01:03 - Hardware Overview
01:24 - Pricing
02:16 - Battery Life
02:59 - Adjustable connector for large cases
03:21 - Carrying Case
03:39 - Temperature Range
04:07 - Image Quality Flir One Pro vs. Flir One
05:23 - Video Samples
05:54 - App Overview
06:57 - Additional Pro Camera Features
09:11 - Consumer Camera Features
10:02 - Final Thoughts
I had the opportunity to try out both the pro grade thermal camera and the less advanced (and less expensive) consumer edition.
The Pro version covers a wider temperature range vs. the consumer version and has a more detailed infrared heat sensor. The Pro camera will deliver a much better image vs. the consumer version of the camera.
My biggest gripe with these devices is the short battery life. It will operate for about 45 minutes to an hour before it needs to be recharged. The plus side to this is that it's not using your phone's battery to operate. But I do think short battery life on a tool like this is going to be a point of frustration.
I do like that the connector accommodates large cases thanks to a dial control on the top of the unit. It's largely plug and play and the app is simple enough to get up and running very quickly.

Just a heads up. I’m a Level 3 Certified Thermographer and thermography is my full time job. The image of your 30amp double pole breaker (should be the one running your dryer) at 4:07 is showing the breaker is bad and needs replaced. This is based on the location of the heat within the breaker.
@ItsAlive111
@ItsAlive111 2 жыл бұрын
What's wrong with the heat pattern? Where's the hot spot supposed to be in the breaker?
@RoyBelluomini
@RoyBelluomini 2 жыл бұрын
Probably because that’s a 2 pole breaker and the top breaker is hotter than the bottom breaker. On a 220v device the power draw and heat should be the same on both. Good eye Mikey.

Great review Lon. In my professional career (Glass Manufacturing) we used a lot of IR cameras to monitor the production process. They were amazingly expensive as you said - $30 to $40 thousand dollars and had a water cooling jacket. They had a rotating front surfaced mirror that would scan along the field of view. This is amazing what you can now get in a small handheld package.

They made a lot of nice improvement on these devices and I'm so tempted to get one to play around with. You have a good point about the lightning connector, when FLIR first released these devices it had 30-pin connectors on it and lightning just came out, so they had to discount them almost immediately. They also had issues of the app crashing and lag or improper readings. But these new revisions look good, and way cheaper than an official FLIR hardware device.

Great video Lon. Question. Will the unit record and charge the battery at the same time? I'm wondering if it had a constant supply of power will this extend the use time without draining the battery.
@havingalook2000

I have a pro version. As I understand it it draws from the battery. I have had a tablet where I expected to plug in and power up but no, the battery has to charge, then the device draws from that. The unit is sealed, so not a replaceable battery either. And its not recommended by them to do that either.

Thanks for the comparison - VERY useful regarding increased PRO resolution. HOWEVER: 1) BATTERY: when it fails, is it replaceable? 2) USB PORT DAMAGE: the big module hanging on the tiny USB port looks like a perfect tool to break the USB port socket in the phone. If you drop the phone w/unit attached (a real possibility if a contractor), it could severely damage or ruin the phone. 3) TEMP CURSOR: Is this only available while real time observation? Is the cursor available to take measurements off a pic of video?

One thing that is kind of overlooked is that you can connect a USB power source to the Fleer one and use the camera while it's powered. This would make the time lapse a whole lot more useful...

It seems pretty odd that those limitations on the consumer camera are surely limited by the app, like the multi point especially... That will just be a calculation done by the app, based on the data coming in that's already being used to display the thermal image
@paulwoodward81

We have just got our hands on the consumer version and would love the facility to adjust the range of temperature and from what I can tell is it is limited by the app so we need to buy the more expensive version just to get the app functionality. Would much rather pay a one off £50 to upgrade to the pro version of the applications functionality - maybe its not that simple

update aug 2022. It seems that the newest version of the FLIR ONE SW (Android 3.5.0-tsdk_620) now detects that camera type attached and does NOT allow to take videos with the cheaper Flir One. Well, this might be perceived as betrayal on the consumers. (the more, as the manual for Flir ONE on the official Teledyn Flir site still speaks about the video possibility... 😞).

It seems to me that thermal image resolution isn't that big of a deal. If I needed precision like if I wanted to find out exactly which automotive fuse is drawing power I could use a cheap thermal camera to get a ball park then use my $30 laser thermometer from my kitchen to narrow it down.

Their big issue - which still seems to be cropping up - is problems with the battery. They’ll randomly stop holding a charge, be unable to charge at all, or suddenly stop charging beyond some random number. It seems more like a software error than a problem with their chemistry. I’ve had one for... three? years now, and have had a warranty replacement. They’ve been good about that, at least. My current one is slow to charge and dies quickly, so it might be time for another. They’re also still living down a terrible policy at launch where the app had to sign in to their servers or it wouldn’t open. Which would be a problem if you were, say, under a house. They removed that pretty quickly, but the product page still gets comments about it. Let that be a lesson to app designers - stupid DRM decisions will haunt you.
