I restored this old 18ft dovetail car hauler with a wash, paint, new lights and stain. My goal was to sell the trailer within a week and I made $550 with about 10 hours of work.

only if he would have known about the primer/paint that Rost oleum makes that has written in bold letters: YOU CAN USE IT OVER RUST WITHOUT HAVING TO REMOV IT/sand it/.

This was a realistic flip. Too many ppl online would lie and act like they sold it for $4900. Lol My trailer is starting to get pretty rough and I might have to fix it up. That deck looks nice for just throwing the sealer on it. Trailer prices have gone crazy over the last 5-10 years. In 2016 I bought a 16 ft car hauler new for $1850. Now they are wanting closer to $3500 for it!

Nice flip. If you have a compressor you might want to consider buying a gallon of Rustoleum paint and use it instead of spray cans. A little cheaper in the long run and you could probably get 3-4 trailers out of 1 gallon of paint. You can use just about anything to thin it from mineral spirits to gasoline and a cheap harbor freight gun to spray it.

I’ve tried it once before and it went the worst way possible lol. Bought a cheap spray gun on Amazon and got it all ready to paint, did like 3 sprays and it looked terrible, then the tip popped off and covered my arms and hands with the paint. So I’ve been hesitant to try it again. Definitely would be a cheaper option though.

@@charliefarms1The electric sprayer that Harbor Freight has works pretty good. Ive painted a metal shed, wood deck, etc with it and it has worked flawlessly.

A tip for painting rims, use a deck of cards to line the rim, works great and you can reuse them and you can get a pack for a buck

Thanks! Do you have any recommendations on tools to fix bent fenders? Working on one now and it’s thicker metal than the other trailers I’ve worked on. Pretty tough to bend. Didn’t know if there was some shaper or roller type thing yall use

Most body work I've seen like that was exactly like you did only swap the wood block for a rounded piece of thick/heavy metal. Concept is exactly the same

That surface rust will burn through that half ass paint job fast. Pull the boards and accessories off, buff the trailer, spray or roll all the metal parts.

that trailer will last for a bit. real world no one will pay 6k+ for a trailer. if you have objections please give us a video and proof you sold for 6k+ most of the cheap Fks on marketplace will NOT pay no matter how well you do the work.

well really the fenders needed replaced i usually dont buy rough fendered trailers unless i plan on replacing them. too many out there painting junk and flipping with bent axles and so on but hey yours came out great looked awesome

What primer did you use on the rust? I want to do a quick resto on mine but dont want to sandblast it.

I used rustoluem primer. It’s definitely important to use a degreaser and a strong pressure washer. The turbo tip works best. A car wash pressure washer won’t be strong enough.

Thanks! I actually do both!. I go into more detail about it in my video “how to find trailers cheap” but basically it depends on your state, how valuable the trailer is, and if it even has one to begin with.

ya you definitely couldve gotten around 3k. looks like a 7k trailer based on axles. the fenders look great though, i was shocked they came out as nice as they did! Nothing against you I just figured the black paint would make the dents that were left stick out more.

In Texas it's hard to get titles for trailers. have two in my back yard that sit because of Hassel of it

Can you just register it as a home built with the tax assessor's office? That's what I did with my boat trailer instead of hunting down a lost title.

@@loganferkol4671 I was told you have to show receipts .and go to dps and get it inspected. It's harder than it used to in texas. In Texas there is no way you can title get to boat unless you have the title boat trailer is different. .

I think it would be better to just buy all new board as long as the old board looks old and then charge double the amount the wood cost

I have flipped many trailers over the years, First go buy a small paint sprayer, it will pay for itself, second. you should have installed new fenders, it would have sold for alot more money- third- thompsons is nothing more than a wax- it will wash away in 45 days, think of waxing your car- how long does it last ? Dont get a bad reputation if you want to keep flipping trailers, Never rush- if it is going to rain, then just wait a day or two. I always checked the lights and wheel bearings. If you would have done more than just wash and paint- you could have made 3 times the profit. This is just my opinion- good luck in the next flip.

I appreciate the feedback. I plan on getting a paint sprayer next spring. Installing new fenders wouldn’t be worth it in my area. Most trailers around here don’t even have fenders, and people don’t have the money to buy a $3,000 trailer unless they’re making payments. Around here a trailer priced at $2,500 would sell faster than anything higher than that.

There is epoxy paint that would have been a lot better I ordered at least added the metal to the back of the fenders the closed them in I give them more support

Invest in a deck/driveway attachment for you Pressure washer. It will pay for itself in your time the first time you use it.

Yep! I found that listing all the pros and cons is the best way for people to read the ad. I list all the good things that’s been done and then list anything that might be a concern to someone (dented fenders, no title, or any other problems I couldn’t fix)

@charliefarms1 you should have been honest then and said that you just painted over the rust and the rust will continue to destroy the frame...don't be lazy do it right...how would you feel if you bought a trailer and the seller simply painted over the rust to hide it?

I do this to my own trailers that I have kept for years. They have held up fine. The selling price of my trailer reflects the work done. If they want a powder coated trailer they can go buy new and it will cost more than double. I am honest with them.

@@macknumber9 majority of people here act like they dont drive a rusted trap box. the trailer will be sound for a bit. thats thick steel right there. whoever does buy a trailer its up to them to do the diligence to inspect and purchase. just how it goes. the whole: buyer beware

Hey I don’t think you will see this but I saw some of your other trailer flips,and I just thought it would make the trailers look nicer if you put the red and white reflective tape on them. In my opinion it just makes the trailers look more high quality and nicer, but that is my opinion. By the way your videos are amazing😁

Rust-oleum professional enamel satin black. It was spray cans. I used 5 cans to do about 3 coats

That’s just primer. And I did, it just wasn’t on film. Thats why the hub and part of the ramp wasn’t done either. Had to buy another can the next day

Hey I recommend not using those lights specific lights. I put them on a trailer recently. You can hardly see when they are blinking if the lights are on. I know they’re cheap, but for a flip, normal halogens are better.
