Flood-hit Australian residents call for more government help - BBC News

Floods in eastern Australia have killed at least 22 people and left thousands of homes uninhabitable in the past month.
In New South Wales town Lismore, where some residents scrambled to roofs and waited for 24 hours or more to be rescued, rebuilding will take years.
The crisis, one of Australia's worst natural disasters, has focused residents' anger on politicians over their responses.
Following the floods, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the nation was "getting hard to live in because of these disasters".

Holy cow. It took them NINE DAYS to declare a state of emergency? That's just ridiculous. That man does NOT understand their anger and frustration. The worst thing about such major flooding and devastation is that unfortunately, there is never enough help from the government, no matter where you live. I hope that there are enough neighbors helping neighbors for y'all to be able to rebuild your community. Down here in Southwest Louisiana, we know how it feels to be overlooked by your government in the face of natural disasters. Every year, we are either gutting our own homes or gutting our neighbor's homes. We're either using our boats to rescue ourselves or our neighbors nearby, which is why the "Cajun Navy" was formed (it's not really a navy, just a bunch of Cajuns with boats helping their neighbors. They organize and deploy quickly for every natural disaster from Houston, TX to Hammond, LA and beyond. I pray y'all get the funds you need to rebuild in the face of such a devastating flood.

Australia has been taking a beating from Mother Nature, & my heart & prayers go out to all affected. But Mother is well & truly angry with her human children, & we are now facing a global climate catastrophe. Right now, Madagascar & surrounding areas are reeling from multiple powerful cyclones. There's a dangerous heat wave in India. A few days ago, temps at both Poles reached relative "heat wave" status of their own. At the North Pole, temps were 50°F above normal for Mar., registering 76°F. At the South Pole, it was 70°F above avg., coming in at 6°F, which is still frigid, but it SHOULD be -63.7°F in Mar. The planet cycles to & fro between hot & cold naturally; but THIS time, homo sapiens sapiens has replaced a good deal of "natural" with "man-made". Our efforts to mitigate the damage will slow the change down, but many scientists believe it's already past the point of no return. The polar ice caps, & glaciers the world over, are melting more & more rapidly. Low-lying INHABITED oceanic islands all over the globe are being permanently inundated, forcing entire populations to become climate refugees. Governments & political entities MUST take concrete action NOW to address this crisis, because it's happening NOW. It's no longer a "sometime in the future" event - it is upon us. Our differences with each other must be put aside, for the survival of the human race. Mother Nature has NO qualms at all about sending our species the way of the dinosaurs. She's done it to BILLIONS of others.

The government were really poor. But, let's look at why lismore is being flooded so badly. IT'S ON A FLOOD PLAIN ! Scientifically building, buying or renting on a flood plain significantly increases the chances of being flooded. Take your own precautions. Live elsewhere, build a defence, live on a small hill or stilts or have a garage on the ground floor to minimise damage.
@lauradon2978
@lauradon2978 2 жыл бұрын
Its easy to say live someone else, but in more cases this is the only place that is affordable to these people (no one actively chooses to live in a flood plain). Many many people, are forced to live in areas that are flood prone, are in low lying areas or even in overland flow path. This coupled with the fact that the insurance companies won't even insure homes and contents, so when it does flood people lose everything. Its devastating. From a planning perspective you could blame the government for allowing these areas to be allowed to be zoned for buildings in the first place. However if you look at how much of the Australia is built on areas that are susceptive to flooding you would be shocked. And with the changing climate, and increased weather events areas that were not previously classed as 'flood zones' now will be when they flood.

In this case it's not worth the hassle to rebuild something to withstand such forces of nature. They need to relocate entirely. If they struggle to afford to live somewhere else, I imagine they will also have trouble paying for future flood insurance after this. If they can even get insured. The sunk cost fallacy of people staying in their homes because they're already invested and can't recoup their losses will just result in more deaths.

It seems the town is build on a floodplane. Periodic flooding has always been part of life on the Richmond River. There were three floods on the Richmond in 1861. Then, in 1863, Casino took the brunt of the flooding, with Lismore again being inundated in 1864. The 1870s and 1880s saw more flooding, especially in 1889. In 1893 there was a major disaster when the river peaked at 29'3" (8.92m), started to fall, and then rose rapidly again to 34'3" (10.44m). So blame it on climate change.

It's not up to the government to save people. It's up to all of us to educate ourselves about climate change and do EVERYTHING NEEDED to stop the damage. I've seen no changes in my area of life. People refuse to give up their addictions to what they are use to enjoying. In fact all of the climate change influencers were mocked and hated. Well guess what. They were right. Now we are ALL in big trouble and it will only get worse. There comes a for price to not paying attention.

Very true. Everyone's waiting for their governments to come up with the 'magic solution' to climate change - and yet do nothing at all to change their lifestyles and affect 'real' change. It's as if they want to live in the delusion that they're personally not doing anything to affect the climate themselves, and that it's someone else's fault. Truth is, the fault lies in every single one of us human beings (excluding those very few who live in very isolated jungle tribes and repel every form of modernity that comes their way). Governments can do nothing while their citizens continue to indulge their every silly whim: buying huge TVs, flying abroad for holidays, leaving electrical appliances and heating running needlessly, scoffing down way too much snack/take-away form meat, buying new cars (when the present one is still fine), building house extensions and so-called improvements (when there's nothing wrong with what they have already), or worse - continuing to extend their family with no thought as to what their added children are going to have to deal with in the future. We can all be more sensible about 'what' we buy and 'where' it comes from - and most of all, if we really need it.

Actually the reason people lost interst in the fires was cause it started raining, which put them out. Problem is it hasn't stopped raining yet & that was 2 years ago! This is the second flood of it's kind in hte last 12 months. The "summer" after the pray for bushfire rain we had something like 5 days without rain all summer! It's been raining non-stop ever since the entire world decided to pray for it to rain in Australia, so yeh, thanks for that! :P (& I love pointing this out to those still "praying for Australia". I mean either their prays are pointless, or they have to accept responsibility for their prayers right?
