Journey to the Chateau

Journey to the Chateau

Жыл бұрын

In this week's episode, Patrick and Stuart deal with flooding in the courtyard of the chateau farm. They also have a visit to a local emmaüs to do some shopping, and show a recent visit by some other KZfaq vloggers to have lunch at the Château de Colombe before Patrick's parents returned to Germany.
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château or castle in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

The ceramique wall mounted box is for holding twisted paper tapers for lighting fires and candles. The design and decoration is emblematic of antique designs from the pottery workshops of Rouen and are based on tin-glazed Majolica. The heraldic device is the provincial coat of arms of Upper and Lower Normandie. In fact, the same design as my avatar, used in honour of my home. We have several of these in our château in Calvados, where they are hung next to our fireplaces. The coat of arms is known in Normandie as "les p'tits chats" - 'the litte cats' and is attributed to William the Conqueror, Richard I and the 12th cent. arms of Anjou. You'll see the design presented as gules, two lions (actually leopards) passant on all heraldic devices in Normandy. The best way to eliminate blackberries is to eat them. Once the bush has stopped producing, cut it back, dig up to relocate the canes elsewhere in your grounds. Blackberries are a resource. I appreciate how fond you are of making jams, preserves and chutneys, but you can also make fortified wines, cordials and tissanes, or use the berries in desserts to flavour ice cream, cheesecake, cake, muffins and cookies. Best wishes from Caen. X

That's my advice. cultivate them. I grew up in washington state, and blackberries grow everywhere, wherever anything stops moving for a period of time. My grandfather got tired of fighting with them and trellised them. If you cut them back and train them, it reduces the blood sacrifice needed each year to harvest.@@patrickjourneytothechateau9452

TO the back is a pull out door to hold pipes And smoking related paraphernalia? That is lined with felt , but the felt was worn out , so I refined it with New felt. I keep tea boxes where cigars used to be kept and tea strainers etc , special spoons in back drawer. Unique pieces can be used in unique ways to suit our fancy. Any piece of furniture With drawers , intrigues me .

My Oma had a little thing like that by her stove and she used to keep salt in it. Whether or not that was the original use for it I could not tell, and I can not ask as sadly she passed when I was 17 which is a long time ago now. I still miss her. Your water problem is so familiar. Every rainy season our dam, which is about 10 meters in front of our house doubles, sometimes trebles in size, overflowing into the surrounding paddocks. We literally need a little boat to float out of here sometimes!! However, over the past 5 years, my husband has begun a program of "works" as I call it, (on a very tight budget, as we are on a limited income) with his shovel and wheelbarrow and he has dug trenches all over the place. Keeps him busy at least. This year with all the rain, is the first time, that within two days, all the water had receded from where it had overflowed and while the ground was soggy, it was not two feet underwater. The trench system was declared an official success!!! And he too had issues with the dreaded blackberry. It seemed entrenched all over our property and Anthony has gradually rooted it all out. Which is a shame, as I rather like blackberries. Enjoy your week guys!

Hi Gents, the little pot that goes on the wall could be for salt?? or for modern day it could hold business cards. The animal on the plate is a dragon, I think. A great way to get plates, cups, etc clean is to soak them in clothes washing powder for an hour (i.e persil/aerial), but you may want the lived in look. Love the mahogany table. The oak table could have a 'secret' drawer, to call it a nicer name. Ive mentioned this on other channels, but a natural way to get scratches out of furniture is to use the nut of a walnut, just keep rubbing it over the scratch and it disappears. Easy and natural and works on any colour of wood. I used one on an inlaid piece and it took the scratch out across all the different colours of wood. It really is worth a try

Hello. I hope you both are well. Watching you dig your trench reminded me of long ago when I was a farm hand. They used a method of watering crops called flood irrigating. When a field needed watering you would place a long pole with a large plastic tarpaulin, (a dam), covering it into the creek diverting the water into another smaller ditch. At the other end of the field you would place another dam in that ditch making sure the water could over the edge a little,, back into the creek.Then you would go up and down the ditch digging little trenches in the edge of the ditch so it would start flooding the area. It was very hot, wet,hard work and at the end of the day you knew you had done a good,honest day's work. I was 17 at the time and full of energy. That was 40 years ago. I sure could not do that now. I just thought I would share a little story with you. I have loved every minute of watching your vlogs. They are always entertaining. Take care, both of you.

A quick note, although I'm sure you know this anyway....antique/valuable/fragile plates should never have wire hangers put on them as they put stress on the plates and can often cause chips and cracks. There are adhesive disc hangers which are much better and can be used but these can sometimes become completely stuck to the back of the plate. So, only hang plates that you dont mind (too much) if they get damaged in this way. Thank you for such interesting vlogs!

Love the cake plate or you could serve cheese on it as it is nice and flat. The handle will clean up nicely. But the poor Grandfather clocks, they are so beautiful, no one wants them anymore and they are like little graveyards of clocks. The pendulum on the one you showed was so lovely.

The mystery item looks like something you'd hang by the stove and put matches in it. But those usually have a fixed, open "drawer" reservoir at the bottom for the matches to fall into from the top as you use them. But yours doesn't have that open reservoir at the bottom. Very similar looking though.

What is a spill holder??
@ronmchugh7959
@ronmchugh7959 Жыл бұрын
@@rosita3671 A spill is a long twisted paper to use to light candles, pipes etc. These would be put into the holders near a fireplace by the housemaid or other members of the household, the more decorative holders being in the main reception, sitting and dining rooms.

Hello my dear Connie. Weeks of rain are so depressing. We had 10 cm of snow ❄️ last night and wonderful sun today. I hope you will get some better weather soon. ☀️ And wasn’t it fun to jump and splash in water as kids! I loved it. I hope viewers will like the shorter videos of us just doing projects. Much love as always from us in Colombe. 😘💕🥰.
