We use IP66 flexible conduit from Flexicon to see if we can speed up the installation of Easee EV chargers fitted to the flat cable system we featured in a previous video.
We think it could be a great solution allowing electricians to wire the EV charger off-site using flexible conduit and tri-rated cable.
What do you think?
Flexicon conduit is available in a wide range of sizes, with IP ratings from IP66 to IP68 and IP69. Materials to suit demanding environments UV resistance, self-extinguishing and low fume toxicity.
In the US - Flexible conduit is also known as Smurf Tube!

It's really handy domestically for garages. Often with 'rickety old garages', the building's not straight enough for normal conduit work to look neat. If there's angle iron, you can strap it inside the angle with metal ties, and hide most of the run.

@@efixx can't wait! Flexicon turned out to be really handy for a small job the other day... simple outside socket, but we didn't want to export the PME earth, so we drove a rod. But the size of the breaker only required 2.5mm earth rather than 10mm (which'd be hard to get into a socket anyway!). Flexicon from the earth rod 'pod' to the socket made a nice neat job of it. (to comply with the mechanical protection requirements on such a small earth conductor)

I can see it's a well made product, and has its uses. I personally hate the stuff, but I work in harsh, high impact environments where plastic has no place. The only stuff I will use is short lengths of galvanised, plastic coated kopex with swivel glands connected to vibrating loads, like vibrating screen motors etc. As I say, it has its place, this in particular seems like a well designed system, but it would find itself anywhere near me!
@FlexiconUk
@FlexiconUk 3 жыл бұрын
These are interesting topics & we often see that metallic conduits are considered superior to plastic but this is not always true depending on the applciation. Impact: Typically metallic conduits will stand a higher impact load but the conduit will retain the deformation, this can lead to chaffing on the cables inside. Nylon conduits will recover and bounce back so the long term performance can be better. Harsh environments: Typically metallic conduits are coated with a PVC jacket, this has good flexibility but it’s long term fatigue performance is far inferior to nylon conduits and has a smaller temperature range. In dynamic applications PA12 conduits offer excellent long term fatigue resistance and they can handle very low temperatures. We would be more than happy to look at your applications in more detail to see if we think there may be opportunities to improve the installation time & long term performance.

IP69K is described as “Powerful high-temperature water jets”, typically this is used to represent wash down applications using hot. It is similar to the IP66 test with a higher pressure and temperature.

What's the benefits over armoured cable?
@FlexiconUk
@FlexiconUk 3 жыл бұрын
There are a fair few benefits of flexible conduit compared to armoured cable: it is easier to cut, you can combine multiple cable types in one system, can make quick changes / upgrades to circuits within existing system, easy routing of cables with different bend radius, can replace faulty cables without replacing entire system, suitable for static and dynamic applications, can be retrofitted, mechanical protection provided by the conduit, easier termination of glands.

An interesting fact: rodents do not like Nylon as they don’t seem to like the ‘taste’ or have a desire to attack it when compared to a PVC product, so tend to leave it alone. We have a case study on Cockatoos in Australia and their inability to grip the nylon conduit with their teeth due to the slippery surface, this would also be very similar for rodents.

Most EV chargers and sockets are made from plastics and the impact ratings are acceptable for their application. Flexicon’s products comply with the BS EN 61386 conduit standard which is referred to by the UK wiring regulations BS7671. FPAH21 (heavy duty nylon corrugated) can withstand an impact of > 6J at -25°C which is far greater than something like a rigid PVC conduit. One of the other advantages of nylon corrugated conduits is its ability to recover from impact compared with metallic conduits that generally stay deformed.

@FlexiconUk
@FlexiconUk 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeffrey, - Black tape is very thin & the UV performance is very poor, it would be a very short term repair. The typical compression strength of Flexicon Nylon conduit is 75kg/100mm, the corrugated conduit offers a much higher impact resistance compared to black tape.
