You leave in a country where when someone leaks a document proving a public employee committed a crime, nobody goes after the criminal. Instead, they go after the "leakee", call him a national traitor and condemn him to death, forcing him to live in exile.

There was enough regulation, it is just that MDEQ (Michigan department of environmental protection) did the bare minimum that it thought it was required to do. In doing so it probably acted negligently. Not a good thing to do when the issue is related to public health.

I live in Flint and I experienced this first hand. My elderly mother drank the water and my young niece drank the water. We were told that because of the lead levels in her blood, she would now have learning disabilities and a lower IQ among other things. What isn't told in this video is that many residents in flint live in poverty and can't afford to replace filters that go bad after a few months. Even though we are on Detroit water now, lead still seeps from the pipes and gets into the water. It is 2017 now, and all of the cities old pipes still have not been replaced. Flint schools were already some of the worst in the entire state, and now with this problem, children require even more attention then before. This was not the cities' fault at all, our governor pretty much forced the switch just to save a few million dollars. There has been some improvements, but just because the media isn't covering it anymore, doesn't mean the problem is completely gone.

Wait, so they were just pumping water directly from the river into people's homes?!?!
@x0acake
@x0acake 8 жыл бұрын
+Will Parkinson They treated it. But not for chlorides, which are super corrosive. Many homes in America have lead pipes (including mine). Corrosion + lead pipes = lead leaks into water. Corrosion + iron pipes = the brown water you see in this video. Lead pipes usually aren't a problem because they immediately develop an oxide skin when exposed to oxygen, which keeps the lead separate from the water.

I watched an in depth documentary on this, and something that shocked me was the exact amount of lead in the water at the Walter's house, also known as "Ground Zero". Safe lead levels is 15 parts per billion (ppb) or below. Above 5,000 ppb is considered hazardous. Ground Zero had over 150,000 ppb of lead in their water. Their children couldn't even bathe in the water without extreme agony and rashes. It's ridiculous

Gov. Synder is/was running Michigan like a business. His strategy to save money was to install Emergency Managers in cities that were in bad shape. So, he used a top down (corporate) approach in Flint to balance the budget. Turns out the EM had to only report to Gov. Synder -- devoid of the people of Flint, the mayor, and the city council. This is a prime example of what happens when people elect a business model into the governorship. You get people who will undermine the people of cities in whichever way possible to save money. They are just being good capitalists, by the way. The social costs are what we are currently seeing. Capitalism has an instinctual resistance towards social ails as Capitalism only cares about making/saving as much money as possible. People in Michigan got what they voted for (or because they didn't come out to vote).

Flint was broke. Broke. You don’t grow money on trees. You can just get all the services in the world free of cost. They should have just raised taxes for all the people that was left and keep paying for the water until there was no one in Flint anymore.

I have lived in Michigan all my life and have always had water from Detroit. Then I moved to northern Oakland County and the wells are just the same as flint water. It’s orange/brown water. I’ve been drinking only water bottles for over 5 years. My hair turned orange (it was blonde before).

WHAT happened to the 100 Million in taxpayers money that President Trump sent to Flint City leaders to repair the situation there when he office?? The PROBLEM IS that the voters never hold the LOCAL POLITICIANS WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING THESE SERVICES RESPONSIBLE. And they don't pay attention to local elections either.

The water from the flint river isn’t a problem. It is the fact that they failed to add corrosion control agents to the water that poisoned the people of flint. Without the corrosion control agents, the scale in the lead supply pipes going to homes dissolved into the water, which is the only thing preventing lead from entering the water. Switching back to Detroit’s will help, but it will take time for the scale to grow back...

Quick question since I'm not from the states. Is piped water usually declared as drinkable water? Because this is the case in Germany and other countries but I've always thought piped water in the US is in general not drinkable.
@thinktwice6246
@thinktwice6246 3 жыл бұрын
Piped water is declared drinkable. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has regulations on the safety of water to drink which must be met. However just because water is drinkable it doesn't necessarily mean it's great. Technically safe drinking water can be discolored, not taste good, and other similar qualities. Notably in the case of Flint, the discoloration in the water wasn't actually caused by the lead, and the discoloration alone wouldn't actually impact the base safety of the water (I still wouldn't drink it but we're looking from a very technical standpoint here). Lead poisoning can actually occur in 100% clear water. This was one of the many reasons why the city could ignore people bringing this hideous water to their face. TL;DR Technically "safe" drinking water can look and taste unappetizing. This is why American drinking water can be safe yet something you probably don't want to be drinking in some places.
