Flight Review With A Twist - London to Malaga on British Airways in Business Class

After 333 days grounded I am finally back in the air with a review of my flight from London Heathrow Terminal 5 to Malaga airport in Spain. I travelled with British Airways, in business class, or Club Europe as the service is branded.
But - there was an unexpected twist in the form of my row-mate, who turned out to be a very interesting and very high ranking member of the British aristocracy. I won't reveal his identity, but if you watch to the end I'll narrow it down significantly!
I travelled to the airport by public transport and as a Gold Card holder I was able to use the First wing as Heathrow was quite busy...
I'll review the seat and the business class service and share some beautiful views from the window. I intended that this channel would heavily focus flight reviews, and as its been 10 months since I last uploaded one, I hope you all enjoy even if the cold still lingered when I recorded the voice over so I'm a little huskier than normal!!!

I wholeheartedly agree. Matt does great videos, and is very articulate. I think the KZfaq channel will grow over time. At the moment people are just getting back to travelling like they used to in 2019.

After watching your videos. Me and my husband decide to go with BA business class! Specially we took the early morning flight which the price is lots cheaper than late morning flights 😊 Thank you for the great video Matt!

Fantastic to see you back in the air again Matt. I downloaded this video to watch on my flight today to Perth (or fortress WA as it's now called) and almost spat out my lunch at the hot dog bit. Wasn't read for it ahahahah. Excellent content as always, thank you.

Good review. How tall are you, Matt? Always helpful to know that when we're subjected to kneecap shots. P.S. BA seems to be pushing a great many flights into the air at Heathrow.

Excellent question! I'm 6 foot 4 ish - 193 cm in new money. But I have a relatively long body and relatively short legs... But nevertheless, I'm quite tall!

Nice voiceover Matt 👍 I had the sausage and mash too - not bad I thought. I was reasonably happy with my Club Europe flight to Malta recently but tbh, having not been on any long-haul business, I can’t really compare atm and I probably have lower expectations (and definitely shorter legs!). Like your flight, it also seemed half the passengers were in business! Maybe everyone’s using their ‘future travel vouchers’ up!

Cheers Mark - still a bit husky but wanted to get the video out! Normally, in flight meals promise a lot and under-deliver. This is one of the first that under-promised (bangers and mash? Seriously???) but over-delivered! BA european business is a long way from Qatar's Q-Suites!

Just watching your video this week from sunny hot Cyprus 28C with one of our companion vouchers. We flew BA Glasgow -Heathrow-Larnaca in business 4.5 hours great flight but the service on our flight was very good also the food was reasonable, but we did have bad luck in the Galleries lounge South terminal with this new Q R code ordering, ordered 2 drinks still waiting for them. So will see what return leg goes like, not looking forward to arriving in Heathrow with all the bad press about immigration plus the paper work to fill in before we depart anyway having a nice time here will try and put some in case for home 😎😎😎 Thanks again Matt

Cheers Peter. Every time I see a comment from you I want to invite you to "Cheer Up" (I really hope you get that reference) but if you're in Cyprus I don't need to! How many rows of business did you have? It'll probably feature in a future video but the UK passenger landing form was a bit fiddly - they ask you to scan the QR code on your vax record which is tricky if you don't have it printed, otherwise it was OK. Then at Heathrow the wait for an e-gate was exactly 0 minutes - straight through... The wait times can be normal - don't believe the media! Cheers again.

I'll be hoping that BA holds the A320 on the Reina Sofia to Heathrow runs then, but saying that I am only 5 foot 6 so I can assuredly say that this is one occassion where I have an advantage over chaps like you Matt (quite apart from the fact the air is just a tad thicker down here). ;) Good to see you got back on a plane. Probably be a while for me, at least until the begining of next year tbh.

It's nice to be back in the air again, isn't it? Having travelled with parents in the past who needed wheelchair assistance, I can only imagine the distress the situation must have caused your seat mate, whom I'm sure appreciated your considerate ear and witty banter! If he was a senior as you intimated, i'm surprised nobody from BA special services was lined up to provide assistance for him - at least at LHR, but hopefully the rest of his journey was uneventful and stress-free.

That's a good point about special services... He was mentally drafting the letter he was going to write to Heathrow's Chairman and I am sure he has very impressive letterhead...

why should an old white duke get better treatment than anyone else who needs mobility help from ba special services? something wrong with this really

@@orionbaden-powell1496 He wasn't asking for anything more than anyone else with serious mobility issues. Anyone would have been upset by the treatment, whether they were noble or not!

@@orionbaden-powell1496 they shouldn't, and likely don't (in terms of wheelchair assistance, etc) - it's more a case of them being more likely to have the ear (or address) of those in senior positions within these organisations, and therefor more likely to have complaints taken a bit more seriously than you or I would have.

That 321 neo is certainly the most tight quarters I have ever encountered on a plane. My one experience was exacerbated by mediocre service on board and what can best be described as atrocious service at Heathrow. I can only hope that the next time I fly with BA they are less focused on emulating a bad trip on a low cost carrier. Glad to see that the British aristocracy continues to produce people who contradict the idea that they are all too siuck up to talk to the plebs.

Cheers Les - there's a couple of emergency exit seats on an A321 that are quite nice but it's a tough plane to love! And my row-mate was a very nice chap - not at all what you'd expect from his title!

I'm guessing like myself your US trip from this month has been either cancelled or postponed? I've managed to get mine moved to late November, so hoping that i'll be doing some more flying 6 weeks from now - and with some long-haul finally in the mix!

I'm still booked for the 15th October, but there's been a cancellation within the itinerary which gives me the golden ticket to rebook. Again. Holding off as long as possible in the diminishing hope that the US will announce the exact date they'll let people in... I already have something booked for very early December so starting to think I may have to shunt mine to January... Which will be a bit annoying but I need to go to get content for the channel!

Hi Matt, love your videos and this one in particular is timely for me as I am head to Malta this week in BA Business class. Just had one question, did you use Verifly to upload your vaccination status on this trip? Or were you able to upload your certificate in Manage my booking, or during the online check in process? Thanks

Hi Jon. Didn't need or use Verifly out or back. Everything went into the BA website or the UK government locator form site. I did mention Verifly to the check in person on the way out and they said it wasn't necessary. My tip would be to print everything out - coming back, the app took a picture of the vaccine QR code which would have been very tricky if I didn't have it printed out. Still took a while to line everything up but it was relatively seamless... No online check in at Malaga either as everyone needed to have documents checked at the airport even if they'd uploaded everything so you might aim for the airport a little earlier than you might otherwise as the queues were quite long. Good luck - you should be fine!

@@MattsPlanet Thanks for the info, as you can probably tell I haven’t flown overseas since all the extra requirements have come in. On the way out, loading everything in the BA Website, is that during the online check in, or in Manage My Booking. I have looked in MMB, but can’t see anywhere to upload docs.

@@jonmitchell282 The important part is to not worry - it will be fine!!! I had the Spanish Locator form first, which BA was very good at prompting me towards. Then I think I needed to link the Spanish form to my booking as part of the check-in process. Then coming back, BA prompted me again for the UK locator form (which you can only do 48 hours before returning). If I recall, the UK form required the vax proof plus proof of booking the day 2 test - I used the ExpressTest place at Heathrow T5 arrivals - not the cheapest but very, very convenient! So in essence, most data went into the Spanish and English locator forms and the proof of the locator form went into the check in process. Sounds quite complex when I type it, but as long as you have the vax proof and the receipt from the day 2 test, you'll be fine!

I travel to ibiza from lhr t5…..what winds me up is like you say no leg room it’s a fake business class…..emails I have sent to ba have been ignored. Might as-well go economy on a 2 hour flight.

I thought business class had the fold flat seats, you seat looks like economy?

My point exactly! This was an intra-Europe flight on a narrow body jet where the "business class" seat can be sold as an Economy seat the next day. Longer flights are usually served by bigger planes with lie flat seats - although you could end up on this plane heading to Cairo or Amman, which are 5 hours away which I think qualifies as Long Haul.
