@stumbras2000 Lost 1 matchup because of a bad decision and reset. They won the event for the weekend though... Btw, notice how Cole, Bodoni & Dante all won by submission. All from playing guard. P.S. Not a single submission on any Modolfo member was performed. "Submission Grappling"?

These wrestling exchanges with the dagestanis are very entertaining. Unlike matches based in the US/Brazil where the "wrestling" is mostly spamming collar ties, with occasional half-hearted apprehensive shots, those dagestanis actually do shoot regularly and commit to their shots. They seem to have honed their defenses against the associated strangles. I wish this attitude can be imported over here. It will make those ADCC wrestling exchanges a lot more entertaining (or at least bearable). I am talking about the relatively boring standup of Pedro Marinho, Craig Jones, Felipe Pena, et al. Usually their standup is a snooze fest of spamming collar-ties until someone elects to sit guard.

When I lived and trained in Europe, I became very impressed with the level of skill overseas…. Many of them just aren’t able to come compete in the big USA events for one reason or another - usually because it costs a small fortune to cross the ocean - and no one ends up learning about how amazing they are. There’s soooo much talent in Europe and I’m glad we are starting to see them finally emerge on the world scene. Finland, Poland, Russia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Belgium, Norway, etc all have HIGH level jiujitsu, wrestling, judo, and Sambo

Craig Jones has said himself that the age of leg locks is passing. It’s just gonna be another tool now everyone is learning leg lock defense even people outside big leg lock countries like the United States. Being able to dominate from the top is gonna be bigger in the future I believe. Now that these heavy pressure wrestlers are learning how to defend the leg locks they can apply their game plan and smash people from top.

But he cheated in the resetting of the triangle so thats that. He should have been dq for not allowing to lokc the triangle on reset.

Looool he's a fucking cheater. Should have got DQ for fleeing the mat twice. Then resetting half way through a triangle escape. What an absolute shit call that decision was

Wooow, what an event 👌🏻!! I like Modolfo style way better, but Universal was effective as well. I didn't like when They restarted that triangle in the last fight, the judges didn't gave Andrey the same position They had AND the triangle was lost... Nonetheless, great fights!!

A few thoughts: 1. Congratulations to Universal Fighters on the win. 2. Though leg locks were a game changer in the last decade, perhaps a better use of them this decade is to threaten leg locks to get to top position rather than focusing solely on the control leading to usually a heel hook. 3. How UF grappled here reminds me of when wrestlers (mostly from the US) first started competing in grappling - hard hand fighting, disengaging out of attacks, mediocre half guard passing attempts (if you can even call them that), etc. Maybe next time we can see some actual submission grappling instead.

Expectation (and I had the same one, too) was a clean sweep. It didn't turn out this way despite their submission rate superiority. Worried very much about saving face.

@@anonymousreviewer169the fact that a bunch of unknown Eastern European wrestlers can almost win with pretty much just wrestling doesn’t make bjj in general look good

@pninnan Different BJJ styles favor different rule sets. Buttscooting style usually favors sub-only; wrestling/top heavy favors MMA. A healthy blend between the two is usually the best. This ruleset is not the best for buttscooters (unless they have an ultra high subrate, like Cole Abate). Team Modolfo (with the exception of Izaak, Fabricio, and Gabriel) was pretty much all buttscooters, so it almost didn't work out. Nonetheless, there was a very distinct and high advantage in sub rates to them. In MMA ruleset, however, I feel their BJJ offers very little against their competition here specifically.

Unknown eastern european wrestlers? The eastern european/russian/dagestani/georgian wrestlers are world class wrestlers. The ruleset favored the wrestlers as was said numerous times through out the event. Let them come to ADCC and see how it goes in a ruleset that favours Submission Grappling. All said this was a really fun event. peace.
