It’s not the turbulence alone that scares me and perhaps other people as well. I have watched enough ACI episodes to know that planes often crash in bad weather like this. Could be microburst, pilot disorientation, CFIT due to poor visibility and so on.

You'd like to think that you'd sit on that plane and be all chill but when all of a sudden it feels like you're on a roller coaster, yeah, I doubt you'd be so calm. This looks like mountain wave turbulence, which is caused by high winds blowing over mountain ranges like here. It causes winds to move like waves and when different patches of air collide, it creates unstable up and down motion. It basically straight up is like going through a choppy ocean with rough waves (except it’s in the form of air). Mountain wave turbulence is pretty legit and kinda scary, and can cause swaying/rocking on top of dips, although I’ve never seen or experienced any this bad.

@@shanewilson1765 Brother, when a plane reaches stall speed it rocks left to right with the ass down - this is an indication that the plane is going down if there is no recovery. During these initial stalls the feeling in the seat is very unnatural, unlike other phases of flight. Granted, the plane isn't stalling here but the feeling of extreme turbulence can be very similar if not way worse. These passengers are right to be startled. Nosediving isn't the only way a plane can fall from the sky.

It's never any fun to experience turbulence like this especially when you're flying over mountain ranges. This appears to be a Aerolineas Argentinas Boeing 737-800. The airplane is reacting to some rough air pockets as it flies through the air route. Most of the time, people would just not rather look outside, and put their window shades down until it all passes. But it's just hard for them to overcome their fears. The mountains of the Andes are large like the Alaskan mountain ranges in Alaska. The integrity of the airplane would make it withstand heavy turbulence like you see here. So pilots have to maintain a safe altitude even when turbulence is presumably present.

Knowledge is key for this situation. Not calling anyone dumb or anything like that. But if they only knew anything about turbulence and flying low over mountains, they would have 100% expected it to be every bit as bad as that was, perhaps not be as panicked. I get it. Crazy sensations of falling not to mention the unexpected steep banks. But just a little bit of knowledge of weather, terrain, and how it affects flight can go a long way. At the end of the day, it may still make their heart race. But like i said. Knowledge and expectations is key.
