If your property has access to flood irrigation, you know the benefits of deep watering for your landscape plants and trees. However, flooding your garden every 13 days may not be practical for watering raised beds and vegetable gardens. There is a way to water your garden using flood irrigation water that works well. This blog post explains how to install a flood irrigation system to effectively water your garden and raised beds.

It is amazing to see the difference in areas throughout the county with and without flood irrigation. Flood irrigation deep soaks the earth so larger trees can develop a deeper root base. The planners who initiated flood irrigation throughout the Valley had great foresight (not all areas receive it); however, it can be too much of a good thing all at once. Mr. Burnett took this to a whole new level -fantastic idea!!

What a great way to use flood irrigation water for other than……flood irrigation. Didn’t realize how inexpensive compared to treated water. Can’t wait for next field trip to Larry’s garden.

Way to go Larry! I remember the first day you brought up your vision to me at the school, so it’s so cool seeing this video now. Thank you Angela for doing this interview.

Love this idea! We will be building a home someday on a 2 acre irrigated lot. I had always wondered how to water the garden with that water but this answers all of my questions. Thank you for the helpful video!

I work for SRP. Many of the golf courses do something similar. Flood irrigation fills their ponds and they pump the ponds through their sprinklers.

Just recently bought our house in Glendale AZ with flood irrigation. This has been what we have been wanting to do but have had no luck finding many people or video content of connecting the flood irrigation to a water tank. So glad to come across this video! Explaining our plan to irrigation techs sounds crazy/confusing because I don’t think many people use flood irrigation in this way. Can you pass on the information of the company that helped you set up your water tank?

This is genius! California would never allow this. Flood irrigation is so much better than drip! Is there a written list for this process? Thank you so much for sharing this idea.

this is similar to my setup only I don't have flood irrigation so what I did was install a commercial RO system and have that fill a 300 gallon tank which then gets tied into my garden irrigation system with a 1 hp pump for pressure. City of Mesa water typically runs 0.5-1 ppm chlorine and TDS of 700. My TDS is around 30-40 and 0 chlorine.

I can’t wait to build something like this down the road. Any tips on being able to switch back to city water if you run out?
@GrowingInTheGarden
@GrowingInTheGarden 4 ай бұрын
You build that into the system. There is a valve that can switch between the two.

For the cost of the tank you may want to investigate drilling a well.

We have heavy seasonal rains here in S Ontario, with a flood abatement system using pumping stations and draining through the creek in my subdivision. The area can also have lengthy droughts. It seems ingenious; gather the water you need later from the swelling waterway that's constantly monitored for flooding. I'd love to suggest this to the municipality; who could they contact for more information?

Yep but like you stated, not many people have access to this. I live in one of the hottest places, and it's city water or no water.

You have the rain as well. For every 1,000 sq ft of surface area(roof) in a 1” rain event it will accumulate 632 gallons of water. You also have grey water as a source as well, which is still city water but you get the point.

I have a 2500 gallon tank that I feed my flood water into just like Larry. The only difference is I use gravity to feed it out. It comes really really really slow. I would like to get a pump like Larry is using for the outflow. Angela, can you get me in touch with Larry?

Would have been lovely to be pointed in the direction of which dept. to contact. Is it Dept. of Agriculture? BLM? City Water Works? WHO do we reach out to to find out if our state offers flood irrigation to its citizenry?

Good question. Your local water utility would be a good place to start.

Flood irrigation is usually grandfathered into the property. Most municipalities are getting rid of flood irrigation and not adding properties this the canals. So you’ll need to buy a house that already has it. For your existing house the best opportunities come from rain catchment.
