This car has such an emtional place in my heart. My late grandfather got one like this in the 80s, he always took care of it and it was his pet. He lived in Yugoslavia and after the war in the 90s my grandpa developed clinical depression, he stoped driving his car, he didn't even get out of the house. I remember this car as a kid, parked in front of granpa's house for years, my family didn't have a heart to sell it, so it just stood there. As my grandpa's health was deteriorating so was his car outside. The day he died I remember looking at the car all abandoned, seeing how it reflected my grandfathers health troughout the years. Whenever I see this Mercedes I am always reminded of him, and seeing a video of it being revived tears me up. Thank you for this video.

@@Schlaubischlumpf66 No, after it was outside for so long it was worn out and rusty, and after my grandpa's death one of my uncle's sold it for some small price. I don't even think it was driveable. I was only 13 at the time, so sometimes I wish i was older, I would probably take it myself and try to fix it or even restore it.

Moj otac je vozio nekoliko 123 ki, ja dobro pamtim 240D i bas ovakvog paljenja posle dugo stajanja kada je ostao parkiran krajem 90 ih godina zbog lose situacije i manjka novca za registraciju i gorivo.. upalio je tada kao tenk uz neki nadrealan zvuk jer je auspuh otpao. Ovaj video me vraca u to vreme, i sad osetim miris tog Mercedesa kad gledam ovo. Hvala!

Exactly and I think I This is one of the first generation of the 3 litre diesels Mercedes Benz put out. Didn't sound like it had a turbo.

Just bought an old mercedes van with a 5 cylinder diesel. It hadn’t been started since january, was stored for 2 years prior to that, barely used since 1998 and only driven 64 000 km. The battery was completely dead. Jumpstarted it and it fired up after 1 second. Brought it home and now I drive it daily on vegetable oil 🤩 Sadly I have nosy neighbors who complain about it being parked at the road outside the house. Time to find somewhere else to live… I have one video of it on my channel, not sure if I should post more videos about it.

@@matze3569 no, it smells much better than diesel. I used to drive a suzuki on the same stuff, it has a cat and a heat exchanger and the exhaust smelled only when cold, when really warm after a long trip I couldn’t smell the exhaust at all and there wasn’t a single puff of visible smoke even when flooring the pedal at a standstill

Valve clearance job is a must on this engine - there were an intake pops while cranking - one of the cylinders must have overtightened intake valve.

I think there might be rust where the valve contacts the valve seat it will eventually get better

My grandpa had two of these back in Yugoslavia. He bought a yellow 200d and in 1981 he drove 113.000 kilometers with it. Bought with 25.000 and sold with 300.000 kilometers. Never had problems with them.

@@Deltafox295 есть ценители например в Катаре. Там щас трудится для них дотошный педант из Тюмени. Канал есть на юбубах. Мне так лишь бы тарахтел не дорого и не гнил особо. А есть ролучающие кайф от заводской покраски, есть получающие кайф от блеска реставрированных экземпляров, есть прущщиеся от ржавых монстров. Меня прёт от атмосферных дизелей старой школы двигателестроения до 1990 годов включительно.

I was preparing to go work then I saw your video, I called in sick. Very great content by the way! I don't know about eco-friendly and electric, but I'm a proud w123 200D owner and I will drive old diesels till the day I die. Just listen to that synchronized diesel knocking .. What a joy! Keep starting those old things and bringing them back to life. I started mine after 25 years also.

У моего дедушки был почти точно такой же, только темно-синий, а в остальном: 200d, такие же колеса и люк в крыше, как на видео, даже эти аляповатые чехлы и приборы! На таком впервые сел за руль очень давно! Только теплые воспоминания, так и слышу это тарахтение дизеля.

Эта модель одна из последних у Мерседеса которую можно назвать автомобилем. При сравнительно небольших тратах он превращается в вечный авто с пробегами в несколько миллионов километров. Когда я в Калининграде первый раз сел в такси 123 кузова я подумал: ничего себе какой высокий пружинные диван и креслами германцы поставили в салон... Это любовь с первого взгляда. А потом доверчивых инженеров съели алчные маркетологи. Это был грех.

20:55 дизайн опередивший время лет на 40. Феноменальный ресурс чуть не погубивший производителя. Теперь то понятно почему они пошли на обман с неэкологичностью этих авто. Он бы так и ездил со смешными расходами с 1979 до 2045года. Авто от 1930-х и до 1990-х выпускались надёжными и простыми.

@@Valeriy_Kimov понимаете Валера: для кого то запах солярки неприятен, кто то считает что долбиться в зад норма. Человеки такие разные. Мне нравится тарахтение старого дизельного двигателя, его надёжность. Кому то нравится мягкость бензинового и постоянная покупка запчастей и топлива на него сравнимая с оплатой ипотеки... Лох как говорится ...он не мамонт он не вымрет.

Beauty, elegance, timeless appearance of an elegant, comfortable car with soul. This is how many years a car can run after leaving the factory and this is how long it will experience in its life. It's amazing how much attention was paid to designing the entire car to serve people. Considering its age, the sheet metal is in really good condition. Same with varnish. Someone had to take care of this car a bit, though. The engine is durable and starts and drives after many years. Now such cars, after tuning and sometimes lowered, cost a lot of money in Poland. In good condition - PLN 60,000, very good - PLN 80,000 or more, and tuned ones up to PLN 120,000 or PLN 150,000. There will be no more cars like this. Thank you for the video :)

That series of engines is the best ones that Mercedes-Benz has put out. The requirement of only synthetic oils is why that still started up so easily despite nine years sitting inactive.😊

I remember spending my adolescent weekends washing and polishing my dad’s 1981 white 300d. It took me an age because of the size of the thing; the heavy steel wheel caps with their chrome surround had to sparkle, and so did that long engine tappet cover. I had to buff the crap out of that thing. Only years and years later, did I realise that I was given the privilege of “working” on the best car in the world.

Habt ihr mal wieder gut hinbekommen Jungs, er läuft. Für mich ist die Baureihe W 123 der Beste Mercedes. Vor Jahren habe ich einmal einen W 123 240D restauriert. Ich war doch etwas erstaunt, wieviel Rost und Gammel zum Vorschein gekommen ist. Einmal durchgebraten und das technische komplett überholt, der Karren läuft noch heute. Das sind ehrliche Diesel, nicht das Geklimper von den heutigen Dieselfahrzeugen.

It's just amazing how noisy it is. When you get the hood up and you're in front of it inside. It's as quiet as I'm almost as a church from else. 22:38 кузов конечно не 126-й но вполне гармоничные пропорции и приятные выверенные простые линии. Солидно и одновременно гениально просто. Эти сочетания могут добиться только лучшие. Именно за это люьят Мерседесы тех времён. Мерседес заявил всем: а Вы повторите наш успех. И никто не смог в течении лет 30 наверное.

Brings a smile to the face! I have a 1977 model, identical to yours except it's automatic, and they are great cars. Built by Engineers, not accountants. It even appears the rear SLS is working?!

Finest car with best diesel ever made. Mine's an 83 300TD. I'd never sell it. My mechanic couldn't believe he could overhaul the power steering pump! Don't forget to pull the drain plug on the steering box to drain the steering and Mann has new filter inside the reservoir, PS should be serviced every 30K miles to last forever...
