Most Metal bands had nearly 100% male fan base. Motley Crue was the first Metal band that started with a mostly female fan base.

Nice that you are going back to the earlier Motley Crue. I like their Too Fast for Love and Shout at the Devil albums. Watching this video is like watching a B movie, if that, lol. When I was in school it was typically the 90/80/70/60 scale for min A, B, C, D but some where as tough as a 94/88/82/76 scale.

Loved it!!! I was 12 years old in '83 and absolutely fell head over heels in love with this album and the band. "Shout at the Devil" remains my favorite Crue album to this day, it's just so damn good from top to bottom, as you said Burch. I too had issues with t-shirts in school, namely a Stryper "To Hell With the Devil" - the principal called my Mom and asked that she bring me another t-shirt to wear the rest of the day! My Mom did as requested...such bullsh*t! lol - I too remember the grading system from those days: 90-100 = A; 80-89 = B; 70-79 = C; 60-69 = D; 59 and below = F. lol

Back in the day, I saw Crue play live numerous times. Back in Vince's early years, the dude sang pretty good. It wasn't the same as the album, but his voice was pretty kick ass. It's when the partying took over, he started getting sloppy with his voice. But he was always a cool dude and one hell of a front man. When Motley came to town, they always showed up and always put on one hell of a show.

The difference back then was if you wanted to see a particular video, you had to sit in front of MTV (or MuchMusic in Canada) and wait until one of the VJs decided to play it. There was no KZfaq and there was no internet. Not too many households even had VCRs yet (ask your parents.... I'm not explaining VCRs in this comment). Almost no one I knew ever got to see the first few seconds of this video because when one of us saw it, we'd start calling friends to tell them it's on. Those calls lasted all of 3 seconds each and most of us would start watching when it was already about 20 to 30 seconds in

I agree with Burch: Back in the early days of Crüe, Vince was a solid singer. Not the best, not technical. But distinctive. I think in one of his books, Nikki said he had a bit of a Robin Zander thing going, and I guess if you close your eyes, you can hear it a little bit. And it was good enough for what they were doing.

I'm in west Texas. Graduated in '83. Our school had no rules in attire like this. Then again, when this album was released, I had already graduated. So, I dunno. My mom was the one who freaked out when she saw this album in my collection. Parents were staunch Southern Baptists, and rock music was the devil's music. But I didn't care. I bought the cassettes of my favorite bands, and kept them in the 180 cassette case/holder in my car. The video...yeah, random. The look, yeah, goth and random. For some reason, that era of hard rock/metal/glam metal videos all seemed to have a "post apocalyptic" setting. This video didn't but other Crüe videos did... Looks That Kill, to be specific. Other bands did the same thing. Queensrÿche's video for Queen of the Ryche...100% cheesy if you watch it now... but absolutely awesome, at the time. But it was that same, post-apocalyptic, Mad Max Road Warrior meets Star Wars look. MAN, I loved the 80s!

Great album but, I still like Too Fast for Love better and sadly IMHO pretty much everything after except Dr. Feelgood didn't live up to my expectations. Neil wasn't a great voice or a great technician, but he was a great melody and emotion conveyor, he was a showman and a magnet, he had charisma and a feel for the dramatic rendering, which made him quite a frontman. Im 1983 Bach or Axl hadn't arrived yet and even Bon Jovi was just about to, so in this niche - Neil might have ruled for a few months

I was in Jr High when this came out. It was the 1st album I ever bought with my own money. I memorized the spoken intro to Shout At The Devil and used to get detentions for reciting it while walking into class for no reason. Big Crue fan from the beginning. Even their last studio album, Saints Of Los Angeles, was completely awesome. It's a damn shame what they've turned into now, letting AI do their writing and recording and playing completely to tracks. I mean, Vince always sounded like crap live but at least back in the day they were actually live.
