TODAY’S SUBJECT is a survey of the flooding around Nuneaton and checking that the Flood Relief System is working.

I am retired from two careers of primary school teaching when I was deputy head of a Middle School and Primary School, and as a self employed Chalkboard Artist from 2002 until I reached the grand old age of 65 in 2016. Since I retired it’s like a second childhood but with more expensive toys.

I play guitar and write songs and have written about 14 songs for the local BBC radio station. I run a weekly (weakly) evening Acoustic session at a local pub and have been doing so for 14 years now. I also started an afternoon acoustic session in a quite large cafe in Nuneaton. Both premises were former songwriting clients of mine.

Tall Tripod is a Velbon CX 540
Mono pod is a Manfrotto Compact MMC3-02 and is very useful for getting high angles that look like low flight drone shots and so easy to carry on my bike along with the mini tripod.

A good section of the flat-top wooden bridge over the Anker just a bit further upstream at Attleborough Fields has been ripped off by the water John. I drove over the Trent on the M1 today and that seemed nearly a mile wide. The water here will be joining that in a day or two's time.

I know some online sources say the flood relief was done in 1976 but actually it was finished in 1978. I've got some local newspaper archive material that demonstrates this, with various stories about its construction starting in late April 1977 and carrying on into 1978. Not sure exactly which month in 1978 it became active, but by late December 1978 there are stories about it preventing flooding that month.

Now that I live in Wales I can see the effects of plentiful rain and what happens to it when it comes down from all of the many hills and mountains on my delivery rounds. Yesterday was awful and I'd never seen so much water on the roads over such a large area!

Good evening John from a very waterlogged Wales. Very interesting vlog showing, once again, that my former home in Cleaver Gardens gets hammered again. I imagine the new resident in my old flat is shocked! No flood relief for them. Brilliant drone work as per John. May I wish you and your wife a very Happy and Healthy New year 🎉🙏

Great video John. Just for info your title says 2023 rather than this year. I lived in Cleaver Gardens 2004 - 2012 and saw bad flooding occasionally but never on this scale. So many area of uk have experienced their worst flooding ever, which must make us all wary and ask why?
