FlightSimBuilder GNS530 GPS/NAV/COMM Hardware Review

What started out as a short product review video ended up as a 530 tutorial complete with an RNAV approach using the GNS 530 hardware unit from FlightSimBuilder. This demonstration is using MSFS and the WB-SIM modified 172 available on JustFlight.com As a preview tester of this very realistic 172, I will follow-on with a full review of the plane. You can use this unit with any plane in Xplane or MSFS that uses a GNS 530 in the airplane. You can use this unit in stock airplanes without the 172x mod by WB-SIM.
In real life, this is about at $10,000 add-on to an airplane. Most likely those who don't want a full suite of G1000 PDF and MFD, which is a lot more expensive.

I stopped playing FS after FS2004 cause I never had powerfull enough PC for FSX. I see all these awesome videos and how beautifull MSFS2020 looks. I am no mid 50 and think to come back.

Great video - huge thanks for making and posting - I took delivery of my FSB GNS 530 last week, and really love it - mainly because the C172 is my favourite plane in MSFS at the moment. A quick question if I may - does your 2 sec long hold of the CLR button/key work (i.e. default back to Nav Map)? Everything on my unit works flawlessly apart from this - and I don't know if I need to anything to get it to work "properly"? Regards, Alasdair

Heya, I have the RealSimGear 530 and have the same issue. I'm using a spad.next profile, and the profile author was surprised when i mentioned it, so this could well be a (recent) sim issue

@@susanneflach3442 I contacted FlightSimBuilder direct with a query on this, and the swift response from them was as follows: “Unfortunately MSFS doesn’t support long press CLR (like x-plane does) at the moment unless you press it with the mouse so it doesn’t work. Once MSFS fixes it, it will work. We are also looking for a workaround until it’s fixed but nothing yet.” So at least I am not missing anything or doing anything stupid! I am too old and decrepit to start learning how to use SPADnext or Axis and Ohs etc., so am waiting patiently to see if MSFS enables the long press, or if FSB manage to come up with a workaround. Even with this very small shortcoming, I have to say that I do love the FSB panel. Regards to all.

Just tested it. 2 sec long hold doesn't work on the FlightSimBuilder 530 even though it works in the sim. I will ask Andrew about his RealSimGear 530 and see if his works. I will let FlightSimBuilder know .

FROM my understanding and I have been doing RNAV approaches thinking its me..but MSFS G530 dosesnt capture the GS on the 530 during an RNAV approach. The G1000 has no problem ..just the G530. Is the Flightsimbuilder software correcting this problem? or is it the mod aircraft 172 that your flying? Try it on the MSFS stock aircraft with steam gauges if you would...I just bought the G1000 because of this problem. Thumbs up! what we need is a mod that corrects this issue for the G530 in all aircraft.The existing mod thats out there doesnt fix this either.

Great video, thank you. One question. How did you manage to have the GNS530 screen on that small monitor. I'm not talking about the hardware, I'm talking about how to have the screen information. I have a small 5" monitor attached to my video card.

To add the GNS screen from the sim to your 5" monitor, you hold down the right ALT key, then click the GNS screen in the sim to make it pop out to a separate screen. Then drag it to your 5" screen. Once there, press ALT and ENTER to make it full screen without borders. This goes for any of the hardware products like RealSimGear and FlightSimBuilder like the G1000 PFD and MFD.

Fantastic review! Quick Question. How much of a hit does FPS suffer by having this Flightsimbuilder GNS530 connected? When i connect my ipad and popout a Gns530 to it i suffer about a 3FPS hit? Is this similar or what has your experience been. Thanks.

Hi Lonn. With 4 screens in my setup, adding the 530 with the StarTech USB to HDMI dongle had no difference in my fps. Maybe because it is separate than my graphics card? I will be watching closely now that you mention it.

I am still watching the video while writing this but are the buttons on the unit in sim have mappings that can be bounded? Is the unit recognized as a peripheral like a joystick?

The buttons and dials are already mapped to the same function in the sim. This is done by the FlightsimBuilder software you run first. Nothing had to be done manually. Once your sim is running, just drag the screen to the device. The buttons and dials just work.

This is really interesting Howard. I fly exclusively in VR and have been using the Cessna 172 with the G1000 but I just find the panels unusable with my little mouse trackpad. I had seen there were G1000 panels for hundreds of dollars and I felt it wouldn't be worth buying but from visiting the flightsimbuilder site it seems this GNS530 is only $280 and can be mounted straight onto the Honeycomb yoke that I have so I could use it in VR. Has anyone tried using these in VR with the Cessna 172 Steam guage in MSFS? Now that that plane a study level electronics and avianics add on I'm very tempted to buy the add on and the GNS530 and switch to that plane for a more realistic and immersive experience...

Hi Kevin, no one I know so far have used this combination in VR with this enhanced 172 and the 530. I am very happy with the performance of the 530 and this plane. And so have more since this video who have bought both of them. I will ask my twitch flying community if anyone uses VR with this combo. I am sure someone will have by now and will come back here and note it. Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Thanks for a great video Howard. How did you mount this to your Velocity Flight panel ? I'd like to do the same. I have the same dual cutouts on the right, (mid/upper panel) as you. I have 2 Logitech radio panels mounted in there for now but would like to replace them with this.

Yes, I mounted it on the FlightVelocity panel. If you look at that video, it is on the right. I had to cut out a square that size, but easily doable. This makes my Cessna 172 home cockpit similar to the one in the sim with the conventional gauges and a GNS 530 in the stack. You could even get a second one to use as a 430, but it is not necessary, as one of your radio panels can sub for COM2, NAV2 and use your 530 for COM1, NAV1. Rock and Roll.

@@paulthurston2883 yes, if you look at my Velocity Video Part 2 you see I have the 530 above the AutoPilot panel. The AP panel is the same size as your radio panel, so it works. Good luck.
