Learn about how boulders and large stones can be prevented from becoming caught in a demersal (bottom) trawl during fishing.

'Flip-up rigs' fitted to a trawl when working on stony ground can often save fishing crews time and money in repairs. A flip-up rig will also help a trawl to glide safely over obstacles that would otherwise cause the trawl to become fast (snagged).
The video includes footage of a 1/15 scale model trawl in a flume tank, together with underwater observations of a full size trawl operating on stony ground. Contact Sea Fish Industry Authority - or visit our website - for more information on how to construct a flip-up rig suitable for your trawl.

Well i guess bottom trawling are here to stay. But its better to make a trawl that climb over rocks than towing the rocks along PLOWING the bottom destroying both a big area + destroying the trawl. I wish we had such rock climbers back in say 1970s when i worked on a 50 feet shrimp trawler wit just a chain and a few used car tires follow the bottom🤔 Things got a bit scary a few times for example when we say got a rusty mine from ww2 in the trawl, and had to call in the coast guard to tow it away and detonate it by adding a c4 charge to it. Becouse they said it was to dangerous to say disarm it even though the mines detonation spikes was all rusted-corroded away, so it didnt go off in the trawl ore on deck. 😉
