IMO you cannot call a horse great after just 6 races. I know it’s a different world now, and most great race horses only run a few times. But Secretariat ran 21 races in 16 months. This horse runs 6 races over 2 years (mainly this year I know) but still no comparison

Secretariat lost his Maiden race , Flightline won his Maiden by 12. Secretariat lost a few races before they retired him. Flightline won all his races by more then 71 lengths combined. Prat never used the whip. He just rode him. What’s to compare after winning a Grade 1 race on his 3 start and the rest is history. What more do you want ? Them other horses he beat ran their eyeballs out trying to catch up with him. Just because he didn’t break track time records doesn’t mean you can’t compare him to Secretariat. If there would’ve been a horse that ran with him throughout the race guess what ? Records broken ! 5 of those races he finished under a gallop. And if you look at a video of him after he won the BCC. You’ll notice that Flightline didn’t even break a sweat. AT All ! And was sold for $184 million dollars a few days later! Now that’s a record !! No horse matched his stride. Sorry if you are unsatisfied for him firing every single time he ran.

@@6cobrasnake9 first of all secretariat was smashed out of the gate in his maiden, watch the film. He then won 10 straight, all in a period of 8 months. Second, not saying Flightline is not a great horse, but run him 21 times in 16 months and see what kind of figures he puts up.

@@kevinevans5921If he was that great , he should’ve recovered and he would’ve won the race. Just like Flightline did in the Met mile . He broke slow , he took up twice that even the track announcer thought he was done and in the end he won. How many were grade 1 races after he broke his Maiden? Not one horse that flightline beat raced again with him. Who else would want to run against him again? If there was a horse that would beat him then the owners would have to supplement their horse in the BCC. Just like they did in the 1st BCC. with Wild Again. What’s more to prove ? Besides $184 million sounds pretty good. By the way what happened to Epicenter during the BCC. ? 10 for 10 Ruffian was that not good enough for someone like you? No I guess not. Keep running her until she breaks her legs. That’s what you want to see right ? And $184 million gone It never happened just because you weren’t satisfied.

Authentic was faster, at 3, same race, same track, less hype. After a TC campaign. Not 6 months of a roids cycle at the farm to start the year.

Looking at Flightline run and win effortlessly, was like looking at propeller planes chasing The Concord. Stalking speedsters like, Life is Good and Speakers Corner . Then see Flightline hit the afterburners and pull away in the stretch like nothing! The Belmont is a 1 1/2 mile distance race , Secretariat won by 31 lengths . The PCC is a 1 1/4 mile distance race & Flightline won by 19 lengths under a cantor Gallop. Secretariat won the Belmont driving at the wire. Now if Flightline would’ve been pressed with another 1/4 mile the length of a home stretch. How many lengths would’ve Flightline won by ? By adding a 1/4 mile more and pressed all the way to the wire , how many lengths would he had won by ? ? ?

Secretariat beat no one in the Belmont when Sham broke down during the race. He had only beaten Sham by a couple of lengths in the first two Triple Crown races. My friend, Mike Venezia, who was a regular rider in New York told me that on Belmont Day in 1973, they packed the track down hard, making it concrete like, to improve running time. The also then did this for Ruffian's match race which she (like Sham) broke down and had to be destroyed. This 'packing' of tracks has been discontinued and now we have unaided running times. Also, Secretariat was beaten five times out of 21 races and in one case it was by a $15,000 claimer named Onion, and then by a nondescript horse named Prove Out. The true measuring rod for greatness is 'Win %', for any horse who has the highest lifetime 'Win%', automatically has the lowest 'Loss %', which proves he was the most difficult to defeat. You also have to examine who a horse ran against in his races, making sure they weren't abundantly against inferior competition, as was the case with Secretariat. The knock on Flightline is that he ran so few races........but other than that, you can't fault him, as you can with Secretariat.

It’s a shame that you all didn’t get to hear about him til the end. For if you would’ve been interested from his 1st race or 2nd race . Then you would’ve known him . But it seems that everyone started to know about him when he won the PCC. Then the BCC. So who was Flightline? He was just a horse that won 6 out of 6 by more then 71 lengths combined. He never ran in any Derby due to health issues and an accident in which required many stitches. So now it seems that he was unknown to many people posting their comments and all you know of is secretariat. Flightline a horse that was perfectly well named, who was retired an unbeaten talented champion . You should’ve been there on his 1st race to really know who Flightline was . No worries another like him will be around next year or maybe never in your life . Just like Trevor Denman said as Flightline entered into the stretch . By far the very best I’ve ever seen .

Da horse ya mentioned unbeaten at 14 race . Then how about Citation unbeaten At 16 races Cigar try to go 17 but got beat .

@@Michael-db8bk Frankel never ran in the States, and there was a good reason for that; he'd have gotten run off the track. His best time for a mile on turf was 1:37 and change; CLAIMERS run that here. Better to stay in the UK, run against inferior competition, build a perfect record and collect massive stud fees. His connections aren't dumb, that's for sure.

Da owners should run Flight line in da Dubai derby next year 2023. N not retire him . Yeah he is a four yr old n I get that but run him in da DUBAI DERBY THEN RETIRE HIM . He is a horse of a lifetime who got injured n couldn’t run at 2 /3 in derby races or juvenile race at two

A little old man “Shoemaker” took care of business for the west. I can’t remember champion horses coming out west from the East to beat us? The West kicks ass back East for sure!

Take nothing away from him but it's all about retiring for the Breeding ! There was a time when you had races for older horses the jockey club and now they retire them at 3 they even retired life is good not good for racing also the days of affirmed spectacular Bid or John Henry where you actually beat somebody like I said take nothing away from that monster flightline but it would have been nice to see a few races at 5

Shouldn't be. He blew himself out inthe 1st half. And he wasn't even on the lead, which means the early fractions weren't even his @ all - something else not mentioned. Notice they stop mentioning his times at the quarter pole? He did NOT run his consecutive points of call faster than the last one. Q.E.D.: He is no Secretariat. They are embarrassing themselves w/that stuff. What is even more embarrassing is what the rest of that field of what on that day were considered VERY nice horses ended up looking like. I wonder how something like that performance could possibly affect their stud values? I wonder if any of those owners & trainers ever considered how they could be getting set up by participating in something like this?

I’m sure he knew this was his retirement race and a horse this valuable you don’t risk injuring for a fast time when it’s not needed.

It was close enough, 2:00.05, and he was well ahead, no reason to risk hurting him. He's an excellent horse, and it's a shame he had the injury bug so bad... you can't put him on the list of all-time greats on the basis of six races, no matter how impressive they are.

Life is Good forced Flightline to run wide all the way around, and Pray unfortunately shut Flightline down the last 16th. Basically FL cruised to second faster BC classic ever. Authentic broke the track record set by American Pharoah five years ago in the same race. The teletimer did not function properly so the race was hand-timed, initially in 1:59.16 based on the video and then in 1:59.60 using additional camera angles. That was a lot faster than Flightline's time of 2:00.05 Authentic's record was also at Keeneland against a much tougher group of horses.

Does winning a race mean anything or does breaking the track record mean more then just winning. Do jockeys carry a stop watch ? I guess if they did and you are 12 lengths if front and you are 1/8 mile away from winning. You look at your stop watch and can figure out and say “hey we can do this” so the jockey starts whipping the horse like crazy to get him to run faster then you cross the wire and dammm missed it by 1/4 of a second. You come back to the winner’s circle and you get nothing but boo’s and “you stupid jerk you missed it by 1/4 second you suck! “. That is how you look at this game. A track record must be made to keep your boat afloat. Just like all the haters that think Flightline is nothing compared to all them horses that have track records that are long gone. To them Flightline didn’t win nothing , not even a BCC.

I'm on day 12 of my boycott of thoroughbred racing. We deserve better. The racing industry has been treating us like garbage far too long. Flightline retiring after 6 races was the final straw. I'll be back, but for now it's time to find other hobbies and activities.

Final race times can be deceiving. Ex: Secretariat ran at Arlington in a one mile race and was clocked in 4 lengths slower than the winner, a good but not great horse, named Prove Out. I believe Secretariat's final time was 1.35.4. Compare that to Dr. Fager running one mile at Arlington when he carried 134 lbs, not the 121 I believe Secretariat carried, and won by 10 lengths in World Record Time of 1.32.1 for the one mile distance. Secretariat did run against inferior horses at times and recorded 16 lifetime wins with 5 losses. Dr. Fager won 19 of 22 lifetime starts with one of those losses to Iron Ruler on disqualification for 'brushing' him as he passed him in the stretch and won by 10 lengths. When they met again at a later date, Dr. Fager destroyed Iron Ruler. His other two losses were to 2 Year old Champion 'Successor' by 1/2 length and to Damascus (the three year old Champion) in the 1-1/4 mile Brooklyn Handicap. Damascus used a rabbit named Hedavar, for it was common knowledge that 'Fager' was a headstrong, hard horse to 'rate' when he was young, and he lost the race by a few lengths to Damascus. When they met again at 1-1/4 miles in The Suburban Handicap', shortly after the Brooklyn Handicap, Hedavar was forced to scratch out of the race and Dr. Fager totally destroyed Damascus. He was never beaten by inferior horses like Onion and Prove Out, both of whom beat Secretariat. In addition to all I've said, keep in mind that there was only one horse in the history of thoroughbred racing to win four separate divisions of 'Horse Of The Year' in one year.......and that was Dr. Fager. He won the 'Sprint' Title by carrying 139 lbs in The Vosburgh Handicap at 7 furlongs in record time of 1.20.1 'eased up''. He won 'The Grass Championship' by defeating the top turf horses of the time in The U.N. Handicap. He won the 'High Weight - Handicap Championship' by averaging 134 lbs per race in an undefeated year of racing, and he was awarded 'Overall Horse Of The Year' as well. Because he came down with colic when he was a three year old, he wasn't able to participate in the Triple Crown Races. He was the most versatile race horse of all time.

He, on two occasions, ran mediocre horses in his stable against Secretariat and beat him easily both times. I believe that proves he knew what he was talking about.

@@6cobrasnake9 Winning by 71 lengths is nice but look at the opposition. The only big name horse he beat was Country Grammer who was exhausted as many horses are from his trip to Dubai and back. The best mile and a quarter horse in the BCC, Epicenter had a condylar fracture. Otherwise, the race would have been much closer and Flightline might have lost. Flightline has never tried a mile and a half which Secretariat did three times winning twice and second once. One of those was on the dirt and the time of 2:24 is still the fastest ever. The one over turf was 2:24 4/5. That is also very fast.

They leave today & they arrive? About what a week later ? Do they let them out for them to stretch their legs when they stop to refuel ? I wonder? Then why is it that they win from traveling from a far?

If a horse is all alone in front nearing the finish line, why would you want to whip him to run faster? Is it about breaking track records? Or is it about winning a race? What are you looking for? He finished 5 out of 6 under a gallop nearing the finish line. Jockey looks back and his competition is far behind then hey we got this. You don’t see a baseball player hit a home run and then see him run as fast as he can to get to home plate.

Do they give out a bonus to the track player or to the connections of the horse that breaks the track record? Does a jockey wear a stop watch to go for the record ?

People who watch a documentary on a horse that ran half a century ago on You Tube believe that somehow a horse that lost his maiden and 4 more races after that is for them a GOD or a Goat. When the real talk is about Flightline. Its not about a horse that’s long gone. Yeah ok your Horse is GODS horse. Does your GOD know the pick 6 winners for this coming up weekend at 3 major track’s ? Yeah, but they were in grand style & he's undefeated...and has huge Beyer speed figures. Those people might know just a little about it...

@@cindyrissal3628 I saw a post of someone who his an estimate of Secretariat's Belmont Beyer rating. Even though Beyer ratings were not available back then, Secretariat's rating was way above Flightline's rating.

In the winner's circle they were hyping this horse as being the hero they needed that was going to save racing. Really?? I thought American Pharoah was supposed to.do.that! You mean it looks like his 5 yrs are up already??

@@cindyrissal3628 As do.the rest of uson the backside & the farms. So,what were the horse's final fractions, anyway? P.S. - I had no idea that you get points going to stud for "style". We are currently manufacturing slow horses in this country.

They would've done better to call him the next Seattle Slew, who won the Triple Crown w/hardly any races. There was a time when that would've been a happy compliment. I mean, he threw speed like crazy & was one of the late 20th century's most money-in-the- bank producers. Ah, but then again, he did also throw heart defects.
