Refit and Sail

Жыл бұрын

With the osmosis treatment underway on the external hull of this Contessa 32 it was time to start an internal project.
It is fairly common to replace the originally fitted GRP water tank with a new one as the originals tend to suffer from osmotic blistering after many years of holding fresh water which makes the water unpleased to drink.
In this video I carefully remove some of the internal furniture so that it can be refitted them remove the cabin sole and water tank. There’s is a lot of cleanup needed to get back to the bare hull. I also talk about and show some of the modifications that will improve the structure and strength of the boat once she is back together.
Many thanks to the owner for giving me permission to create this content based on the refit of his boat.

About Me
I run a small business called The Solent Boat Butler and spend my days repairing, maintaining and refitting sailing boats (often contessa 32’s due to my long experience with them). I'm mostly in the central Solent area of the UK. Being a cruising and racing sailor with many thousands of inshore and offshore sea miles logged I like to think that I bring a great deal of real world experience to my work and help many new (and not so new) boat owners to improve and maintain their boats. When I'm not fixing boats I also provide some own-boat sail training, help owners with deliveries and provide consultancy services to those that are refitting their own boats for cruising or racing.

I hope that viewers both enjoy and learn something from my videos but please remember to take the appropriate precautions for any DIY refit works you undertake with appropriate PPE and the correct tools for the job. If you are in any way unsure as to how to go about a project or are unsure if something on your boat is safe please consult a professional.

Fantastic video George! She seems to be of the same age as Murphy. Funny to see how those floor bearers should have been in place.

I've been watching backwards, and what a difference you've made since the boat was in this state! That's crazy that they drilled two holes in the hull to fit a table, never knew that about Contessas. I'm assuming they changed that somewhere along production?

New boats have a different table and a different method of attachment, to be fair to the builders it’s proven to be a strong, secure and generally problem free method - just a little unorthodox. Thanks for watching, I hope to get back to project Lottie very very soon, just been clearing the backlog of winter works that were booked in before Lottie arrived.

Hi, I came across your excellent videos and my interest was sparked by the fact that you are working on a Contessa 32, I have experienced sailing a Contessa 32 named Thunderer which was the property of the joint services sailing club at Gosport. Have you ever come across this boat?
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment, I recognise the name as one of the Joint Services boats but when they were all sold of some of them were renamed and I have not seen it recently, I expect she is still going, most of them are. Many co32’s have been or are being restored and rebuilt due to their continued popularity as a plastic-classic yacht.

Thanks a lot for making this, George. My tank is absolutely disgusting at the moment. There was even some diesel that managed to seep into it somehow. I am dreading this project a bit less now and I have a good idea of what I need to do. Look forward to seeing the new tank go in and to seeing how you plan to replace those strengthening beams that got cut out.

No problem, pleased you found it interesting, it’s not a small job so do factor in plenty of time for it and ensuring enough strength is put back into the boat with the new tank (bonding over the top of the tank) is essential.

I have an old UK built GRP Twister 28 I have purchased here in NZ, that also has an integral internal bilge water storage tank. I want to rip that disgusting tank out.... would a multi tool do the job (which I think you use in this vid) rather than a grinder? I won't be replacing the tank either, so I guess I'd have to glass in some floors to tie the bilge together? At 12:54 in my vid you can see the integral tank:. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pt92qZuE3cranWw.html Cheers for any tips. Love your channel!

Hard to give advice on the structure without seeing the boat but I use my oscillating tool a lot in this video for cutting the old GRP tabbing and its very good for that (accurate and easy to collect the dust). best of luck with the repair.

@@RefitandSail Far out, you replied already. Thanks very much. I added a vid link of my boat to my original comment. At 12:54 you can see the tank. Cheers!

It may be that the top of the tank is used to tie the two sides of the hull above the keel together (like the contessa) so if you remove the tank something will be needed there to retain that structure or you could end up with a slightly floppy boat. When beating, hard on the wind and heeling there is a lot of weight in the keel being lifted to windward, all that load is going to the area where the water tank is so you don’t want any flex.

Hi George. Nice work on a messy job. The channel is very interesting and I hope it grows for you . I’m doing a Hunter Impala at the moment. I’m half way through replacing a section of the primary bulkhead where the chainplates connect into . I’ve left the forward tabs for now and plan to epoxy the new ply to them. I see you’ve ripped out all the old tabbing . Is that the approach you’d take in my situation ? Start from a fresh surface and build it up. My argument would be the old tabs are still strong .
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Thanks, you can probably do it either way, the old tabbing will help locate the new bulkhead in the correct position but you have to adhere the two. Generally I would put all new tabbing in so you are not relying on another persons work. I guess it depends how confident you are in the old and if its a high load area.

13:26 - 28...what are those two holes in the hull? what is mounted there? Can´t be the through-holes to mount the giant sacraficial anodes...but what is it?
@RefitandSail
@RefitandSail Жыл бұрын
Two small holes in port side are two of the 4 fixing holes for the table leg support. two go though the hull (yes really!) and two though the floor.
