Today we put our 12 foot 12 motor flying heli carrier frame into the sky for the first time. With indoor tests and adjustments completed, it is time to add and test two thrusters to give this monster ship forward flight. This aircraft carrier is inspired by the classic iron vulture featured in tailspin. Don Karnage used this crazy contraption to take to the skies with his band of misfits. Our goal in this video is to replicate the flight characteristics of the iron vulture, and once successful, it will be time to build the airframe. This journey is sure to have lots of ups and downs, and even a crash or two along the way.

I'm sure you guys have thought of this - but when you come to build the rest you probably oughta think about triangulating the structure front-to-back and side-to-side to prevent the body twisting under thrust differentials. I'd imagine it's costing a lot of stability, and probably some thrust too.

Really cool project! Tricky with the forward motors confusing the flight controller. It looks like this could be supported in ArduPilot, almost out of the box. It should work as a quad plane with a scripting matrix (Q_FRAME_CLASS=15) for the motors and “Manual Forward Throttle in VTOL Modes” (RCx_OPTION=209) for forward throttle. If there is a lack of PWM outputs it could work with the frame type as octaquad with an H-frame and some motors in parallel.

It also looked like the two "pontoons" (for want of a better term) were oscillating in pitch in relationship to each other - one pontoon would go up slightly, the other down, & vice versa. It might make sense to put something that stiffens between the pontoons so they don't oscillate in reference to each other. I noted this after 15:00 in the video.

It could probably be tuned by diddling the PIDs. But there might be too much structural oscillation for that to be practically possible for the production deadline.

Just a thought, instead of syncing 3 adjacent motors, mix the syncing side to side and sync in 4 motors instead of 3. Might increase stability. Hope this helps. God bless, stay well. Happy New Year!
@michiganengineer8621
@michiganengineer8621 Жыл бұрын
I'm guessing the thought with syncing 3 was to allow more or less standard quad copter control at least as far as the lift/hover is concerned. I do agree with your thought as far as the adjacent motors is concerned. Maybe something like: Motor channel #1 controlling 2 at right front and 1 at left rear, MC2 controls 2 at right rear and 1 at left front, MC3 has 2 at left rear and 1 at right front, MC4 has 2 at left front and 1 at right rear.

Loving the project! You guys are awesome! I recommend moving ALL the batteries to the very middle of the carrier (under the orange foam pad, if possible). I'd like to see you guys build a dedicated launch system on the top of that golf cart that you have. They can get up to pretty good speed and the roof is pretty stable to mount stuff too. You could either design a Carriage with a hook release (manual from the cart or Remote Pilot activated), or even a catapult system that could increase forward speed for faster aircraft. Of course, you could always go full FliteTest crazy and put a carrier deck on top, LOL. Frankly for some of the larger craft you are building lately, something like that would actually be safer. I see you guys hand launching large stuff, or trying to do it from the back of a pickup truck, stuff like that. Just for safety sake a dedicated.. Launch Cart ...seems like a sensible project for you guys to take on.

Good show. It is looks like a turbulence problem. Forwarding motors make a throw on a taking up layer that makes venicle instabill. Basic it is positive takeof pressure must be minimum ocupated. On my opinion its good to put forwarding motors inside on long landing tubes or upyard of the taking of layer.

Love the project guys. My thoughts on the stability, although only an amateur observation, is you guys are treating it like a multirotor programming wise but attempting to fly it like a fixed wing. This seems to make the aircraft pitch for forward movement which makes the thrusters point up forcing the rear down. That action is causing the fight controller to get severely confused.
@OpaFPV
@OpaFPV Жыл бұрын
Great video! I like the idea of Acro mode. Also, please make sure AirMode is set on all the time. As you increase the size of the 12 motors, I'd suggest going with smaller motors for the two thrust motors in back. The two thrust motors are not part of the flight controller, correct? That is, you are inputting thrust through a PWM channel that is going around the "4" motor output from the flight controller. The ArduPilot guys are probably looking at this and ready to make suggestions on how you can get the thrust motors integrated into the flight controller like they do for VTOLs. DaveM

Ok.. of I may add a suggestion. Change the forward thrust motors to tractor motor. Pilling feom the front. That will help in pitch. Also horizontal stabs in rear with elevators simply for trim.

Have you tried a separate TX control just for the "thrusters"? Leave the two main sticks just for the twelve heli motors and bind a slider to control horizontal thrust. That should give you more control and less chance of it trying to over correct.

Like as you increase the throttle it would throttle the two front Motors to help keep the nose down and change the center of lift a little farther forward in order to make it fly level?
