Every October, the skies above Doyang reservoir in Nagaland darken with the arrival of tens of thousands of Amur Falcons.
The reservoir is a roosting and resting site for the raptors on their transoceanic migration, considered to be the largest congregation of raptors in the world.
A single falcon can travel as much as 29000 kilometres from their breeding sites in Manipur to South Africa and back again to Northeast India. A tremendous conservation success story, many locals in the villages around the reservoir are hunters turned ardent conservationists, with no hunting allowed during the migration. Even as the pandemic increased hunting pressure on animals elsewhere, the falcons of Nagaland have been welcomed back with joy and respect.
