Anybody watching this, please do not sand before clear coat. Depending on the type of paint you are using it will wrinkle if it’s an enamel you CAN NOT sand a respray. Get the shape and imperfections out before you spray your base coat. After you spray base coat wait 30 minutes then clear. You’re welcome.

question sir, is it a bad or good idea to apply clear coat on top of the decal, to somewhat protect the decals color? thank you

I personally don’t recommend it. If you get real outboard stickers they are made to be in the sun just as much as the paint is. I’m doing mine right now

I will be ecstatic if I can get the results you did. I will be taking this project on later in the year. Right now I'm to wrapped up in learning how to repair gelcoat 😂. Already enrolled in the school of You tube for DYI boat engine repair and restoration 😅. I actually enjoy working on my boat so it doesn't bother me to learn and apply my new skills. When you finally get it right there's no better feeling. I can't thank guys like you enough for sharing your skills and teaching others like myself who really want to learn. I can't have a boat if I can't do the work. I'm an average person making an average wage trying to do a rich mans hobby 😂. You know what though I'm pulling it off. If you take your time and learn what to look for before you buy a boat you can find one that isn't ridiculously expensive and just needs some love. You have to want it! You have to love learning and doing your own work. If you do it's not break out another thousand it's break out a couple hundred and get ready to put in time and some elbow grease. Be ready to make mistakes and do it again sometimes to. My boat has come a long way and it's really starting to look awesome. I love knowing she's mine and I brought her back to beautiful with my own two hands and few ulcers😅.

I figured out the problem. Even though I wiped the pieces with a dry towel and tack cloth after I wiped them with a damp cloth, I think there was still some residual moisture on them. I sanded them down and this time set them aside for a while to dry. The clear coat went on without any issues. The clear coat seems to be much more sensitive to moisture on the surfaces than the prime and color coats. Fortunately this issue happened on a couple small pieces which I did first just in case there was a problem. Thanks for your video and help. I refinished twin 250 Verados and they came out great.

Great video, very informative and easy to follow. I do have a question though, after wet sanding down my last base coat with fine wool (I am using the same phantom black paint and 0000 fine wool as you) I can see very fine scratches from the sanding when the cowling has dried. When the cowling is wet, the scratches are barely visible and negligible. Did you have the same thing happen? If not, do you think I should reapply another base, and just apply the clear while it's still tacky?

Great video abd very helpful. I'm currently prepping a bay kit to paint for a Yamaha and was wondering how long you wait before applying the clear coat? Do you let the colored paint fully dry first or apply it when colored paint is still wet?

Two coats of primier. Two coats paint. Two coats clear.
@ernestleal6890
@ernestleal6890 3 ай бұрын
Skip the acetone and use water and let it air dry USE THE TACK CLOTH BEFORE PRIMING and every time you sand..sand with 800 or 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper, NOT the steel wool. MOST IMPORTANTLY....SPRAY IN AN AREA WITH GOOD LIGHTING...if you spray like he did in low lighting, it will turn out like crap like his did and not a smooth glass finish...good lighting will show your imperfections that need to be addressed and not spend all that money to say "I'm ok with it" or just to cover it up with a decal. A high quality gloss should look like a high quality finish, not like a gloss that looks like he used a 97 cent can of spray!

Pretty sure you should apply the clear while the 2nd coat of colour coat is still slightly tacky.
@FloBass

With cheap clear, yes that is correct. But not with high quality clear that has a hardener, such as what I used in this video.

The Mercury Paint instructions says dry to the touch in 20 minutes. They say to apply the second coat either before one hour or after 24 hours (full cure time). How long did you wait to wet sand after you applied each coat?
@FloBass
@FloBass Жыл бұрын
I wet sanded roughly an hour after each coat. They say to apply the second coat before an hour as if you're not wet sanding. The paint is dry to the touch, but not cured so both coats will bond. When you wet sand and create those micro abrasions and more surface area, it doesn't matter how long you wait, as long as the paint isn't wet. This is the process I took. Many ways to go about it and get great results like I did.

Would you suggest maybe 000 steel wool between clear coats?
@JayDanielz

Nooooo….no steel wool at all. It can leave residue embedded in the paint/clear. Residue that’ll show up bigger each coat of clear.

@flowbass Hi. i've found this video a little late. Quick question. I have an old Honda Outboard and when I was sanding it I noticed I did take it down to the fibergass in some areas. What's your best reccomendation to restore that part?
@FloBass
@FloBass Жыл бұрын
As long as its smooth, you should be able to cover it with primer and it will be fine. You may want to add two extra layers just for additional protection. If its not smooth, you'll need to use body filler first, sand it down smooth, then primer.
@edwardsmith1259

HELP! I let the second color coat dry overnight then wet sanded with very fine steel wool. I wiped off the pieces and wiped them with a tack cloth. I applied the clear coat. When I went back in an hour to check on them, the clear coat had shriveled up and cracked in places. Any suggestions?
@FloBass
@FloBass Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear that, Ed. Very difficult to diagnose over the internet. My best guestimate is you sprayed the clear coat on too thick, or possibly the clear wasn't mixed well enough. If you used the clear in my video it has a hardener you have to release and mix for a solid two minutes before spraying. It also might be too humid when you sprayed it. Just guessing.

Use 400 wet sand after primer after black paint use 800 then respray.. reason for orange peel is to heavy on paint try lighter coats and you should tag cloth before every coat 😊

People, only watch this if you want to know what NOT to do. You're sprays should overlap. even from the initial primer coat he is leaving massive gaps & has to go back over it to get proper coverage. And then Uses acetone (paint remover) to clean after each coat. His final finish is the ultimate example of a rubbish job, The entire cowl was "orange peeled" when he put the cowl on the motor just before he put the decals on. It should have been polish smooth before he ever put the clear coat on. Watch any other video but this one!
