Floatwheel Pros/Cons on trail! I broke it at the end😬 (freak accident)

Took the Floatwheel to the Santa Cruz trails to see how it handles some tech. Impressive performance and power! I cover some of the ADV's pros/cons. Unfortunately I broke the board at the end by not having the mini fenders on there and jamming a rock into the cable harness. Sparks flew, cooked a rock, and smelled like burnt BBQ..
This was not an electrical malfunction of the Floatwheel itself. All that torque completely smashed that rock in there and shorted everything out! Had the mini fenders been on there it would've helped prevent this I imagine, but the first gen fenders were rubbing on the tire and sounded very annoying.
The next big best, let's see how the repair process is going to be! Tony has already helped diagnosed and sent out the parts. Right to repair in action.

Nice video! I am totally convinced for ADV, with current new plastic parts it will be even better. It took a beating. That rock was really just a bad coincidence. But the best part of Floatwheel is = you can buy any part of ADV and fix it by yourself if anything happens. Hopefully just a burned fuse/board in this case, not a battery damage.

ADV is overall my favorite trail board! And like you said love how you can buy parts a la carte and service yourself. After extensive diagnosing, we found out we pretty much need all new electronics, to be safe. Couple cells were affected in main pack, maybe some mosfets, and bms in question (even though no visible sign of damage). Tony already sent the replacement parts, let's see how this goes.

huge difference in powah😅once you dial in the balance it's soo good, all tire lands baby! I was super bummed when it happened but now realize it's gonna be a great way to share the rtr process with everyone

Shit that was some serious sends. The weight of the Floatwheel can make it feel like a freight train on the downhill making it pick up insane speed vs the GT which is something that scares me. Terrible luck about that rock and motor cable. What are the chances of that happening, damn.

thx dude. The weight definitely picks up speed on downhill drops! but luckily you can adjust the braking for vesc to be way stronger than fm programming, also with atr way less prone to tail dragging. Sucky circumstance, but it'll be great to share with y'all the repair process

My biggest thing is after all adjusting I still can’t get the boards nose to stop from dipping down while turning super sharp and in the trails that sucks bc I end up hitting a root or just dragging the nose in the dirt. Sucks! Like I can’t make no sharp turns without it dropping the nose way down

Oh damn... We might need 3d printed rail guards to protect them cables. Seen this happen on GTs as well.

The mini fenders with mudguards that come with the board would've prevented this I believe. Pretty tight fit shielding the cable harness. I only removed them cuz the v1s were rubbing on the tire. V2s have since resolved this 🤙🏻

haha why is that? this was a freak accident due to 1) nose sliding on tracks with tons of railroad ballast 2) removing the mini fenders with cable shield cuz the v1s were rubbing against the tire and causing annoying noise. With the new v2 mini fenders on the boards, you can keep em on to easily prevent rocks from jamming in the rails, and also just don't do #1 I have a feeling you're gonna love the board, enjoy that crazy torque!

Looks like my home trails. Ive seen this happen before ( the rock getting wedged ) on an xr , im assuming with more power it geys slammed in easier . Sad to see, but at least you dont have to deal with fm :)

yea with all those sharp ballast rocks at that similar size, increased the chances something gets wedged in exponentially. Lesson learned, don't do nose slides on railroad tracks with those rocks around 🤪

first time happening in over 4 years of riding trails so not a huge concern lol just don't nose slide around railroad ballast!

I did that on my GT before, you have to turn off the board immediately so it doesn’t push more current through the motor, it could burn your mosfet or motor wires.

What was the diagnosis? Did the rock pinch the battery cable or the motor cable? I'm guessing it just shorted something out?

Why do people keep mentioning the V1 plastics. It's been talked about already, and Tony handled it in an amazing way. It's a non-issue at this point because anyone buying a board from now on will get the new plastics. So why keep beating a dead horse?

Most people haven't gotten their new plastics yet though. There's like a 1000 bumpers out shipped right now that we are all waiting to arrive.

2 reasons: 1) this was filmed a few weeks back so the v1 plastics issue was still relevant, 2) I truly couldn't find any other cons🤗

Fortunately, ESC or BMS is easily replaceable. Both are connected to their own plates that are easily detachable. The battery cable shouldn't be difficult to swap out either. I've taken mine apart and put it back together so many times that I've gained an appreciation of how easy Tony made it to replace parts in this thing.

I wonder if the mudguard that seems to have been taken off would have saved that cable from the rock?

the mudguard substantially covers the harness connector area on the bottom, so I believe it would've helped prevent the rock from being shoved in completely. If it wasn't for the v1 fenders rubbing on the tire, I would've left them on and I don't think this would've happened. Bad luck on 2 fronts lol

@@MaxxSend oof. I'm using the 3d printed ones designed by hyperforma. When you get the board back up, you should get it printed. No rubbing, extra protection.

Normally, your electronics and battery should be fine, the rock probably damaged the wires and they shorted. You need a new harness. If not possible then ... that's gonna be sketchy. Identify the damaged wires, cut them out, solder new ones, but that means also cutting the external sheath of the harness ...

pretty much new electronics at this point to be safe. A few cells from the main pack were affected, and possibly some mosfets and bms too. The harness is the most basic thing to replace haha

I realized almost at the end of the ride my psi was at 20😆 extra bonk air which I love, but very bouncy on everything else too

We knew the Adv and its creator was desperate for our attention 🤣🤣 Wow. Sometimes just because something is cheaper and maybe better on paper doesn’t mean it’s the better buy…

what you mean desperate, the performance speaks for itself lol this is absolutely the best value one-wheeled device, as long as you're open to spending some time to assemble and set up the firmware. If not, go spend your hard earned $3200 on the other board😉🤑

@@dezh2544trash like how many gts brick once u do the haptic buzz update, then gotta spend $500-800 to fix it?🤣 This was a weird accident that could've happened to any board. 'No originality'😆 All the electronics are designed from bottom up, look at the footpad connector, cannoncore motor, and split battery pack design, completely different and better than fm design. Vesc is open source software. Don't be so salty n closeminded that competition is here✌🏻

A design flaw? 🤣 You're right! There should be a 6' diameter mesh 'hamster ball' of sorts around the board and rider to keep the rocks out! Maybe add airbags and a wine refrigerator too.

Ive also seen this on an xr, and there too it was a freak accident. Your tire wedged the rock against the tire and rr track, with the wheel in free spin it had more than enough force to wedge. Fingers crossed they had a fuse in circuit otherwise you likely need a new foccer.

Even though this could've happened with any board without a harness shield, I can empathize with your point because the only reason I removed the mini fenders with mudguards was because they were rubbing on the tire and causing a very annoying sound. This was an issue acknowledged by Tony as a significant amount of gen 1 fenders had tire rubbing. Since then the new plastics have resolved this issue with better fit and strength.
