FLIP openings part 3

Rare opening music and titles from the "Flip the Frog" series, many being heard for the first time this week since the original showings. Scanned from master materials of the films at the UCLA Archives.These will be included on the long awaited 'Flip the Frog' Blu-ray set (volume 1 and 2) from Thunderbean Animation and Film Preservation Associates.

Devon Baxter “What a Life” was one of some “Flip the Frog” cartoons that didn’t have the MGM Jackie logo at the beginning, and it was one of the earlier reissues from the 1940’s I believe. “The Soup Song” was also another one that doesn’t have the Jackie logo, and the MGM copyright and the static logo was not shown.

Nicholas O'Hagan I guess that this doesn’t have the MGM Jackie logo at the beginning, it was an early reissue from the late 1930’s or 1940’s.

@@Musicradio77Network - Don't worry. Steve Stanchfield will restore all Flip the Frog cartoons including all the original MGM Jackie the Lion logos and titles as soon as possible.

Do you have the very first "Flip" opening titlecard from 1930, which was just a still image of his original design strumming a banjo. I think it was only used for his first 3 cartoons, "Fiddlesticks" and "Flying Fists" (both in Technicolor!) and "Little Orphan Willie" (in B&W!)

Yes, although It's a different card between the Black and White and color versions. The first four cartoons appear to have been made in color only and shown in England, using the 'Harriscolor' process, not Technicolor. I'm not entirely sure the second two in color saw that release in England, but the first two (Fiddlesticks and Little Orphan Willie) did. MGM released these color films in Black and White here in the states but never in color.

Nice NTSC print! I’ve seen the slightly higher pitched PAL prints more often than these ones.

I’ve never seen these before. These have the MGM Jackie logo at the beginning, except “The Soup Song” and “What a Life” doesn’t have it as well. The Jackie roar was silent for all of the “Flip the Frog” shorts.

Can you try to explain the different sounding intro theme in “the pony express” and why it was only changed for that one but for future shorts they re use the old one???
