FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

I was Private pilot in Kenya in the 1960's. I flew solo in a Cessna 150 from Nairobi to Nakuru which means going into the Rift Valley. Nairobi is 5500 ft and the Rift Valley peaks 7000 + ft. On the return, I flew lowish in the valley to admire the view and wild game. In front was a wall, about 2000 ft high which I must climb over. Try as I might, the aircraft would not respond sufficiently when it came to gaining altitude. I felt trapped. I realized the mountainous down winds were the problem. I turned back, gained sufficient height and approached from a much greater altitude. I had no fuel problem so the extra distance was OK but my ETA was stuffed. Lesson learned.

I really appreciate how humble you are as a pilot. It's good to not get overconfident and you clearly do a great job of knowing your limits. There are lots of pilots out there who don't respect their limits and get into trouble:

+FlightChops I know a story of a guy in a Cessna 150 who tried to take off from Lake Tahoe airport (not far from Truckee) in the middle of summer during the hottest part of the day. The density altitude was around 10,000 ft and his Cessna 150 was fully loaded. Someone suggested to him that he not take off but he attempted to take off anyway and ended up running off the end of the runway and crashing.

I did this on Monday in a glass cockpit Cessna 172 running Jet-A (diesel) at Truckee airport. It was my first time in the left seat as a proper flight student in 30 years. The density altitude was 8200’. Took a bit of runway to get it flying, but it flew! Summer air temps also meant a fair bit of turbulence - my trial by fire. :) I lived... can’t wait to go again.

New glass PFD/MFD, high DA, plane with handling a little different than you are used to, unfamiliar airport/airspace, CFI talking, high winds, and partly coordinating the videography: yeah, that's a bit of over load. great job in keeping it together and what a great CFI. good shit. I'm just getting back into flying after a 2 year break. My situational awareness always narrows down to a pinhole when I'm in a near aircraft and environment---but, the more experienced you are, the quicker you are to get comfortable. Still, the first time in a new place and machine is like being a new student all over again. humbling.

Interesting vid. I've flown almost exclusively in Colorado (182RG - 300HP) and I'm not sure I've ever landed or taken off with a density altitude of less than 5000 (frequently in the 8000-9000 range) here. It's interesting to "see how the other half lives" and the challenges for pilots who come from a low altitude background. Would love to feel what it's like near sea level, might have a learning curve all its own! Amusingly, I've landed in Kansas and Nebraska a couple of times and actually found the lack of terrain a bit disconcerting for my sight picture.

Good Stuff! Thanks for sharing! Always Flying here in the North east and never really having to consider any of the Density altitude. Planning a trip to Arizona in a few months and this was a great leaning oportunity and a good start. #BoseA20
