In this episode, the 1000 subscribers prize draw winner, Keith Knowles obtains a guest ticket for me and we go float fishing for chub on the LDASA River Swale at Asenby. The river varies in pace and depth here, however we choose a couple of shallow, fast water swims that we hope are home to our quarry.
Leeds and District Amalgamated Society of Anglers hold the rights to this stretch just above Sheep Hills Farm and Cundall Lodge Farm. The River Swale is also popular for barbel fishing, with the deeper swims generally better suited to to this species and a bait presented on a ledger, feeder or a traditional stick float.
During the day, the fast water swims offer the chance of some prolific sport when targeting the hard fighting chub on balanced tackle. When trotting for chub in fast shallow water the rig I choose is a small drennan loafer float, 5lb line and a size 14 hook to present double maggot or double caster hookbait.
