsey was so good of a guitarist, his time in the band was the only time they went with only one guitarist (they had three for a bit) for longer than one album. He was replaced by two again.

This band is phenomenal! All of the members of the band were in relationships that were breaking up during the making of this album. The Chain is actually referring to the band but with innuendo to Stevie and Lindsey as a couple. Lindsey is a musical genius as he does all or most of the arranging on all of the songs and he plays all of the guitars- fingerpicking on some which is amazing as well as vocals. Every song ever made by this band is great.If you're not crazy about one, if you listen to it a few times it will get in your head and you will love it too!! Like someone said in a previous comment, their music is timeless. It sounds as good today as it did in the 70s and it still fits in! Even though they have some soft love songs, this band can rock out and the variety of their songs and the arrangements and lyrics and the band itself is just enthralling to me- how many bands can make a great rock song bringing in the USC Marching Band?? I loved them in '79 at 18 and I've rediscovered and love them now at 59! They need to get Lindsey back and go on forever!!!❤❤❤❤❤

Knowing the song so well, it was a pleasure watching your reaction as the song as it grew and climbed to its climax. You hit the nail on the head as it's their story - their relationship falling apart but the chain of the group keeping them together. There was another couple in the group who also split. This album (Rumours) is flawless from beginning to end. The two couples within the band were in the midst breaking apart personally (Christine & John McVie and Stevie & Lindsay), yet kept "the chain" together to create this masterpiece. At times, the band members were only "speaking" to each other through the lyrics of their songs. The band has included 18 different musicians from 1967-present, though this is considered their most famous. These particular 5 members only created 5 studio albums together and a couple "live" ones. From this version of the band, consider reactions to: Landslide, Say You Love Me, I'm so Afraid (live versions blow the studio track out of the water), Second Hand News, You Make Loving Fun, Gold Dust Woman, Dreams, Go Your Own Way, Tusk, Sisters of the Moon, Big Love (live versions feature Lindsay solo - must see!), LittleLies, and the other essential viewing is definitely the 1997 Live version of Silver Springs, a "B-side" from the Rumours album that was resurrected for the Dance album and tour. This one you must watch-- the stares between Lindsay and Steve as they sing to each other are just chilling. There's so much pain and anguish being said but not said through the performance. Fleetwood Mac and Madonna are two of my favorites, so I'm loving your reactions and so glad to find your channel.

When someone says their relationship status is "complicated," but they're not smiling when they say it, this is what they're talking about. It perfectly captures that intersection of love and pain in a broken relationship. I think including it in "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" was a perfect choice. Because that's what's going on at the heart of that movie -- the characters struggling with broken relationships. It really brought home those feelings.

What I love about this band is the fact that they make you sit down a listen to the details in the song you’re listening to and you feel almost haunted or extremely interested, it’s just crazy. But Lindsay and Stevie where discovered by mick (drummer). So the band consists of Christine (lead vocalist pianist, John (bass) mick (drums), Stevie (lead vocalist, tambourine I guess but she is known for dancing and being an awesome performer) and Lindsay (lead vocalist, guitarist)

I met Christine McVie many times when she was Christine Perfect playing in Chicken Shack before she joined the Mac. They were a superb blues band and I was in another(not quite so good!) band in the same area of the UK. We would often play the same venues. She is a lovely, lovely person.

I have been a Fleetwood mac since long before Nick's and Buckingham. Love Christine....the unsung hero of the group. Great writer and singer. She released an LP with Buckingham in 2017...checkout her song "Feel about you" . Nice to hear from her again.

Fleetwood Mac had 3 singers that sounded incredible together. You had Stevie Nicks singing soprano, Christie McVeigh had the alto, and Lindsay took care of the tenor/baritone. Absolutely beautiful.

Yes Rumors is their most iconic and famous album! I consider it the breakup album! Christine and John were getting divorced, Stevie and Lindsey were breaking up, Mick was having a divorce outside of the band! There was fights, affairs, and drugs! These songs are their own way of saying goodbye to their significant but not breaking the chain (not breaking up the band)! Stevie had Dreams, Lindsey had Go Your Own Way and Second Hand News, Christine had Oh Daddy and Songbird, but most importantly the band had The Chain!

The love and hate between all of them created the passion. And it lead to them just pouring out feelings and emotion. That feeling and emotion let to incredibly deep lyrics and instrumentals.

That cry is The amazing Christine McVie singing backing vocals and playing the keyboards. Christine is the third lead singer in the band. She has written and sung many hits for them too. John McVie is the bass player.

At high school in south Beach, beach hi, we had rock ensemble, i did back up and tambourine, on this song..cowbell on goldust woman. We had Fleetwood Mac our year. Loved the bass at the bridge. Amazing experience. We watched concert footage of them. The cry is Christine McVeigh. I did most her song. I know do many Fleetwood Mac now...so fun for the ears this song. If you like bass, do Oh Daddy. Christine does that one. I think this song is during their break up.

Lindsey is playing multiple guitar lines at the same time as well as singing. He plays two to three separate guitar lines at once. While also singing. He's extraordinary. I've seen bands do covers of this with four different people doing just his parts.

This line up of Fleetwood Mac had 3 singer / songwriters. Stevie Nicks, Lindsey Buckingham (also Guitars) and Christine McVie (also Keyboards) with Mick Fleetwood (Drums) and John McVie (Bass). All 5 members have writing credits on this track. Without knowing their history, your analysis is scarily accurate. Buckingham Nicks were a duo prior to joining Fleetwood Mac. The McVie's were divorcing, Buckingham and Nicks were separating and Mick Fleetwood's marriage was also breaking down. Fleetwood Mac's history is as messy as it is turbulent. It's an ongoing soap opera that continues to play out as I write this comment.

Every member of that band is a genius musician and songwriter, and they were all emotionally entangled. It's a miracle they channeled it into Rumors. One of the greatest bands of all time.
