Love this!!! I sneaked on board as a teenager with my camera to shoot pics “for a school report”. 😂 I was a mega fan even at 12, 13 years old. My dad “paid off” the guard with a 6-pack of beer. Only a few photos exist and I don’t know where they are anymore but the memories are seared in my mind. Love this trip down memory lane. Thank goodness for your love of ships and your archives! ❤

The original Princesses really were ahead of the curve. Sleek and compact, but a very efficient use of space. Great tour. Their fates are a real shame and a tragic ending to two glorious ships 😢

In the late 80's I was a travel agent in Miami. One Christmas Season, there was a "Cruise Ship Extravaganza" in Port Everglades of that time. I got to board, tour, and eat aboard many of the ships. The Island/Pacific Princesses, Cunard Countess/Princess, Stella Solaris, and a few others were sailing off for Christmas Cruises over that week/weekend. We got very loaded on Ouzo on the Stella Solaris and heralded the passengers from the dock with Christmas carols as the ship sailed away. You don't get very lucky to board all those ships these days, and all of those ships are no longer in service and/or scrapped now. When I was growing up, I had all those cruise brochures, and every Saturday night at 9pm, I would sit in front of the tv with my brochure and check the cabins as Julie checked people in. I was very surprised on the PP how small her cabins really were. Promenade 348 was always the top cabin for guests.

Fantastic! First off, STELLA S was one of my great loves. Never got to sail in her but visited and documented many times and even salvaged most of her artwork and furniture from the scrapyard. PP, LOL, well those "cabins" on the show were purely fictional. She really did have tiny staterooms, especially by today's standards but she was a beautiful ship, nonetheless. Thanks for posting. :)

Thank You for documenting passenger/cruise ships for posterity. The 3 ships my own 5 cruises were on, have all been scrapped for quite a while now. My awareness of that is largely due to your KZfaq channel. I was on the Canberra's solar eclipse cruise (NYC-Tenerife-eclipse-Dakar-NYC) in 1973 as a 15yo traveling alone, sharing a porthole cabin with 3 strangers. On rough days, crew would bolt the porthole shut, and indeed we'd get some underwater views of the middle of the Atlantic. Other than seeing the longest remaining total solar eclipse happening in my lifetime, the highlight was playing ping pong with another kid, the only two people in the ping pong room, when his father came in and watched us finish a game before telling him that his mom wanted him in the cabin in 35 minutes. Neil Armstrong. The son was one of the best-matched ping pong players on the ship for me. I beat most other kids, but he beat me probably 75-80% of the time. Between the ping pong encounter, and my probably being the only person on the ship who didn't ever bother him for a photo, autograph, or moon story, Neil came over and spoke to me anytime he saw me for the rest of the cruise. Sometimes likely to escape the small swarms of people who would invariably gather around him. There was not an ounce of conceit in this man who could have won a game of one-upmanship with anyone, or looked down on or ignored anyone, had he chosen to. Just a nice, normal guy who had done extraordinary things. It made me even more a student of the Apollo missions than I already was. The surprising result is that Neil was not only super competent, but even brighter and more hard-working than you'd assume. Though the most famous and most appreciated astronaut, it turns out he is still the most underrated, in my opinion. My honeymoon cruise NYC-Bermuda-NYC in 1979 was on the Volendam (orig Brasil) during a tugboat strike in NYC which prevented refueling there. Every 3 weeks (including our week) it had to stop in Chesapeake Bay for a day of refueling. Sunbathing to the smell of oil being pumped aboard, and less time in Bermuda, was less than ideal, but it was one more unique memory. From 1996 to perhaps 2000ish, my parents took about 10-12 of us on three 5-day cruises on the Regal Empress (orig Olympia) . Very pleasant and memorable pre-9/11 cruises from NYC, on a grand old ship, albeit beyond her prime. Ports the various times included Bermuda, Newport, Martha's Vineyard, Provincetown, Boston, Portland, Bar Harbor, Saint John, and Halifax. Interestingly, the modern era of solar eclipse cruises began on her in 1972 as the Olympia. There was also a (nudist!) eclipse cruise on her in 1998, and I saw her in port in Aruba soon after the eclipse, during my own ground-based eclipse trip.

Thank you Peter for this interesting walk through of the Island Princess, as well as those brief glimpses of some of her Island Venture interiors. I have to confess that it took decades for me to warm to her or her sister. I had seen them in various places but had never felt any interest in sailing on either of them. Probably the fact that I was less than enchanted by Princess Cruises had a lot to do with that. Then suddenly, in the final years of their lives, I 'got it'.... something about them seemed to just 'click' in my mind. I sailed on Island Princess when she was Discovery, during her final season sailing in the Far East. After all of that time I was suddenly charmed by her and appreciated her quite sophisticated design features. That dreadful casino had gone when I sailed on her, what an eyesore they are. Also, how lovely she looked internally as built, the forward-facing Antilles Lounge looked as though it was a delightful space, whereas the show lounge that replaced it was simply boring - as most show lounges are. What a pity that Flagship Cruises was an unsuccessful venture. After they had sold the twin ships to Princess Cruises they acquired that other Tilberg gem, Kungsholm but it was not long before she was bought by P&O and would for a short while even sail for Princess. Thanks again.

Thank you, Clive! Like you, it took me a long time to fall in love with her. She was here in my back yard as Island Princess, for two decades and I wrote her off as "plastic". Then, I, too fell for her as DISCOVERY and enjoyed three cruises in her. Was very sad to see her go and even followed her to the beach in Alang to rescue the artwork and some of her fittings. Wish I had the chance to sail in PACIFIC, which I also followed to the breakers but at least I did DISCOVERY.
@TheClive1949
@TheClive1949 3 жыл бұрын
@@midshipcinema Peter, Yes indeed, once one fell in love with Island or Pacific Princess one realised that 'plastic' was a long way from what those ships were. The Royal Viking Line trio entered service at the same time as these two and it took me a long time to fall in total love with those as well. But they were sold as luxury ships from day one and yet the over all design and construction of Island and Sea Venture far exceeded the RVL trio. Island and Sea were, however, designed for short cruises and therefore had modestly-sized cabins. Had they had larger cabins, and thus had been a little longer, these would have been true luxury ships.
